There are currently over 1,400 molds approved by the PDGA which means there are a few options to consider when trying to build your bag. The tricky part is...not all of these discs are meant for beginners. Having the right disc in your hand can be the difference between you falling in love with the sport or quitting out of frustration early on.
Today I want to comb through some of the most popular manufacturers and give you a host of options to consider for discs that can work for beginners. Not only do I believe these discs are best for beginners, but I stand by their effectiveness as I have recommended each disc on this list to a player at one point in time. We've learned from the last time we did a video like this, and I'm hopeful that we've put together a solid list people can look to for years to come! What discs would I recommend? You'll have to watch to find out!!

It’s funny how there’s a good amount of discs that you mentioned that I currently bag! I’ve been playing for about 2 years and and currently bagging the buzzz, paradox, essence, signal and hatchet. And at one point was bagging the underworld, avenger SS and the diamond. They once flew straight for me and now are my go too hyzer flip disc or roller discs. Love the vids!

The Fuse! Bought it as an understable mid range that I could get to go straight when I fist built a bag. As I've grown I've acquired other discs but the fuse is a staple that won't leave my bag. Tall panning hyzers, flip ups, slow to fast working turn overs, fore hand or back hand I love this disc.

Fuse is so crucial. Out of the box turnovers and easy anhyzers. I actually found that the swan felt just like the fuse except in putter form so between those 2 under stable is locked down!

If you're willing to spend the money to get one, JohnE McCray's 2020 tour series disc is the ultimate iteration of the fuse. The opto-x chameleon moonshine plastic is perfect. Same with the 2020 Kristin Tattar tour series pure, it's a putter fuse.

Anything with a -3 or -4 turn number. As an older player with a slower arm, I use a Pearl, Diamond, Paradox, and Underworld. All highly understable, but all go slightly to the right or dead straight. For people with more arm speed, those discs make for great hyzer-flip discs, or for touch anhyzers.

I've had three people impressed with the Diamond. I prefer Latitude 64's Opto plastic, but choose whatever you like. Another midrange I'd recommend is Latitude 64 Compass. It holds well with the wind. It keeps a straight reliable line and gives a nice light fade. The fade is a 1 and is consistent to help with your approach. Recently, I've bagged an MVP Volt and recommend it for when you need to approach and have a bigger fade or further distance.

I originally picked up an Innova Vroc to replace a starter set disc (when I knew nothing other than I needed to get a disc that said "mid-range" on it...) and I've loved it ever since. Very comfortable, beats in nicely, and can be used for all different kinds of shot shapes when you're ready to try them. Probably gonna get a new one soon to compliment my ~1 year old, beat in Vroc!

Thanks Robbie for all the great content. As a beginner disc golf player being introduced to the game via my grandkids, I have been through a lot of discs building my bag, many that you mentioned. I didn’t have success until I discovered the importance of lightweight and ultralight discs. I had a breakthrough in my game discovering “Dino” discs from Infinite Discs. Flipping them over and seeing ABC and Gateway as their manufacturer lead me to finding discs from 110 to 130 range with discs that can be understable to neutral to overstable. I’ve since started recommending Gateway starter pack lightweights of Spear, Element and Wizard. My peers and I are not hoping to get stronger with more arm speed in the next 5 years, but rather hoping to be physically able to walk the courses in 5 years. These lightweight discs are the best for senior beginners.

Latitude 64 Pure for throwing putter. It is shallower for the smaller hand players as well. Just stick to base plastics (their zero line) and it will be easier to throw at first. If you absolutely want premium plastic, I've found Gold Line to be less stable than Opto (and much easier to find currently).

I have to admit that I was very skeptical about buying a Pig. I avoided it for almost 2 years. I tried 3-4 other overstable putters. I finally decided to give the R-Pro Pig a chance. In 3 weeks, it has become my "Precious Child" 😁. I now use it for almost everything, except actually putting, from 250' and in to the basket. The R-Pro plastic is grippy thus making ground play very consistent, ONE skip, that is all...nothing else. The rim is very thick and fits my hands perfectly. The rounded outer edge makes it great for my favorite escape shot, the forehand roller.

I’ll definitely say for beginners, the trilogy line up has everything you’re looking for! I’ll also say, if the bounty doesn’t feel quite right in your hand, try the tursas! It’s a great compliment to the bounty that feels a bit different. And as you grow you could even bag both! I’d also say, if the paradox feels a little too big in your hands and want a smaller profile, try a Kon Tiki by infinite! This is my number one recommendation for beginners because you can find them in cheaper plastics and it’s just so comfortable in the hand! For a putter option I’d definitely suggest the Pure! It’s a great slightly understable option like the proxy with a different feel in hand :) Robbie, love the content! Keep it comin!

