-- Season 3: Episode 33 --
Winter arrived and brought some serious surf with it! What seemed like would just be a good fun day of waves, turned into firing winter bombs. On top of that Sam Garrity came and cooked up lunch for all the boys, and we ended it with a fire on the beach. I mean... does a classic swell get more special than that?!

BARRELS, BONFIRES, and TACOS on the beach!! Does an epic day of waves get better?! NOTE: I personally made sure the fire was 100% out, and coal area was cold enough to walk on before leaving the beach. So no worries there for anyone wondering. Always leave the beach how you left it!

Had the surgery a couple years back, once healed you'll be stoked bro, its the best thing I did, only 28 at the time of surgery and grew up in cold waters of New Zealand, wearing plugs since has helped prevent further issues too. All the best man.

Awesome shots, day was firing, definitley looks like beatings were had on the inside 💣 I had ear surgery, wasn't too bad brett! Hurt my tailbone surfing our local slab doing exactly what you caution people against doing, went out at lower tide than usual on a big E swell it kept building and eventually dried out and my tailbone was almost shattered, haven't been able to surf as confidently since, but I'll be back! All the best buddy your content keeps me stoked for the log sessions I'll be recouping on throughout our summer 🇨🇦 🫡🤙

I was stoked to see you in the Oneil flyer that came in the mail. I hope we see some video from the PR trip. My sister used to live in Rincon, so I got to go on a "visitcation" there a few yrs ago. I didn't paddle out at Tres Palmas when it was 12 ft though. I only had a 6' 2" with me.

Man I truly am so happy for you I think I've been watching your stuff now for what seems about 2 years. I grew up going to the Outer Banks pretty much my entire live driving up from Charlotte. So it's really cool to really cool to watch your podcast and see some of the places I used to go to as a Young Man. But my went to this is to say. I'm so happy for you getting the O'Neill sponsorship. Watching the skeleton Bay trips. The destination shots that you just did when I think it was Surfer magazine. Getting paid to do what you love is a wonderful thing. RLTW 3/75

Thanks for your video's Brett, always have to review to get stoked to drive 8 hours to catch the hurricane swells. I agree with your assessment, but I also like to provide complete guidance NEVER paddle out into the middle of the group, many WILL drop in on you at some places. 1. take your time, study the paddle channels, watch others, paddle to the side of the lineup and work your way in or catch a few downstream to build confidence and gauge yourself. 2. Equipment: If your equipment is not right, stay clear of everyone. board too small means you are sinking and paddling is too slow, life threatening! I have 30CL for super small stuff, in big stuff I have 50+ and regularly have 40 (at 6'2 and 180). 3.If directly in front, paddle opposite the wave direction to end up behind the take off zone. Yes, there are always exceptions...but this is generally good practice. I use this approach EVERYWHERE I go as I have no beach home. Used to be El Porto, check out the videos to see that crowded S_Show. I also have picked up longer and longer boards as I got older to keep up and frankly most of the young'ns are out of shape couch potatoes. A 65 yo is taking waves away from you because you are using short boards on overhead waves...Get more flotation and keep in shape if you are really serious about having fun and catching waves.

haha you obviously didnt actually listen to what I said. thats not what I was saying at all... its a safety issue. Same reason I don't go surf Jaws is same reason someone who can't paddle shouldn't be out in 10-12ft surf with raging current in the winter time. It's all about knowing our limits...

@@brettbarley - I was reading "around" what you were saying, ya' idiot. It's a joke, just a joke. Brett, where's Kelly ??? Tell him, I don't just want to work with him on inventions. I want to be his coach too. I'm gonna teach him how to ditch the double pump bottom turn, and how to lay into a proper bottom turn ala curren - but he's gonna need to get a bigger board. He's always been used to the tiniest ones. Brett, I'm gonna give kelly his board advice now. I'd like to see him on a 6'4 - 6'6 Merrick/CI M4 model (from the 90s) on any day 2 feet to 10 feet. The M4 is just GOLD - there's a lot of boards out there, but this one just sits on the rail nicely because of good design on the bottom at the tail (slight convex at the middle). The only size M4 I can "vouch for" is the 6'4, but kelly was always tall and skinny, and I was short and fat..., so, has to make a difference. For me, at 5'9", the 6'4 M4 was/is magic. You just know when a board is magic. - oh, just realized I had a TYPO - fixed now, heh

