How did Akita not make your list? While a little hard to train they are super versatile. Genetically bred for hunting and protection, stealthy and quiet, and won't stray far from your side.

all of those dogs eat a ton. With the exception of the dogo argentino, none of those dogs are used as hunting dogs (yes, totally aware that they may have hunting and catch work in their lineage but they aren't purpose-bred for that stuff today). If it is the apocalypse, you'll need dogs that have versatility actively bred into them. At the top of my list, I'd go with something like a Jagdterrier because they are purpose-bred to hunt just about everything while being small. There are no show lines, they are strictly used for hunting and have high prey drive. I'd also think about some form of sighthound/herding breed lurcher that people in the UK use for rabbit hunting. I'd consider something like a Treeing Feist which is bred to find small game in trees. If I was to choose breeds any bigger than those, it would be a Deutsch Drahthaar or any of the dogs that are bred under the German breeding system. I'm not choosing dogs based on historical reputation, I'm choosing dogs that still put food on the table to this day.

No mention of the Rottweiler, Doberman or the Malinois???!!!! These would be absolute top choices besides the GSD. They are the most trainable and adaptable of the Guardian breeds. Like others on the board, my honorable mention would be the Ridgeback.
@undercoverglock
@undercoverglock Ай бұрын
The Malinois would become insufferable after a while cuz it needs to be walked a crazy amount to burn energy and when your in a apocalypse when ur main goals are survive and salvage as fast as possible and quietly as you can so it would be be deprived of large amount physical activity it needs and you probably won't have enough food to feed it cuz that dog but s calories like crazy

I respect your list, but I think in a post apocalyptic world, you need to keep other things in mind. Kangals think for themselves and will want to explore too far of perimeters. This will more than likely get them killed by other people who, if starving, might even consider them a food source. Also, Cane Corsos are heavier set dogs that need a lot of food (along with the Kangal). You need a dog that is lighter, can hunt, and is quieter to not attract attention (other people become your enemies in these situations). A dog that stays closer to you is the absolute best bet. The American Doberman would be my number 1 choice if I'm living in an area that doesn't have cold weather just because you can train them to do anything including hunt, and they will stay at your side. Ridgebacks are also really good options. If I'm living somewhere with cold weather, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever would be a huge help since they handle cold weather and would be ideal for easier game like duck. Labs and German Short Haired Pointers also check a lot of boxes, but those 2 won't be as protective as the Dobey. The other 2 breeds that cover a lot of boxes are the Black Russian Terrier and the Giant Schnauzer. I feel like those are the best options. All dogs that generally fall in the 60-90 lb range. Anything over 110 lbs is going to be tough to feed if you're already low on supplies.

I agree, your list is much better and well thought. In post-apocalyptic world big, heavy dog wouldn't be practical. Also, I don't think shepherds are that good for hunting, so your idea of having Retriever is logical.
@VetteMAE2
@VetteMAE2 10 ай бұрын
@@lifee_._ why the French Mastiff? Great Temperament but really only useful for close quarter protection, not a lot of stamina, very difficult to transport and probably one of the least healthy of the Molosser breeds. The Boerboel might be a better candidate.

Awe bless WILL ATHERTON, it’s been a long time now, get yourself a corso again, same shit won’t happen twice, just get pup vet checked, and serious breeder info , you are the perfect dog trainer for a corso, you love the breed, it’s time for you to go for it , honestly I’m amazed you haven’t put all the past in the past by now, listen I had a chihuahua that I bred myself pass away of the same thing your corso pup did, my pup was given 2 months to live or operation to close the valve but operation only gave her a minute chance of survival, took her home and she lived for over 2 years. Will get yourself a corso xx

@@Kylethetile me too, but he needs a corso, they will work his training abilities to the max, they are a huge challenge, and it’ll be a good task for will, can understand how he feels though, I lost a dog with exactly the same heart problem, plus it was so hard for me cos I bred her myself, vet gave her 2 months to live or she could put her to sleep, I decided to take her home and give her the best 2 months of her short life,,, believe me that dog had the best ( NOT 2 MONTHS, BUT 2 YEARS ) of her life, don’t get me wrong I had to stand by my decision and watch her become weaker over the months and it ripped my heart out when she couldn’t play or run around with the rest of my pack, in her last few months she was carried everywhere with my pack, wherever they went, she went too, but carried in my arms. I’d already been advised by my vet what to expect at the end of her short life, and so for her full lifetime she slept next to me, I never left her by herself or with anyone else for the full 2 years because vets advice was that when she passed it could be sudden and without warning, I was also warned by the vet that when she did start the journey over the rainbow bridge that there would basically be nothing they could do, so I just had to hold her and comfort her, tbh I’m so glad in one way that I didn’t have her pts because I tried to give her the best possible life ever for 2 years she was by my side and I tried my best to give her a fantastic life, beeches, sand, forests, rivers everything we did together all just for her. but on the other hand her passing away in my arms and not a nice passing and knowing maybe I could have had her pts and she wouldn’t have had to go through her death the way she did, I now question was I right or wrong ?