So for players that plays with an open bag(Not just one brand of discs) I myself have these discs in my bag. Putters: Latitude 64 Keystone Discmania p2 d-line(gotta switch this out barely throwing it because it feels to light for me nowadays) Midranges: Latitude 64 FUSE(Every player needs a FUSE in their bag, no joke doesnt matter if you throw it forehand or backhand it will hold the line) mine is in retro plastic(Cheap AF) its beat in now, so might get an opto one too. Kastaplast Göte k1 line (that disc is 4-5-0-1 so maybe a bit overstable, but it flies so straight) Drivers: Discmania Suncrow(Genius is the new name) Its really beat in now as this was my first disc Discmania forge Instinct special edition ( i was scared of throwing this after i bought it, because its an advanced disc..But its a good disc to throw for me in windy conditions, and if i go for a rhfh drive with a bit of anny release it gives a really nice S curve (if thrown high enough).Works great on a big open hole Latitude 64 River Gold Orbit(Test run) Straight flight and holds the line perfectly and massive glide :D Discraft Esp Raptor Paul Ullibarri Tour series 2022 ( i got it as a birthday present from a friend, i tried it on the course one day..And well it took a bad tree hit and bounced OB. Havent found it yet, sad times... Hopefully someone else finds it so i can get it back..) I thought ESP should be a grippier plastic but my River is much more grippier. But the throws i had with it, it flies kinda straight, got some good skips..( might not be the best beginners disc though.. I mostly play rhfh because my backhand just sux :/ So i can tell that i still feels like a beginner :) And on my homecourse (Par 57) i have got my best round at +27 (its rated A1 at Discgolfpark) (but the score gets better and better each contest i enter) So the simple answer to every beginner, practice, practice,practice.. You only need one disc FUSE in the beginning :)

Got a DX Valkyrie as my first driver and it taught me to throw wonderful s-curves really fast. It gave me enough frustration at first but rewarded me with 300' drivers after a couple of weeks. Now it's super beat it and a perfect roller disc that I can throw flat out of my hand and will turn over all the way. A Vroc for super straight flights from the start. A Kastaplast Falk, perfect Fairway Driver to grow into, slightly straighter than a Valkyrie and glides forever. A Innova Nova for putting and learning how to throw. It has a lot of glide and will not forgive bad releases. It really pushed me to get more spin into my throws, if you're ambitious, it's the perfect practice disc.

Started playing last year. I don't remember if my friends who were introducing me to the sport tried telling me about flight numbers and I didn't listen or just didn't give any suggestions because the first disc I bought was the Wraith. Guess what? I sucked hard with it. I also bought a Buzzz because they had the Chucky Halloween stamp and I'm a huge horror movie lover. I ended up not liking the feel of the plastic (now I know it's Supercolor plastic and I see a lot of people really like it but it feels cheap to me for some reason). I was given a beat up Warden for a putter, which is a good disc but I have found I like it more for a throwing putter than a putting putter, and recently have been going for a Star Aviar instead for that slot. Still experimenting, though, I'm still pretty new but learning a lot. Since the Wraith and Buzzz weren't working for me I ended up getting a bunch of Thought Space discs because they looked cool and I love the feel of the plastic. Of course, again, didn't know flight numbers and got the Omen for a fairway driver (it's a very overstable disc XD) and the Pathfinder, which ended up working great for me. I think I did get a couple other discs that year but that was my main set up. This year, I learned about flight numbers and the Thought Space Mana is an understable version of the Pathfinder. It opened so many doors for me, I still love that disc. I also tried out the Thought Space Mantra for a fairway, also understable, and it's like I unlocked something I didn't know before. It didn't make me great overnight, but it certainly made things make more sense. I also got the Thought Space Muse this year and it's been my putting putter ever since, even trying some other great ones this one just works for me. No, I don't only throw Thought Space but I do love their discs a lot haha. Right now, my favorite disc is actually the Latitude 64 Fuse. Fantastic mid range. Just picked up a Roc3 today and was throwing it laser straight, so that might end up a staple next to the Fuse. I found the Z plastic Buzzz is a lot more comfy for me. The Innova Rat is a staple in my bag, too. Perfect for forehand mid and approach shots, it's basically my go to disc when in a hard to get out of spot. Though recently I realized all my drivers are 9 to 11 speeds, except for an overstable 7 speed (the Votum) and am waiting for some slower speed discs in the mail, I'm hoping that will help me work on getting distance off the tee. Going from a 5 speed mid to a 9 speed driver I'm thinking now is quite a jump, really wish I knew about all this stuff before I started. So yeah, some of my recommendations for fellow beginners are: Fuse, Mana, Mantra (if feeling the need to have a 9 speed driver in your bag), Roc3, Muse, Aviar, Rat.

