Hello sir. I need help with a herschede grandfather clock… 1915 Panama International Exhibition grand prize it isn’t chiming, and the pendulum stops after like 6 3 9 or 10 hours. Maybe even 24..please reply,, it would help a ton if you would make us a video explaining if you still have this movement……

Interesting video especially the stuff about Wanamakers and the Herschede part redesign. If you have time it would be nice to have a video of what the clock sounds like chiming and striking at the customer's house - probably pretty nice with those tubes. When you have to redo bushings that someone has previously done, can you just take a punch and pop out the existing bushing and then install a new bushing in the same hole without having to do any reaming of the plate since that was already done? I would think so but am curious as to what you think. I am working on an Ingraham 'Gila' kitchen clock which has a bunch of previously installed bushings that need to be redone.

Thanks for the comment. As long as the bushings were installed using the same bushing tool that you use, you can pop them out and replace.

I have a Herschede tall case clock that was made in 1913. One of the very early Herschede made movements (I believe they started making their own movements in 1911?). Anyway, I usually turn off the chimes in the night but sometime I forget what quarter the minute hand is on when I turn it off and turn it back on in the morning in the wrong quarter and the chime sequence is off. I guess the early movements are not self-regulating??? I always have to fiddle with it until I get the timing right. Anything to know about these early movements? Love the clock and the movement is very robust. Thanks for the rebuild videos!

Hello Mark; just happen to catch you today on KZbin I have a Herschede 9 tube chime clock. I’ve had serviced a good number of years ago but haven’t been lucky w/recent services in my area. Where are you located from? Presently hasn’t been working for a couple of years now. I’m located in Huntington Beach, CA. Any chance you could refer me someone local capable of servicing my Herschede?Thank you Tony S

This looks like a 1920’s or early 30’s movement judging by the quick peek I got of the moon dial. In the 40’s, they replaced the larger, more pale moon faces with smaller more yellow ones that hid behind the hemispheres better when there was a new moon. I collect a lot of the early ones made before the company moved from Cincinnati to Starkville. I also have a 2 weight Herschede but it’s only a 5 tube. They are quite an ingenious design but can be quite temperamental and cantankerous at times. I was told Herschede designed this movement around the First World War to save on parts like brass since it was needed more for artillery shells and rifle casings. But due to the movement being troublesome, it was dropped from their line of movements after just a few years. Just out of curiosity, where do you obtain the leather for the hammers? I haven’t had any luck finding any that is the proper thickness, always too thin or too thick. Great video by the way, looking forward to the overhaul on the two weight.

Many thanks for the insight my friend. That's very interesting info on why Herschede made the two weight movement. I've worked on a number of them and they are temperamental. I got the leather from a shoe repair shop years ago.

You were spot on with the dates. I found newspaper sections from a Cincinnati newspaper inside the weights used to keep the inserts snug dated August 21 1927. 👍

I also have a herschede tubular grandfather clock. The movement is looks like the movement your working on in the video. My Herscede works well tells good time and chimes, but it doesn't chime at 12, 3, 6, or 9 but at 2, 5, 8, and 11. How can I fix this issue?

I just inherited a Herschede 9 bell 3 train in a Queen Anne case. It was my grandfathers. He was a barber in the Wissonoming section of Philadelphia, but he also sold jewelry and repaired clocks and watches. The clock runs but the chimes are not working. Clock was built in '46.

The weights on mine wires are all tangled off the arbor. How do I fix without taking the movement apart?
