If he doesn’t wait for the 50 series, better in my mind to spend a bit more and get a 4070 Ti Super for the extra VRAM.

A 12900K isn't enough? WTF?! I'm using a 12900K with a 1440p/144Hz G-Sync monitor. The 3080Ti paired with it has no problems running 1440p games on very high settings @ 100+ fps in every game I've thrown at it, minus Cyber-Punk be a system killer. Overclock it to 5.1 Ghz and all is good!

For the first question, I have to strongly disagree with this advice. Only because I have a 12700F with a liquid cooler and a 7900XT and that CPU can handle 200ish FPS on 1440p with basic or balanced settings and maxed out textures. So he will not need an upgrade for his CPU if he upgrades his GPU for 1440p 144 hz he can max out his settings on COD. I ran benchmarks with my super ultrawide at different resolutions

1440p is going to age like milk on 8GB of VRAM. The CPU is a solid upgrade but the 3070 is not going to last another two generations when it won't support the newest DLSS.

CPU 14900K (14700K would also be fine) then GPUs. Don't really know which games but a lot are CPU bound. 12900K still are nice for casual gaming and most games. Actually in a similar boat with this one with our home/gaming machines, though have a 7900XTX, perhaps a 3090 used is also an option to upgrade that 3070 or wait for 50 series. 5090 would be the best option but 7900XTX are decent (4080S are priced higher than they should be). Playing musical upgrade hand me down GPUs is a great option. What upgrades to make are dependent on pricing and whether waiting is worth it. I would be for doing the CPU first and then GPU next I think though we are close to new CPU/GPU later this year or early next year on 50 series. Getting to keep the motherboard for the 12900K to 14900K is good, so I think doing the CPU first makes sense.

I know this isn't necessarily the right place to ask but, I ending up getting a MSI B650 pro edge wifi last year. I thought it went bad because a few months later I couldn't post to bios, and I tried replacing the mobo and ram, but it actually turned out to be my cpu which is a 7800x3d. I still don't know what caused my cpu to go bad, but apparently it was the internal memory controller. I don't know what could cause the cpu memory controller to go bad, and amd reddit is no help. As of now the only thing I can assume is running expo caused it. That is the only thing people at microcenter could tell me. They said running negative pbo on the curve optimizer shouldn't do anything. But running expo could conflict as I was undervolting the cpu, while at the same time overvolting the ram. . I .. I dont know. I still don't know, and asking amd got no response. I know my memory wasn't on the support ram list until recently it was put on the list in February on MSI compatibility list. I'm updated on bios, and it is a 6400 cl32 gskill trident. @1.4v I no longer run expo on it at all, and even when I did I capped it to 6000 speed. But now I just run stock jedec speeds at 4800 in fear that I might cause something.

Respectfully, I disagree with your take here. 12900k is more than enough for 4070S at 1440p. If he was upgrading to a 4090, he would have a better case to upgrade his CPU. Great video nonetheless!

It is "enough", but do we do this for "enough"? The cost to replace it at this point isn't huge and it won't get cheaper. Might as well, it'll be a nicer experience, if not a massive boost.

Personally im sitting at 5800x3d 32gb ram and rtx 3070 at 2560x1080p resolution. Im waiting for 8000 radeon series to drop as final upgrade since new rtx power cable is too big for my case to use. It allows 162 mm gpu to fit in but cable itself has to have at least 35 mm to consider it safe. And i dont want to keep my case open.. Not many people push this topic onward.

What power supply are you using? They sell great third party connectors that plug directly to the psu and it looks so much nicer and sleeker. I just did this upgrade to my 4080 and I have a thermaltake psu. These cables are under $30 on Amazon with 500+ reviews . Tested it under stress with intense gaming the last week and it works great 😊

That's a lovely combo, but if you can pickup a slightly newer GPU, even a used 3080, it would be a noticeable upgrade for anything recent.

He’s just looking to do a hand down to his other system; not sure if any context if what games they care about or if he has UWQHD monitor; you are getting him into a downward spiral of changing too many variables and then we simply dont know if 13th gen is going to actually give a significant difference and it will lead them into changing ram to ddr5; he bought a 12900k and no1 is going to buy it for remotely close to what he paid for

I came looking for 1440p gpu AIB BRAND advice and leaving stunned they would recommend an upgrade for a dead socket. E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E knows the 7800x3d is the way to go for gaming and MC is always running sales on bundles (last month $448 for 7800x3d,mobo,32GB 6000 ram). With AMD supporting AM5 through 2027 and 9800x3d coming this fall, anyone who supports a current Intel chip with all the problems is stupid imo. If OP wants better 1440p/144 with RT/PT, keep the 12900k and get a 4070 TiS or 4080 Super to guarantee all the bells and whistles.

Well, we dont know what the dude is doing with his system. If its mostly gaming Id replace the GPU and get a 14th gen CPU later when its cheaper.. 3TB and a massive RAM makes me think hes doing production, but the 3070 doesnt make much sense at all with that CPU. So no clue, without more info.

@kevinbrook703310 ай бұрын
I think the point here is that the 14900K would go into the same mobo as the 12900K so a much easier upgrade. Also, a 7800X3D is purely better for gaming, and worse for most other use cases, it has only half as many threads as the 14900K, 16 vs 32. For myself, even though gaming is my primary high demand use case I couldn't bring myself to buy a CPU with only 16 threads any more than I would buy a PC today with only 32GB of ram. If the poster doesn't care about non gaming tasks the 14700K would be the better option, just slot it straight into his current motherboard. Switching to AMD would necessitate a new CPU, mobo and maybe ram. If he's upgrading the GPU as well it's better to just hand down that PC to his wife and buy a new one at that point. If I was in this guy's shoes, I'd wait until the 5000 series cards and intel's 15th Gen release, then just buy a whole new PC, probably around Christmas, early next year, and pass on the current one to his wife. He sounds like he just wants to upgrade his GPU only though for now, and maybe use that with a new PC later, so Tech's idea makes sense. If a 14900K gives his existing PC another 3 years or so.

For aiming fps you need first CPU capable of such framerates. And than something like Hogwart Legacy comes where you have 80fps on the fastest chips, so don't expect all games and maybe even for years to come. This guy should first get his expectations confronted with reality like that, not advised to get fastest whatever. And then another Hogwart comes, so ah *, here we go again.