I've been playing disc for about 20 years and I've learned to set ego aside when choosing discs. After nearly quitting the sport after unsuccessfully throwing high speed discs with uncomfortably wide rims, I switched to "beginner" discs and am much happier with my play. I like understable discs and appreciate lower weights too. Can't have enough Star Mambas. Those things are my go to, but I look forward to trying a lot of these in the video, including, yes, a Pig (preferred plastic on that one?).

Should have made a list from your video because I got a sales guy, we started talking and....here's what I ended up with based on my understable preference. MVP Signal, Lat 64 Diamond, Axiom Virus, Westside Undertaker (I already know and live this disc) and a Lat 64 Sapphire. Also picked up first Deputy. Felt good in hand. Excited to get to field and throw! Pig is next round-i spaced.

It doesn't matter what other people throw, what matters is what works for you! I've been playing over 20 years and understand that although I've got years of playing time in the aging body can't do what it used to as well. So what, just means making some adjustments especially in driver weight and stability. My drivers are 150 class and understable. I don't throw anything over 9 speed. Distance is just one part of the game. Lowest score wins period😉

I got an Essence in my mystery box, maybe I should actually bag it. It's kind of redundant with my River in the straight fairway driver slot but will have to see if it takes it over.

Svea - Kastaplast (5/6/-1/0) Gote - Kastaplast (4/5/0/1) Both of these discs are perfect if someone has thrown an ultimate disc before. The feel and grip to an ultimate disc is similar. The SVEA is a straight flyer when thrown straight at low arm speed. as you grow into it and add power it will become your perfect disc to glide and fade right (RHBH) with a soft finish. But the glide. THE GLIDE is insane on this disc. it loves to stay in the air and then land softly. My max arm speed is 9 and putting power on this disc i can throw a hyzer flip that glides over 320ft and lands softly. I only threw the buzz mid range until I found this disc. GOTE is almost the same shape as the svea but it is a slightly slower and more stable verison. It has a little less glide so in those headwinds as a beginner and you have a shot where you want to throw the svea, you can throw this instead and it wont be affected as much while in the air and it wont burn out on you. Lastly, I will die on this hill. Kastaplast has the best plastic in the game. its durable but feels so so SO good in the hand

I think this is a great video. And, I didn't hate the first one you made. We're all learning and growing as a community. I did want to add that I think the Vandal is a great disc for beginners from Dynamic Discs. I also really think the EMAC Truth is a mid that should have been covered.

Westside Hatchet, along with the Innova Roadrunner as some of my beginner disc, as you have already detailed the Heat. Some other disc that I think get overlooked because they are in an actual starter kit is the Escape and Truth but in better plastics. I'm kinda surprised that the Leopard3 didn't make your list....hhuumm. Oh well, you did cover some great alternatives that consider some looking into and I thank you for that.❤❤ Maybe you can help me out with finding out about a disc I have that doesn't have a model stamp, all I know is that it is a 11,5,-3,1 made by innova. As a new disc golfer, you have helped. Keep them videos coming.

I think that if the Underworld is too understable for you I'd recommend the River. For beginners it is a somewhat overstable disc which gets straighter as you get better and more beat in. The glide is awesome and it is the first disc I hit 100 meters with.

My 5 first discs were a Macana from Latitude, a Reactor from MVP, a River from Latitude in retro burst plastic, a pretty beat in saint pro and a discmania fever. Still in love with the reactor and the saint pro. The fever was my first disc to make 250ft from stand still. I recently bought some beginner discs for a friend of mine, got him a Ruby a Pearl and a River from Latitude

By far my favorite is the Innova Dx TeeBird. It’s cheap, doesn’t weigh a whole lot, and after a few months of throwing it; flys super straight forehand and backhand. Super great disc for beginners

Someone who just wants one disc to do it all and try out the sport, i would recommend swan from westside. One of the easiest discs to throw and you can do everything with it. And it costs 9€. If that is too bulky then latitude pure. Same deal and same price

Great video again I have learned so much from your channel. My beginner bag is Roadrunner, Firebird, Insanity, Relay, Leopard, Wombat3, Buzz SS, Mako 3, Jack Rabbit, Luna, Bullet. Predominantly Forehand player. But of the above the hardest for me to throw is the Wombat3 forehand 80% of the time it cut rolls on me.

