Always loved the section where Mick had a musician friend who would come home from the pub and watch ten pin bowling on tv with the sound turned down, but he would have a metronome clicking away.

TAB tells you where to play something. That book tells you there are sounds and if you discover the possible ways and places to play them, you'll learn tons about the guitar in the process. He puts an idea out there, tells you how to find them, and lets you teach yourself where they are. Every concept is deep and a springboard to your own command on the instrument, no hint as to what is possible or where you should stop. It's very specific in concepts and very open ended to the ways you can make these ideas your own. Plenty of exercises and suggestions as to practice but no TAB that might suggest that there's only ONE way to do it. As a matter of fact, in the notation, you develop a "map" of where the musical shapes can be found and I've discovered the best parts of the book are "between the pages" when you really "get" what he's saying. For example, he doesn't say you have to train your ear, but in doing these, your intervallic sense is on steroids. You must advance your ear to advance your hands. That's very much in the book. If there was ever a manual for the guitar and how to get music out of it, it's this book.
