Moving forward anything shot with the GH5 will be shot with the Natural Profile. The talking heads you saw in this video that weren't labeled along with a lot of my more recent videos was shot on a Sony a6400 with either no picture profile at all or in SLog-2!

Jake McHugh have you played with HLG? To my eyes the colors are very similar to the Natural profile, it needs a little adjustment in post, a color space transform/lut and some contrast adjustment, but it has colors like natural and much more dynamic range.

@@JakeMcHugh I chose CineD color profile at first, because it required less work making the footage look as close as it is possible to footage from my older camera, Sony HXR NX100. But, I often get some weird yellowish-green colour on people's faces and hairs and that simply doesn't exist in reality. Especially indoors. I'll try with natural profile, and see how it goes.

Your video promoted me to try the various colour profiles on my GH5M2 as I'd always used 'natural' because that's what other KZbinrs recommended. After an afternoon walking around trying the profiles, the best, in my humble opinion, was either Portrait, Landscape, or Standard, all of which didn't need any grading which is what I need. The Natural profile looked alittle too light. Great vid, thanks

I was comparing the two profiles myself today. Natural looks good straight out of the camera. Cinelike D requires just a bit more work in post (not that much if someone has some experience in colour grading) but in my opinion it handles exposure and contrast much better, especially in tricky light situations.

Natural profile definitely is preferable for vlogging, but I can see the “cinematic” look being more prominent with the cinelike D and I can there’d be times when that’s better (maybe for short films or something). Also, what lens did you use for this video? I recently bought a GH5.
@JakeMcHugh
@JakeMcHugh 4 жыл бұрын
Good point, I think it really depends on what work you are doing and how much time you want to spend in post color grading. For the talking head parts where I’m comparing the two profiles I was using the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 (I used this lens about 95% of the time I would say) and for the part of the kids on the bikes I was using the helios 44m-4 on a speedbooster. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Just a small nitpick for your edification... LPCM audio or Linear Pulse Code Modulation is fully uncompressed digital audio. It's been the industry standard for recording capture and playback of digital audio for decades. FLAC, Apple Lossless, Dolby TrueHD (aka Meridian Lossless Packing), and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless codecs are used to "zip" or pack LPCM audio files to help with file sizes and bitrates with modern consumer gear and are deliverable codecs.

Thank you for the video. But I do not understand what you mean by Grades - Basic Grade vs skin tone grade. What editing software are you using? Are you referring to a LUT for a particular editing program? Are you filming in 4K or 1080 for this video? It looks sharper than my videos with the GH5 using Natural and 1080 with 8bit color. I would love some help with getting the sharpest videos with 1080 render for KZbin.
@JakeMcHugh
@JakeMcHugh 3 жыл бұрын
What I mean by basic grade is just adjusting the exposure and saturation a little to get a basic look so the image isn't so flat. For the Skin tone grade I'm just using the Hue vs Hue curve to adjust or pull my skin tones closer to the flesh line on the vectorscope. I use Final Cut Pro X for editing, but the Hue vs Hue curve and other tools (like waveforms and vectorscopes) for color correcting/grading are found in most Editing Software. I don't really use LUTs that often either in post since you have asked as I really don't need to with my workflow. I also shoot, edit and upload all in 4K. If you don't want to shoot in 4k I still recommend editing in a 4k Timeline with your 1080p footage and uploading a 4k file to youtube. With having a 4k file it forces youtube to use a higher bitrate when playing which makes for a better quality image on the platform. I hope this all helps and thanks for watching!

Off topic but what's the dynamic range difference between Natural and Cine-V. Thinking to shift from Cine-D as well for quick turn around videos.
@JakeMcHugh
@JakeMcHugh 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I think Natural is around 10 useable stops if I recall correctly. I don't know about Cine-V, but I do know that Cine-D is around 10.5 so I'm guessing it will be around there. I don't really pay much attention to the numbers when it comes to dynamic range because it's usually fairly close when not using the LOG profiles. I will say from experience that I do find the hightlights to be extreme at times with the natural profile so I recommend nailing exposure as best as you can in camera. I hope this helps and Thanks for watching!

Can I ask why so many picture profile videos seems to pull down the sharpness to -5 ? Does it help in post? Color grading? Or something else?
@skepsys
@skepsys Жыл бұрын
it's just a preference/subjective thing. too sharp looks too digital, and in order to make the video more filmic, sharpness is dropped to the minimum, also u can add diffusion filter to make it even less sharp, resulting in a softer image which can be subjectively more pleasing or more similar (in terms of softness) to film. you want to (if you aim for softer) keep the details but remove any artificial sharpness (in-camera sharpness from the sharpness parameter is artificially added on the natural sharpness that comes from it being - if it is - a 4k video and from the lens. you keep the sharpness from resolution and lens, but remove the artificially added one). u can also use a softer lens, further softening the image, and on top of it all, add softness in the editing software, afterwards. but all this only if you aim for softness. also its better to have it softer in the camera, in case you change your mind in editing at some point (if you leave the artificial sharpness on in camera and then decide in editing that u want it softer, it wont look quite right when u try to unsharpen an already sharpened image).

