i can tell you it can only work with Ifrit and Alastor because the canned animation for switching is punching the ground for Ifrit and the canned animation Dante has this episode when lightning shocked for Alastor.

Yes, I hated that. I think the assaults actually need to kill you with theirs and that fucks up your rank for that level. So if you want that S rank you have to play through that difficulty again.

Wrong, Woolie. There is another enemy that has a specific kill state. The Blades (the lizard men) have this thing that, if knocked down face down, and if you do a helm breaker on their back while they're still lying down, it insta-kills them. But, you are right in that no other DMC game has done that since...

I think the timing's pretty specific too, like you have to plant them on their backs, and their legs have to be in the air as your Helm Breaker/Dive Kick attack lands.

Honestly, I don't think it's THAT specific. As long as they are lying face down (as it does NOT work if they are lying face up), a Helm Breaker/Dive Kick will be an insta-kill. I even managed to do it JUST as they attempted to get up. Of course, hitting them while their legs are still in the air is the most optimal, as it gives them less time to get back up (as their recovery is kinda quick), but it's not necessary. Really, the only hard part is actually getting the to land on their bellies in the first place, as they seem to love to tumble backward and lie face up.

I was too much of a scrub to even unlock that enemy, but I think DMC would be a different kind of awesome if you could chain instant kills and shut out a squad of enemies by playing super precisely. 'Single cut' is still stylish as hell.

Oh, you were hit with "Would you like to switch to "Easy Auto"?" weren't you? Yeah... I did the same years ago. I was such a massive scrub, that my first three playthroughs of the game were on easy... but then I found out that a number of things were locked out, and it always remained on Easy, even on subsiquent playthroughs. I learned, that day, to never play on Easy... As for killing a string of enemies in succession, there are two games that actually features that mechanic. Shinobi and Nightshade for the PS2 (though, Shinobi is the better one of the two). If you want fast paced, demon slicing and chain killing action, that's the game for you.

I can't believe it took you guys so long to play this game. But it makes me happy that you are finally doing it. I played this a few months back for the first time (partly because of you guys) and I had a blast. But I have to say, Pat, you are an absolute beast. I struggled so much with that Shadow monster, and Phantom. And almost every boss, really. This is the first time I see anyone decent playing the game. Btw. I'm playing DMC 4 now and it's a lot easier (and hopefully I'm a lot better at these kind of action games now because of my DMC journey). The overall quality improvement helps too.

Iirc the Shadows have a quick kill too. If you jump on the spike during the thrust attack you can stand on it and pump lead into their face and it puts them into their death mode from what I remember.

Also, there is concept art of a "zombie cat" (it may have been re-purposed into Shadow) and more fleshy-looking Marionettes from the RE4 stages of DMC1's development. Griffon was also planned to be an enemy in the RE4 prototype - there are concept arts of a zombie chick and fully-grown zombie bird. Nobodies (late-game enemies) are VERY RE-like, the design looks like it barely changed as the development shifted. The mission structure was supposedly introduced because the testers got confused and didn't know where to go and what to do.

If yellow orbs are bad because of they're just mistake tolerance, shouldn't blue orbs also be bad by association? Because the entire concept of health in any kind of action game is mistake tolerance. But more max health is permanent while a 1 up is temporary, so it's all around still much better.

there's already a score penalty for taking damage so you get blue orbs and take the damage penalty without having to suffer the penalty for using a continue or an item also as you get farther in the game attacks will kill you in one hit if you aren't buying blue orbs also ALSO having max health feels good but to an extent you're right and a lot of top players just leave the health bar at default because they don't get hit anyway

Fun fact: Charge Shot is in the game and changes element based on the fact if you have Alastor or Ifrit equipped. You just have to aim and hold square for a bit and then your gun will glow and BOOM, charge shot.
