Have to say thanks a lot! I was doing this exact thing, after exporting I would listen in WMP through headphones or laptop speakers just as quick reference, and it didn't sound anything like the way I mixed it in FL! There were some enhancements enabled in media player as well. I turned them off, messed with the export quality, and now monitoring through my Focusrite 2i4 and it sounds EXACTLY like how it does in FL now. Can't say thanks enough!

if it's not a settings issue from your media player, it is mostly that the media player is outdated to play high quality files in its finest details. you can test it by publishing your music file in a streaming platform for a private preview to ear if it's still match the mix in the DAW. also bless for all your guides Michael, you're doing legendary work for rising creative composers.

808s and other basslines are typically set to a max polyphony of 1, which makes it monophonic (if you didn't click the 'cut itself' option). In that case, do NOT highlight/click 'disable max polyphony' when exporting. Your bass will be polyphonic and the track will sound like shit after export.

The mixer's Alt-R feature renders the audio and slaps it into the playlist. If you want to see the level of a submix it's ideal. The Master channel file export can sometimes include duplicate instances. For example EZDrummer by default plays to the Master channel. Clips assembled in song creator can be converted to MIDI inside the playlist, this is a duplicate and will cancel frequencies/cause phase issues. My recordings weren't going to submixes, and went straight to the master. Everything was too loud, so I reduced the Master fader. This does not solve the overload problem. It will bring the level below zero, but there will still be hot channels piling up and forcing compression (sounds like shit). Always sum to a submix before going to master. Drum have a submix. Guitars have a submix. Bass has a submix. These are submixed again, then go as a duplicate to the master. This provides every opportunity to correct the levels to create a proper sum.

Unique twist I had on that last issue: When I finally got a good, decent set of speakers to use (was relying only on headphones and the dreaded cheap "plug your audio to an instrument amp" solution), I noticed that when I listened to podcasts and whatnot, the sound was too flat and couldn't hear the highs well enough. I went into my driver's settings to boost some of the highs, and it worked, but eventually I noticed that whenever I used ASIO4ALL, everything ended up sounding darker than usual. I had totally forgotten than in FL ASIO, that boost I did was active, while in ASIO4ALL, the boost was bypassed.

Note : The best option is to always cut remainder and instead tell FL Studio EXACTLY where the song stops using markers. I believe it's the "Loop" marker type you're looking for in this instance. You can also add a start loop to tell FL Studio where the song begins. This way you're 100% in control of where it stops (and you can factor in reverb easily as well if you want)

Hi Mike. I followed all your steps (mixing & EQ steps too) and my song is sounding good, exactly how it sounds in FL Studio using ATH M50x headphones. But when I use my iphone 6s earphones to test what it would sound like to normal listeners, it sounds very muddy and distorted. Have you experienced this problem? I also tried with a Betron in-ear earphone and it sounds muddy but not as bad as on the iphone 6s earphone. I tried this with the DT 770 headphones and returned them for this ATH M50X because it was sounding great on them, but way different on normal earphones like iphone 6s’s and Betron earphones.

I have a situation where i export my mix as a .wav file (made sure all my export settings are as per the settings in your video) but when i play the .wav back in windows media player/ groove player, the synths seem to sound a lot different (much weaker and compressed almost), i also checked the players equalizer settings and they are flat, so theres nothing weird going on there. I then copied the same .wav file into song mode in FL and played it directly through the master (no effects) and it sounds exactly before i exported the track. Strange. I tried using edison to record that .wav directly into FL to give me another .wav file and WALA, when i play this new .wav file in windows media player/ groove player it sounds how i expected to sound. Seems to be a long winded way but i can’t get my exports to sound how they should simply by exporting.

try mixing in mono. i usually do gain staging in mono because if it sounds good in mono , it will sound good in stereo. What you are describing with the audio drivers not being up to snuff is so true. When i record my piano and listen to it back with my Focusrite it sounds very good but when I switch the output to my speakers it sounds god awuful. Like you, I also started looking for ways to fix an issue which wasn't caused bu me as well. Now I just know that the built in drivers/hardware are just wack.

Thanks so much for the tid bit in the end about quality depending on the device's audio drivers, all my tracks stutter at exactly 2 minutes without fail when I'm playing them back in groove music, but on my phone they sound great. Liked and subbed!

I found out about the EQ settings iTunes had thrown on (after some stress lol), but I never thought about asio4all VS the Realtek aspect either. Very helpful video!

Thanks for the vid man... The main thing that had me thinking "Damn, I didn't think about that!" was when you brought up the idea of instrumentals or songs sounding different in other things simply because of the factory settings of either the programs EQ or Stereo Shaper or what have you. Once again amazing video man!.... Now I'm about to go into both of my music playback programs on my computer and dead all those settings...
