I have shade problems on the sides of my house in greater Austin Texas area. I flipped out the entire backyard and the sides of my house with Zyosia Pallisades and thus far I have a a great looking yard where nothing would grow before! It was invented by Texas A&M. It needs 4 hours of sunlight and is drought tolerant. You cut it at 2” max.

I live in Sacramento which is sort of northern/transition zone. We are in the 9b heartiness zone. A lot of people out here if they do use any fescue blend they will also mix in bluegrass/rye grass as the fescues tend to fry out in our 110-115* 4-5month long summers. Does tend to die back even in shady areas.

I grow a fine fescue mix in NC in a heavy shade area. I don't mow it after around April and it isn't irrigated. About 75% of it dies off in the summer. Always convinced it is going to make it then comes August and it gets nuked

Fine fescue in shade does well in southern TN (the very bottom of the transition zone). The fact that it is shady does help, for sure. I have a mixed fescue lawn (mostly high quality stuff - UnitedSeeds SuperTurf I) with fine and creeping red fescue in the shady areas (roughly 750sqft) and it does great other than slowing growth and browning a bit during the hottest and driest times of the year. I do have irrigation, which helps.

I have fine fescue in my front yard in central Virginia... Mix of Creeping Red Fescue/Hard Fescue/Chewnings Fescue/KBG 25/25/25/25... It's doing pretty good... Much better under the trees than in the spots that get more sun this time of year... I only got it started last fall as part of a full reno so it's still been a learning curve as it is not even a year old yet... The parts that get a little more sun definitely need more water than the rest... One of the more sunny areas has also settled a lot more than anticipated with the 50/50 compost/topsoil mix in put on it as part of filling the area which I had to fill in, so that could be part of it that the roots didn't get as deep as hoped with more clay-ish type soil under it... Overall, it has definitely come in and thickened up since spring started so it seems to take more time to get it to start filling in all the way than the tall fescue/KBG 90/10 mix I have in our back and side yard.

Great video, we have planted trees as memorial trees for family members that have passed away and now we have considerable shade from them, which is nice but it’s a challenge now to keep the yard looking nice?! This fall I’ll over-seed the spots that have thinned out due to that shade but this information you’ve provided will help me going forward. Thanks again

My lawn is very complicated, I have wide open lawn space that gets the intense full sun all day, but then have ornamental trees in my yard that are full shade underneath. I use a mix of about 80% Turf type tall fescue and 20% fine fescue and that works pretty well but still thins out a little every summer probably because I'm mowing it a 4.5 inches tall like the rest of my lawn since they are trees in the middle of my lawn

I have some sort of Fine fescue in my front yard i want to get rid of. It does extremely well in all day direct sun, here in Colorado. It grows in very fast and fills in thin spots. I would say it's an aggressive fine fescue, maybe some sort of creeping fescue, IDK. I don't like the angel hair pasta blades. I've actually been trying to get my zoysia to take over; it will eventually get there.

I am in a transition zone, Las Vegas Nevada, and tall fescue does love the shade in this area. At least it loves the shade once it gets its roots established fully. During the early germination that will not tolerate the sun at all and definitely not the heat. Love your videos. Thank you very much for keeping them interesting and educational.

Have you by chance had any success transforming a lawn that is nothing but compacted and poor draining clay underneath about 3/4 to maybe 1 inch of topsoil; that turns into a mud slick from the beginning of the fall rains (late October) all the way through the end of spring rains (late May), resulting in destroying the grass anywhere people have walked or small dogs have run across? I've been de-thatching and aerating every year as well as top dressing with compost twice a year for the last 5 years and haven't made so much as a smidgen of difference. I even tried over seeding a couple years ago and then again last year and it hasn't made even the slightest bit of difference. Heavy shade over the entire back yard. Suggestions?

It depends on how shady. St. Augustine and some Zoysia will grow in partial shade. You will have to sod with St. Augustine as there are not seeds available for it. You may try fine fescue again, but you have to work hard in the summer to keep it going. Regular fungicide applications are a requirement. That will zap fescue faster than the heat. Many people think the heat killed their fescue when it was actually fungus that got it.
