Absolutely beautiful, and the case is honestly breathtaking. My dad has a 9 Tub herschede from around the same time, the case is not as nice as yours though. His was in a fire and my granddad, my dad and I all did our parts to restore it back to just about mint condition. I was able to buffer the chimes enough for it to be super soft and elegant so we don’t have to worry about it waking anyone up, lol.

I just inherited an Herschede grandfather clock. Literally arrived today. I had done research on the clock along with the owner’s manual that was reprinted. On it, my grandparents noted it’s a 50th Anniversary Fourth of July grandfather clock along with the model number that my great grand bought in 1942. My issue is the fact the people who worked on the clock swore up & down it’s a 1915 clock bc of the fact on the inside door there’s a plaque that mentions it won the best at the 1915 World’s Fair. I’ve seen online that this was standard & doesn’t mean it’s from 1915. I honestly don’t know what to think but I think it’s important to know. On a side note, this particular clock business has worked on my grandfather’s clock since the 80’s!
@clockdude15003 жыл бұрын
1915 was the year Herschede won medals for the sound of their tube chimes and style of cases. I believe they used that plaque on all their clocks until 1950 when they switched to a brown plastic one. I have 5 Herschede grandfather clocks, the oldest being from about 1912.

I’ve noticed that too about the chimes. Instead of the usual for notes that the quarter after plays in the last four notes that I would play on the quarter till hour he would play the second for notes of the formality originally meaning you would play the fifth sixth seventh and eighth notes on the full Melody with if it’s the full tune or on the half hour that is. But I don’t bother me as long as the chimes work that’s all that matters
@janetburke27393 жыл бұрын
What a beautiful clock! By the way, do your cats usually "sing along" (meow/howl) when the clock chimes? The caterwauling heard in the background reminds me of my now-departed Miss Cat Black, who would make loud, very important "announcements" regularly around 3 am, usually in conjunction with her best friend Mr. Ratso 🐀. (Mr. Ratso was a small stuffed rodent toy which I enhanced by adding catnip to his polyester stuffing, of course with Miss Cat Black's approval.)

Hello! I own a 1936-ish Hershcede movement similar to this one with a handful of problems; on the “strike” side, the winding cables are all tangled on the arbor that holds the drum, is there a way I can fix that without taking the mvmt apart? Also, the chimes are out of synch, and they get “tired” and stop chiming after about 6 or less hours. Is there a way that I can just save money and fix this easily at home, or Is it scary-taking-movement-apart kinda thing that an actual clockmaker can do? Thanks. I really want it to chime and I’ve always wanted a working herschede 9 tube clock to keep as a heirloom. Thanks! (Wish I could send pictures via KZbin comments so it is easier to explain)😊😊😊😊
@the_clock_guy Жыл бұрын
I have another Herschede from 1938. To fix your tangle, you take the weight off. You will have to release the click with a small screwdriver and manually pull the cable out to it's very end. Then you put the weight on and wind it carefully. Be careful not to kink the cable!! And NEVER remove the weight from a cable driven clock. If you do, you must hang something on the cable to keep it taught. It doesn't have to be very heavy. Just enough to keep the cable from curling up into a birds nest. Please send pictures. theclockguy12@gmail.com

I never intended to sell this clock, but my wife isn't wild about it. She thinks it looks too Victorian. She prefers the painted dial clocks from the New England clockmakers. We currently have our Danial Burnap tall case in the front hall. I had to move the Herschede from our foyer to my workshop in our carriage house. It was so big and heavy that I had to cut a hole in the ceiling, and make an elevator to get the clock upstairs. I am sad that it is not sitting proudly in our Victorian home as it rightly deserves. I wish you would have taken longer on planning of this video. The volume was very low in the very beginning. First remove all animals and people for the period of time to do the video. Or just take still photos and show and tell. You should have written out a script first to give the 4 W's. Who, What, When and Where. You should answer those questions. The video camera was all over the place too fast. Makes it dizzying to watch. I still want more info after watching. Who made the clock and when was it made, where was it made. How did you get the clock? Did you have to repair the clock? How much do clocks like that cost? Will you be keeping it?
@the_clock_guy3 жыл бұрын
I wanted to do a video on this clock for a long time. I realize that I may not get the time I need to do the quality video that this clock deserves. I was watching one of my old videos and noticed that 13 minutes of the 20 minute total was dedicated to this clock. I downloaded it, cut off the beginning, and tried to edit what I could. This video will have to do for now. The Herschede Hall Clock Company made this clock in 1916 in Cincinnati, Ohio. I bought it at a South Jersey auction. The previous owner was a Doctor who owned it for more than 50 years. He was moving to a beach area and didn't want the clock to get ruined. I put new weight cables on the clock because the original ones were different lengths. I have seen this model Herschede clock sell for $25,000. I will do my best to keep this clock as long as I can.

To start with 1916 is no age for Grandfather clock the proper name is Long case clock. You are wrong about it being the best ever made, that is only your opinion. One person who is English comes to mind who would knock spots of what you have is a well known clock maker by the name of Thomas Tompion. Many of his clocks are priceless.
@the_clock_guy2 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. I have previously posted that most people don't know these clocks by their correct names, tall clock, longcase, etc. I use the name "Grandfather Clock" in the description so average people will be able to find these videos. Also, my "Best clock ever made" had a question mark after it.... It was actually a question, not a statement. As for Tompion, I bow to him and his amazing clocks. If you look at my playlist, I actually own a William Clement longcase clock Circa 1690. I am sure you know Clement and Tompion were horological contemporaries in the 17th century. Thanks for your comments.
