Rj, this looks like a good modder, pickups , machine heads and bridge. About the demo, get someone to come in rip a few good lines, if the neck is playable that person will do a good job.

A ceramic humbucker can sound dark if it is wound enough. Usually companies don't like to spend money and so don't wind the pickups enough. Also, it is my understanding that the sound the pickup is mainly in the core and the winding. So the type of magnet in a humbucker or p90 is not that important. the bar underneath the pickup is to magnetize the string.

" Your first sentence says why the magnet matters a whole bunch as do the materials used to make the rest of the pickup in conjunction with the chosen magnet type. "A ceramic humbucker can sound dark if it is wound enough. Usually companies don't like to spend money and so don't wind the pickups enough." This is why they use that combination of ceramic magnet, brass plate, and low winding count... it's cheap. And every time the pickup sounds like garbage. Ceramic magnets and brass baseplates will result in frequency cancellation that can be beneficial at higher output from more wire being wrapped around it. Larry DiMarzio discovered this when he made the original Dimarzio super distortion. If you use a low winding count with brass or nickel silver plates and ceramic magnets there is still higher output but only because the magnet is doing all the work and since there is no significant frequency cancellation the tone is loud and harsh because a ceramic magnet holds a lot of energy. a lot more magnetic energy than an alnico magnet. There's a number system to help know which ones have higher output. I.E. Alnico 2 is lower output than alnico 5 which is lower than alnico 8 which is lower than ceramic 2 which is lower than ceramic 5 which is lower than ceramic 8. etc. this is just what I have learned by asking those more knowledgeable than me and not from building pickups so I could have some of this wrong but it has served me well when buying pickups. I didn't mean to go on like this.. nerding out I guess.

There is a lot to like with those guitars. Great bang for your buck. Only thing I hear people complaining about is the quality control can be a little lacking at times but if that's the case just bring it to somebody to do a setup. Even with the added expense of having to pay for a setup guitar will be well worth it

I bought that same guitar several weeks ago. Mine required some fret work, although it wasn't terrible. The tuners are a 12:1 ratio which makes fine tuning tough IMO. The pickups sound decent, although I had to lower mine way down because there was so much output on the low E it sounded like my speaker was going to shred. Like mine, your neck probably needs shimmed, that way the saddles can be raised and the screws won't be too high. Would I buy it again? No. Better off getting a firefly at roughly twice the cost. Most of the components on those don't really require an upgrade, although many elect for new pickups.

I had not considered that the issue with the saddle screws might be fixed with a shim 🤦‍♂️. Great tip thanks. It's funny that you mentioned Firefly because I get the feeling that these might actually be made in the same factory as Firefly impossible a couple of other online brands as well. The pickups in the fojill remind me of pickups from a Glarry and the headstock shape is similar to a firefly and the neck is roasted like a firefly... 🤔

Buy short screws they are cheap, nothing wrong with neck so don’t mess with the neck.

If it is a veneer if you move it you will see movement. if it is photo flame it won't.

Right. this one doesn't move. Recently I found out that IYV guitars use paper flame and it moves. I think they put some reflective material in the paint.

They do. The pickups in the fesley are a little better but 90% of people will change them in both guitars so it's really a matter of preference

When I read the description for a Fesley super strat on amz, I believe it said the fretboard was a composite material. I know the descriptions are often not accurate, esp with the china products, but I think I would shy away from composite wood components on a guitar.

@ I understand your feeling about composites but consider that then you have to rule out some expensive guitars too. Gibson for example still uses Richlite, a material used to weatherproof buildings and to make synthetic lumber for outdoor applications like furniture, decking, etc. on some guitars and they started using that in the 80's IIRC so that's on thousands of guitars. Others use it too. most "composites" are bits and pieces of in house wood that have no other use so they laminate it together with an epoxy type material and turn it into boards that are more stable than the wood it's made from. This minimizes waste, I like that. The fesley fretboard does not look like a composite material to me. it looks like a standard inexpensive maple neck with a notch cut into the middle for the truss rod and the maple fretboard was glued on top. If it is a composite it is one made with maple wood. That increased stability is considered a desirable trait by instrument builders so laminates really aren't a bad choice for fretboards just a cheap one... Unless a high end builder uses it then that's a money grab IMO. I'm okay with them finding uses for what would otherwise be thrown away but i'm not paying $8k for a les paul with a plastic fretboard. I own a Harley Benton I paid $135 for with a maple laminate board that's stained to look like rosewood and it's great. lol sorry for the rant.
