I have two older systems that aren't Windows 11 "compatible" and I'm swapping them out with newer systems so I can sell these on before they lose even more value. Keep in mind that M$ has supported CPU's going all the way back to Skylake... they're just not the desktop CPUs. Likely because they don't want to upset businesses, but are okay screwing over consumers, while creating needless ewaste by obsoleting systems that are still perfectly viable for a lot of people. There's zero reason they couldn't have supported it on older consumer hardware. I'll hopefully be skipping 11 all together.

You can also try out a VM or distro hop if it doesn't work the first distro (most likely it should). I have a Fedora VM (couldn't get a Nobara one going easily in VirtualBox) in 11. I've nested with Nobara the last few months (Fedora is also snappy). Only thing with newer GPUs sometimes the AMD firmware isn't automatically installed, will notice this watching content. Nvidia also has support now official drivers, not just the open source Noveau is decent. Can do the same things casually in both, Firefox, OnlyOffice, VLC/SMPlayer for movies etc. EXT4 and NTFS both work for archiving data, have an older NAS that works in Linux but doesn't show up in Windows 10/11. MS has their own Azure/cloud services running on Linux and their own Linux distro, server stuff. Linux usually installs in under 10 minutes, grab some nand and go for it. I just keep the Windows and Linux on separate nvmes/ssds (though I do have an old laptop with both that hasn't had issues don't recommend that). I spent a lot of time distro hopping: Nobara feels nice to me atm, ArcoLinux feels good (never got up the patience to install Arch) Manjaro was fine, Mint is good for Ubuntu family, Debian is a bit old but stable. My preferred DEs KDE>XFCE>LXQt>LXDE etc. Best way to find out what you like is just trying different things. I'm more for the lightweight feeling DEs. You can dual boot or go all in once you make the move. Dual booting feels safe for trying out the first times or if I need to run a game in Windows but want Linux otherwise.

In my recent research, I did look into how much it would cost to keep my Windows 10 computer running for another year or two. Even if I got to the point (5 years) where I'd have to start paying to keep 10 secure, the added cost of Windows + some minor upgrades and work on my part, would still be cheaper than a whole new rig. But man that just sounds like a lot of unnecessary and easily avoidable work! Ha! I'm anxious though because my rig will be turning 4 this Fall, the end of its intended lifespan when I planned it out back in 2020. And I kind of wish Windows 12 was just out already.
@dianaalyssa87269 ай бұрын
11 debloated is not horrible, I customize it to look a lot like 10 (left align), CTT has the right click fix to make the right click menu like 10. TPM bypass 11 on older machines (I did install on an old i3 2100 for fun, Linux is better at that point) or early adopt Windows 12 if that is out. Tiny 11 is hassle free. The MS upgrade tool from 10 to 11 wouldn't be that clean of an install, would better to grab the Microsoft 11 ISO and debloat it manually afterwards. Don't think you need a new build just some fresh nand preferably for a new install. Nobara is pretty nice on the Linux side. A fresh install won't cure everything but it can speed up the 4 year old pc fine. I think when 10 goes pay, 11 is close enough I don't notice much difference once the UI is sorted. A new 11 install is snappy just slows down over time. I think I've been living in this round of 11 installs since around October, so it has gotten better with time.

To your last response to the question of using a 10 yr old computers windows 10 install and transferring to a new pc.. yes it will be the equivalent of using a new install from a boot drive BUT if the 10 yr old pc was not setup with uefi boot and was using legacy or csm then your issue wil be that system will not update to Windows 11 without having to manually make changes to registry to convert to uefi, also by default new motherboards are setup for uefi so likely it won't boot without enabling legacy/csm in bios.. then you would need to change it all back to uefi and secure boot and enable tpm if you wanted to upgrade to 11. Again ensuring partition structure is adequate for uefi boot. All that additional work incl resetting cloning and swapping drives just doesn't make sense over paying 3 dollars for a small usb stick and using the media creation tool to do it right from the start.. point is made irrespective of whether you install 10 or 11

I have a 14-yr-old Mazda that can safely use 2024 gasoline and safely operate on roads built yesterday. Barring government intervention, it will still operate safely on 2034 roads and will still run fine on 2034 gasoline. Sure, computer hardware progresses faster than automotive hardware, but the principle here is that Microsoft _could_ make new versions of software run on hardware that's as old as they wish to support. They just don't wish to do something that would cut too deeply into their partners' profits. Frankly, it's surprising they've kept supporting Win 10 this long.

Or you can make steps even if their baby steps to eventually leave windows for Linux Mint cinnamon, and never have to worry about such nonsense ever again and actually get full ownership and control back on what it's supposed to be your PC anyways

No security Windows workaround: 1. Get an email acct that ONLY opens serious, known emails for banking, ordering stuff online, & paying bills. (No fun .gifs from grandma.) 2. Make a Linux bootable thumb drive. Boot to that only to do your banking, etc. 3. Have another thumb drive to store important documents. Never plug it in unless the linux boot drive is being used.