Weight of the disc can play a factor on how unstable or stable a disc flies. So if a heavier disc 170g plus disc which premium plastic discs usually come in is a little too stable for you you can try a disc at least 10 grams lighter than the disc you have. You can usually find a lighter weight version of your disc in a more basic plastic.

Great recs! The origin is probably the touchiest midrange I've ever tried. It seemed to turn too much when I didn't want it too and was always turning in a different part of its flight for me. Probably a great beginner disc but would much rather have the dependability of a buzzz!

I haven't tried a Mako3, but when I was starting I got a Wombat3 (more glide), and I think you won't find a straighter flying point-and-shoot disc. Truly 0 fade, it just sets itself down straight. Got 3 aces with it last year (not massive at distance, a basket under 200ft). I've started using it for anhyzers to go around an obstacle, and it's proven awesome for that too (as is my beat-in DX Leopard on that same basket).

Another thing to think about is the weight of the disc, the lighter it is the more under stable it will be. This can help you fine tune your disc choices, a disc that is slightly too stable for you can be corrected by buying lighter versions. This is why I started with Innova discs, as they have more models in lighter versions than any other company.

The Proxy is so great! Started bagging one a couple months ago and I can't imagine playing without one now, especially on wooded courses. Very workable, can throw long high hyzers, dead straight flip ups and slow turnovers and it flies as long as a lot of mids do for me. Definitely my favorite disc.

Good video...funny thing is that I bought an Innova Eagle a couple of months in...after I bought the Mako 3. The Eagle is a decent first headwind driver....and if you have to play in the wind. A Roc 3 is a great midrange as well..again for wind. I need to recommend some Latitude 64...they are my favorite company. For a beginner...I really like the Keystone as a putter. Great glide and you can throw on any line. Midrange I really like the Latitude 64 Fuse. Lots of glide and slightly understable. For a fairway driver a good grow into disc would be the River. Great glide and fairly straight.

the non disc golfer friends I have played with loved the roc when I have played with them. Other ones are the warship and valkyrie and last but not least. everyone I know starting out, loves the p2. a consistent stability is something they can really count on when their angle control or ability to read the wind isn't the best.

Heats were my favorite driver for a long time. Since getting somewhat better the Passion has taken over for similar lines. It's just a very long buzz for me. I still bag 2 heats though. 1 is super beat in for crazy woods needs, and the other is just a nice slow anny mover. For reference for my disc reccs, my form still is a work in progress, max distance 370, average accurate drive is 315. I have an almost full discraft bag (still can't get me away from star wraiths), but my most used discs are passions, buzzz, wraiths, Lunas, and my new favorite is the new C line MD3. Once that beats in it just might make the buzzzes jealous. For reference on a flat line it's 200ft an in Luna, 190-240 buzzz/md3, 230-300 passion, 270-330 wraith. There is of course some overlap depending on course, elevation, woods, and just how the arm is feeling each round.

The first thing I bought was the innova 5 disc starter pack and while the destroyer is 12 speed it actually went further than the other discs right from the start. There was a brief period as I improved my form where the teebird and leopard went almost as far, however, it was really cool as a new player to have a disc that could reach 250 feet from the start. I think a lot of new players could be well served by a good distance driver. The other disc that was really special for me was the wizard. It was a big improvement for me personally as a new player learning to putt.
@dalgrim
@dalgrim 2 жыл бұрын
In the Innova line everyone should have a Teebird. It's a 7 speed so you don't need a massive throw. It it stable but even beginners need a disc that will always finish stable. Under-stable is great for a lot of beginner but it'll lead to that shotgun spray aim. Where sometimes it'll turn, sometimes it wont. Having a couple stable discs will make sure that when they really need it to, that disc will go where they want it. Probably not a far as an under-stable one for total distance for beginners but more accuracy.

I’ve been playing just under a year now. My first discs were Innova’s Premium Starter Set (Valkyrie, Leopard3, and Aviar, all in GStar), and in the beginning the Leopard3 and Valkyrie flew fairly straight but ALWAYS finished left (RHBH). It wasn’t until my form and arm speed got better AND it got beat in that the Leopard3 started getting a little flippy. That was probably three or four months in for me. Until then it was impossible for me to understand why I’d want an overstable disc (I talked with my more experienced friends about it more than once), because I had NO problem making a disc go left!! Actually, that MIGHT not have been so true if I bought Innova’s regular starter set (Leopard, Shark, and Aviar, all in DX less than 150 grams) to begin with. I bought one of those sets a few weeks in, in case I had a n00b friend that might want to play with me, but I flipped the DX Leopard the first time I threw it. So MAYBE if someone is starting off with all light base plastic, but I personally don’t recommend people do that.
