My work PC was windows 11. I used a bunch of power shell commands to disable a bunch of the stuff to make it more similar to windows 10. Like making a new folder, you have to click the option for “more options” in the right click menu before the option even shows.

I have two older systems that aren't Windows 11 "compatible" and I'm swapping them out with newer systems so I can sell these on before they lose even more value. Keep in mind that M$ has supported CPU's going all the way back to Skylake... they're just not the desktop CPUs. Likely because they don't want to upset businesses, but are okay screwing over consumers, while creating needless ewaste by obsoleting systems that are still perfectly viable for a lot of people. There's zero reason they couldn't have supported it on older consumer hardware. I'll hopefully be skipping 11 all together.

I'm going to have to switch the computer I access the net, play games, watch videos, etc. to Linux, getting tired of Big Brother MS. Haven't tried using Linux for an entertainment machine for a long time, so not sure how that's going to go. Of course don't think that MS doesn't have it's tentacles in Linux, it does. Guess who is on the board of directors of The Linux Foundation, Microsoft for one, that tells you all you need to know.

You can also try out a VM or distro hop if it doesn't work the first distro (most likely it should). I have a Fedora VM (couldn't get a Nobara one going easily in VirtualBox) in 11. I've nested with Nobara the last few months (Fedora is also snappy). Only thing with newer GPUs sometimes the AMD firmware isn't automatically installed, will notice this watching content. Nvidia also has support now official drivers, not just the open source Noveau is decent. Can do the same things casually in both, Firefox, OnlyOffice, VLC/SMPlayer for movies etc. EXT4 and NTFS both work for archiving data, have an older NAS that works in Linux but doesn't show up in Windows 10/11. MS has their own Azure/cloud services running on Linux and their own Linux distro, server stuff. Linux usually installs in under 10 minutes, grab some nand and go for it. I just keep the Windows and Linux on separate nvmes/ssds (though I do have an old laptop with both that hasn't had issues don't recommend that). I spent a lot of time distro hopping: Nobara feels nice to me atm, ArcoLinux feels good (never got up the patience to install Arch) Manjaro was fine, Mint is good for Ubuntu family, Debian is a bit old but stable. My preferred DEs KDE>XFCE>LXQt>LXDE etc. Best way to find out what you like is just trying different things. I'm more for the lightweight feeling DEs. You can dual boot or go all in once you make the move. Dual booting feels safe for trying out the first times or if I need to run a game in Windows but want Linux otherwise.

In my recent research, I did look into how much it would cost to keep my Windows 10 computer running for another year or two. Even if I got to the point (5 years) where I'd have to start paying to keep 10 secure, the added cost of Windows + some minor upgrades and work on my part, would still be cheaper than a whole new rig. But man that just sounds like a lot of unnecessary and easily avoidable work! Ha! I'm anxious though because my rig will be turning 4 this Fall, the end of its intended lifespan when I planned it out back in 2020. And I kind of wish Windows 12 was just out already.

11 debloated is not horrible, I customize it to look a lot like 10 (left align), CTT has the right click fix to make the right click menu like 10. TPM bypass 11 on older machines (I did install on an old i3 2100 for fun, Linux is better at that point) or early adopt Windows 12 if that is out. Tiny 11 is hassle free. The MS upgrade tool from 10 to 11 wouldn't be that clean of an install, would better to grab the Microsoft 11 ISO and debloat it manually afterwards. Don't think you need a new build just some fresh nand preferably for a new install. Nobara is pretty nice on the Linux side. A fresh install won't cure everything but it can speed up the 4 year old pc fine. I think when 10 goes pay, 11 is close enough I don't notice much difference once the UI is sorted. A new 11 install is snappy just slows down over time. I think I've been living in this round of 11 installs since around October, so it has gotten better with time.

Fresh install 11 on fresh nvme (/nand) will be less bloated than the upgrade. Both will work though. If you plug in the old drive later (after installing 11) that would likely still work for recognizing the license. Still a good idea to backup the files anyway then install.