Brett, I'm a lot like Turtle. I'm pretty slow to dig things out - they're in there SOMEWHERE. I know I've heard something about that before. But, like Turtle, I'm kind of a loner (by nature). Just don't like people buggin' me. So, anyways, that gives me the space to think, not to mention I've been out of work for 5 years for training (save 2 months). I did some thinking recently Brett. Brett, I've done some thinking. Did a lot of thinking. Surf industry has 3 days left - kelly or other... Want the 2 inventions, better get them now. It's not a threat, it's just what is. No, no - it has to be Kelly - I don't trust the others ...😂😂😂

I had surfers ear surgery. My surgeon strongly recommended against going to a chisel guy. If they screw up even slightly you can have permanent facial paralysis.
@brettbarley
@brettbarley Жыл бұрын
Well yes, that’s a risk whether chisel or drill. Except with the chisel they can be more precise so the risk is actually lower than with the drill, not the other way around like your doc claimed. The guy in California has done 1700 surgeries and not had one person lose facial feeing. Very strange your doc recommended against chiseling… it’s actually way safer and less invasive overall. The drill can cause high pitch hearing loss, it’s one of the most common issues of that surgery. It’s actually why Dr Hetzler came up with the chisel method years ago because of the issues he was seeing in the field from the drill method. I assume your surgery went well… Ive had a handful of friends get drilled and know prolly 20+ who’ve gotten chiseled, and even in that small group those who’ve been drilled had more complaints while I’ve only heard of one who got chiseled and experienced extended pain. I’m very surprised your doc recommended against it.

@@brettbarley Mine went well. Immediate relief. My surgeon was Dr. Strasnick. He is board certified and also teaches. He went to UCLA. He has done thousands of them and told me he has had to correct some botched chisel jobs. I think he knows what he is talking about. Being board certified is important. My primary care doc also cautioned against the chisel.

It's all relative. If you are comparing the OBX to the gulf coast, Georgia, South Carolina where the continental shelf kneecaps waves before they ever reach the shore, it's one of the best places on the East Coast to surf. However, if you are comparing the Outerbanks to G-land, Cloadbreak, Skeleton Bay, Ragland, etc, it is not in that class of surf zones. That said, I would love to see your skill set applied to a day of days on the OBX with double overhead spitting barrells. Can your talk match your ability?

Ahh wouldn't be a Barely Vlog without a smug "woe is me" rant from Brett. It gets old dude seriously. You can't honestly say OBX gets crowded (I was out there that day as well and no it was not "crowded") and you of all people should know what a real crowd is and what comes with it. One novice got in your way the entire session after the poor chap got stuck on the inside? Cry a river. A real crowded lineup you'd have that on every wave but yet we still make it work don't we? I'd rather have a few inexperienced out there with the crew instead of hearing about them on the nightly news because they ventured out to an isolated sand bar with no one around just so Brett Barley can be by himself and preach safety lol. But then on the other hand everyone should have listened to you and just stayed home and isolated themselves from Covid instead of trespassing on Barley's Kingdom.
@brettbarley
@brettbarley Жыл бұрын
Dude you for real?? 😂😂 not sure how you missed the entire point of what I was saying. The crowd wasn’t the problem… I wasn’t complaining about it being crowded. I was sharing concern about people putting themselves out in conditions they can’t handle. It’s dangerous for them and others. Same reason I don’t go out at Waimea or outer reefs in Hawaii is cause I’m not prepped for it… I don’t put myself out where I can’t handle it and make sure I’m not putting others in danger either cause of my inability. I have to heed the same assessment of my skills VS the waves as anyone else. That entire statement had ZERO to do with not catching waves or some selfish reason haha. Ya it was a bummer the guy was in the way, but whatever… the point was he shouldn’t have been out in waves like that. Also in relation to covid…. Pretty safe to say i moved on from that whole isolation thing within 4 weeks once I realized what was going on. So not sure why you’re bringing up a 3yr old story haha