I'm pretty sure that most of all the Panasonic Cameras allow you to be able to change photo settings, even the 1" sensor cameras like yours. What you will want to do is go under the photo style settings and change it to Natural. It will probably be set to Standard by default which is a good profile for straight out of camera colors as well. You may be able to adjust some settings inside the photo style like Contrast, Saturation, Noise Reduction etc. but for your case I would just start with the default settings since your camera won't be able to record all the data that the GH5 can with shooting in 10 bit and then if you feel like you really need to change anything from there you can play around with it. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

Question, so I’m a G9 user but how come when it comes to video creatives usually put noise and sharpness and -5, Dont you want a sharp image?
@JakeMcHugh
@JakeMcHugh 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! The reason I have always done it is because I want the most accurate reading from the sensor as possible. With shooting in 4k we have so much detail as is and you don't want the camera to over do it with sharpness. If we leave the sharpness up, the camera is going to jack up the image with Artificial sharpness instead of what the sensor is actually recording. It is then baked in our footage and there is nothing we can do about it in post. You can always add it in post if you feel the need to. I feel like you can have "too sharp" of an image when it comes to video and this is apparent when looking at skin. You don't want to see ever pore of the subject you are shooting. This is why people may use Pro Mist Filters or a vintage lens when shooting video as well. For Noise Reduction it really depends on what type of lighting you are shooting in. I mostly shoot outside or in a control lighting situation, so I don't have to worry about noise as much as someone who may be shooting in low light more often. The noise reduction settings in camera will soften the image a little bit as well and once again it will be baked into the footage and there will be nothing we can do about it. You can always add noise reduction in post if you really need it. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

@JakeMcHugh 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, yes the picture profile doesn't matter when shooting in RAW. The only thing I have seen where it affects RAW images is on Sony Cameras, and I'm not completely sure on that. Shooting RAW is best because it captures all the data it receives from the camera's sensor in an uncompressed, untouched file which allows you to recover or edit photos that were not the best exposed. When shooting in JPEG sometimes the details that were captured from the Camera's sensor is removed and the look (from the picture profile) is then baked into the image and you can't edit or move the colors around as much. I hope this helps!

Very rarely, the only time I would really use it is if I’m vlogging. Thanks for watching!

I did a lot in cine D. But natural seems better for my talking head shots. I will test it out ^^ I like the gh5 I think it is a very good camera

Yeah I think natural helps a lot with the skintones compare to Cinelike D. It is a really great camera for the money. Thanks for watching!

Can any camera experts help me here are my options Xt4, gh5, g9, blackmagic 4k, A7s iii I'm looking to use them for all around Videography, like car broll, real estate video, basically a good broll camera with possibly vlogging and photo features. I know the Sony is too expensive for me but would he a great perfect option. Xt4 was solid untill I saw its stabilisation which is terrible. Black magic is a beast but lack autofocus which might be annoying, no stabilisation (but I could in the future buy a vlogging camera and have a good video camera that doesn't need autofocus, so blackgamic might be a good idea) G9 has decent autofocus, good quality, great stabilisation and pretty good video features. Gh5 has unlimited recording, older and not as good sensor, worse autofocus, good stabilisation aswell. I need help because I can't decide! Hopefully somone can help. (if I'm gonna get a Xt4 the blackmagic is cheaper and is a much better option so I don't think I want the Xt4)

It depends on your needs. Out of all of those cameras the XT4 or the G9 is the best hybrid camera video/photo. The best video is as you say the blackmagic and GH5. But best overall for video is 7s iii, since it has stellar autofocus and the best low light. So you could use that for videography and for vlogging as well.

@@ahojahojish wait wtf I just noticed. The gh5 and g9 both need a external recorder to do 4k 60p at 10bit 🤯 that literally gives me no reason to go for the gh5 over the g9. What do you think about this?
@ahojahojish
@ahojahojish 4 жыл бұрын
@@Provolt For me its not a big deal. You can do 4K 60 in 8 bit. Or you can go 1080p 60 in 10bit 422. Which I have to be honest the lumix cameras have really really sharp 1080p and I cant see much difference between the 4K and 108p. Seems like you really need a pro cinema camera. Which on the other hand is not good for vlogging or shooting stills. You cant have everything in one body. As I said the GH5 or G9 will be the best options as far as hybrids go. I would choose the GH5 is video is the primary focus. Then the G9 or XT4 if you want more photography options and abit better autofocus. Then again, if you need a cinema camera, then you wont really use autofocus and use manual focus anyways, so just get the black magic, but be prepared its useless for vlogging and photography and pretty much no autofocus.

@@ahojahojish but what video features does the gh5 include over the g9? All I've seen is a inferior older sensor, higher mgbps (which idk if its really that important), unlimited time limit and better slomotion but that's it? Am I correct? Doesn't seem like a good tradeoff just for worst autofocus and photo features
@ahojahojish
@ahojahojish 4 жыл бұрын
@@Provolt Yeah, I wouldnt say the GH5 has superior slomo, its the same. It has features like anamorphic shooting, vectorscope and waveforms (which you have on the G9 also after the update) The G9 can also do 4K 10bit in body, so after the update it basicaly has most of the GH5 features + better iso performance. But to be honest for video the autofocus isnt good on either of them, G9 is a little bit better, but the autofocus is still slow and not reliable.