If the crap hits the fan, a dog that eats large quantities of food yet does not hunt might be more of a liability than an asset. An Australian Cattle Dog is the preferred dog in the Australian Outback.
@DAJC21
@DAJC21 5 ай бұрын
An Australian cattle dog easily, they are tough as nails. There's a good reason why one stars in Mad Max. Is fine in extreme temperatures, smart, loyal and fearsome when need be. Only would need half as much food as those bigger breeds. Alot of big dogs are all for show and intimidation factor, not particularly intelligent, too slow and lack any stamina in a survival situation. A cattle dog is actually tough by what they're bred to do, take on and get the better of animals that are 20 times their size. Got no idea why they're not mentioned in guard dog videos either. I live in Australia and the last dog you'd want to encounter is a cattle dog. They are ferocious on farms especially. You're not going to out run, out last or out smart them in a confrontation.

I would choose the Dogo hands down! I think my priorities would be hunting, protection, guard, companion in that order. These dogs Excel in all those categories. They're extremely robust with few health problems. They require little grooming, their stamina is incredible. They're very intelligent and for a working dog pretty easy to train. They have the ability to work as a team and do so instinctually. As much as I love all dog breeds (especially APBT) I think the good doctor created a nearly perfect dog in the Dogo Argentino.

That kind of situation those bigger breeds are going to be hard to be able to feed because of how much they need to eat per day. That being said you may want to rethink and redo this video? How about a medium size breed that isn't such a resource devourer? Water may also be a concern as well, a full size dog can drink up to a gallon of water a day......

A realistic dog for the initial doomsday even would be a Jack Russel terrier. They are early warning dogs, great small game hunters and have loyalty. Plus their metabolism isnt through the roof so they wont burning off lots of calories when food is far between. Why would you want to have a dog that needs more food than you and isnt participating in obtaining food.

I dont think I've seen you cover the sharplaninatz. Honestly, that's hands down the best dog I've had. Very independent, but bonded to the family, fiercely protected the property and all animals and people.(had to grab her before ripping off some trespassers arms off, but she kept us safe). It's been hard to replace her since she was shot by trespassers (4:45 am i think they shot her after she wouldnt let them leave hours after coming through. When they were ready to leavethey just shot her). I can't find many breeders, and so far only males are remotely affordable. For us, females seem to be a better fit. I live in a forest with north American wolves, bears, and panthers. My sharplaninatz took the lead and we didn't have those predators around anymore. Now, my great Pyrenees/Anatolian shepherd won't do her job. The Korean jindo is about 14 and can't. The cattahoula/lab retrievers are being rehomed because of their sibling rivalry and prey drive (began attacking small animals within a week of me breaking my leg). They were raised with these animals so they are done here. I had a German shepherd, but she just never "blossomed" and one afternoon she vanished. She wasn't protective, which I thought was odd. She was only about 8 months or so, and I guess someone "took" her. I know it isn't just the breed that makes the dog, but I definitely feel partial to the ones I've loved. Australian shepherd Labrador mix was very protective and loyal. The st bernard/Pyrenees was the best babysitter and very careful with children and small animals. The sharplaninatz put herself between us and any threat and when she determined that wasn't stopping /devouring the threat she attacked. I watched her drag a Rottweiler uphill by its back leg. She drug it away from the proterty and came back. She had different approaches to different scenarios. Men with chainsaws, she didn't tolerate. The ups showing up at 10:30 pm reaching out with a package, she lunged. I could get her under control, but she was always looking out for us.

Realistically the best dog in a survival situation is the one that's going to provide you with the most amount of calories and consume as little as possible, the beat dog would be something along the lines of a bull lurcher or malinois lurcher, something big enough to procure a deer. A survival dog like a cane corso or even other bigger Shepherd breeds would consume too much and provide too little... anyone relying on a dog for protection during a survival situation (especially in the uk) is being naive, we don't have big predators... the biggest being human!

ok in the aplocalypse there will be no Air conditioning or electricity so people will move to more northern areas. not everyone can fit into a dream climate area like Central Italy. In colder area people will still have Wood to keep warm and but the southern areas will not be tolerable like they are now. in the USA, the southern areas weren't hugely unpopulated till the invention of the AC. Could a Corso handle Cold winters here in the USA. probably not. i would vote for something like the Akita, or maybe the Russian Wolf Hound extremely protective , loyal and fearless, and history of hunting big game. But also the question would be are you gonna be hunting your food or growing it.

Big dogs need big food with little return. I only need a early warning dog and a small game hunter like a Jack Russel Terrier. Heart of a lion and loyal. They won't require more food than my children and they can help obtain the realistic food source after a doomsday event where larger game is eaten very quickly.