To your last response to the question of using a 10 yr old computers windows 10 install and transferring to a new pc.. yes it will be the equivalent of using a new install from a boot drive BUT if the 10 yr old pc was not setup with uefi boot and was using legacy or csm then your issue wil be that system will not update to Windows 11 without having to manually make changes to registry to convert to uefi, also by default new motherboards are setup for uefi so likely it won't boot without enabling legacy/csm in bios.. then you would need to change it all back to uefi and secure boot and enable tpm if you wanted to upgrade to 11. Again ensuring partition structure is adequate for uefi boot. All that additional work incl resetting cloning and swapping drives just doesn't make sense over paying 3 dollars for a small usb stick and using the media creation tool to do it right from the start.. point is made irrespective of whether you install 10 or 11

Windows 11 will never require AVX instructions, which is the stated reason from Microsoft some cpus are not supported, and here's why, Intel's current lineup has P-cores and E-cores, P-cores have avx capability but the E-cores do not. And the windows scheduler cannot determine which cores have AVX and which do not. Also TPM is irrelevant. Not that anyone should care, I ran windows xp to 2012, 7 to 2019, and I'm only on windows 10 because windows 7 didn't have drivers for am4.

Is Microsoft in cahoots with hardware makers (it is itself a hardware maker) to force PC users to buy new hardware in order to keep using Windows and be relatively safe against malicious software? I have a 14-yr-old Mazda that can safely use 2024 gasoline and safely operate on roads built yesterday. Barring government intervention, it will still operate safely on 2034 roads and will still run fine on 2034 gasoline. Sure, computer hardware progresses faster than automotive hardware, but the principle here is that Microsoft _could_ make new versions of software run on hardware that's as old as they wish to support. They just don't wish to do something that would cut too deeply into their partners' profits. Frankly, it's surprising they've kept supporting Win 10 this long.

Barneclese used to code for MS. He said the kernel for Win10 was the same as Win7, so there was no reason for MS to cut off support for 7 when they did. The updates would be the same for both. MS just did that to push users into Win10. In theory tho, I could see a cpu hardware issue being discovered that couldn't be corrected in code. I read that an earlier USB had a fundamental flaw like that.

They actually got it right with Windows 10...first time I actually liked using Windows since XP... its popular AF nearly 10 years later.. more people use 10 than 11 even though its a free upgrade... that should speak volumes... that's some XP like love. That being said. If Microsoft were to capitulate... Windows 8.1 style on Windows 11 and remove the literal malware forcing updates and whatnot... that would keep me from switching to linux..... barely.

Microsoft, why not just unlock Win 11 to all desktops, most can support it, only because you don't accept some cpu's that you don't have in your own line up.

So by a new computer to upgrade to an extremely lacking windows 11? I don't agree that getting a new pc for 11. That's a terrible reason to upgrade.

Calling windows 11 a upgrade is kind of a oxymoron. Still running 10 on my 7800x3d.

I did free upgrade on all my comptuers to win 11. A rtx 4080 i had before would crash on windows 10 and motherboard drivers wouldnt install: win 11 ran perfect with it. Plus update mobo bios that helps as well.

HOW can i trust win 12 when win 11 updates breaks more things than fixing it. I blame DEI shenanigan if this update breakage keeps up than fixing the OS.

The moment Micro$oft forces me to pay for updates is the moment I jump to Linux. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who will do that.

I'll just keep windows 10 on my pc and not pay them shit, I'll keep it like that until the PC is e-waste and that won't be for awhile cause it has an 8 core R7 5800x and 32GB RAM.

Make sure you don’t have any important documents or payment accounts on it. When you buy stuff use a gift card or something. Or just don’t connect it to the internet anymore because without security updates you take a big risk!

Windows keys are universal for all recent versions since upgrading became a thing. Anyone with a 10 key can use it on 11. Hell you can use a Windows 8 key on Windows 11

Or you can make steps even if their baby steps to eventually leave windows for Linux Mint cinnamon, and never have to worry about such nonsense ever again and actually get full ownership and control back on what it's supposed to be your PC anyways

No security Windows workaround: 1. Get an email acct that ONLY opens serious, known emails for banking, ordering stuff online, & paying bills. (No fun .gifs from grandma.) 2. Make a Linux bootable thumb drive. Boot to that only to do your banking, etc. 3. Have another thumb drive to store important documents. Never plug it in unless the linux boot drive is being used.
