L’Oréal Elvive protein recharge leave-in conditioner. 450F heat protection, protein + almond oil. I love this product and it has all the ingredients she described at the beginning. I also have TRESemmé leave-in spray heat Tamer. It has the ingredients too and it’s very easy to apply since it’s a spray. The perfume is very strong in this product though! My heat protectant has dimethicone, which you mentioned, but none of the other things on the list. I did end up with very damaged curls before I cut it really short, but I was straightening almost every day, at like 425 degrees. I want to start straightening again, but not as often, so I’m glad I found this video.

Absolutely do not straighten your hair every day and you had the temperature too high. I have ultra-fine hair I only blowdry and straighten it every 6 weeks on a low setting like 300- 380 F/180-200 C. And I only do one pass with the iron. You might be better off blow drying it straight first only twice a week. no more. My Aveda stylist would be screaming.

Water is terrible because it will make your hair sizzle. Not good. I stay away from anything with water. Most of my heat protectants have “cones”. I don’t mind it because they coat my hair and protect it from heat damage. When I wash my hair I make sure it suds really well and then deep condition it. My scalp is healthy and my is in pretty good shape. 😊

Aren't silicones actually quite bad for your hair? They coat the hair and build up over time - this makes the hair not only heavier (bad for thin/fine hair), but more importantly it makes it difficult to dye your hair. This is particularly relevant for anyone who is interested in bleaching: highlights, belayage, ombre etc.

This channel is quite a science based channel, as she's a trichologist, so many of the sayings that are spread around the general public that make no sense/ are not one size fits all, have already been addressed. She's already got a video on silicones, all the types, all the hidden ones and what to look out for, and how easy it is to remove them Dimethicone, the evil villain and worst of all culprits to the public, does not build up past 5 layers (IF you don't shampoo your hair). Silicones are just like synthetic oils, so everything, even natural oils cause build up. And build up can be shampooed out. Except the general public now also fears efficient shampoos. A good stylist will give your hair a thorough cleanse to remove build up before applying treatments, colour, bleach or straightening (some people have only been using "natural" oils and butters and had to get their hair washed like 4-5 times) Edited to correct spelling

I recommend them. Ciment is too thin as a formula for my thick curly naturally hair that I strengthen so I prefer nectar thermique when it comes to feeling but they both seem to work because my hair looks much better now (I bought both because they were dirty cheap)! I only blow dry it once a week though and no other heat tools but still for 4 months and a half without having it cut they only had to remove like 2cm of hair. not a fan of the brand but the thermique ones are amazing!

Great video and love the way you explain things! But the recommendation for Chi infra treatment confuses me. This is not a serum but a conditioner. The instructions are as followed: After shampooing the hair, apply a generous amount of CHI Infra Treatment and work into the hair evenly. Leave on hair for 2 to 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly. So after you washed out this conditioner your hair is protected against blow drying, so no need to use any other heat protectants?

So I currently have the Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray and was not going to repurchase it anyways because when my stylist used it at the salon we found that it left my blow outs feeling dryer than the Fantasia Hair Polisher Heat Protector Straightening Serum you mentioned, but I was not in love with the ingredients of the Fantasia Serum. This only confirms though that the Kenra Platinum , which is super expensive by the way, is not formulated with the ingredients you mentioned from the studies except polymers and some silicones. I was thinking of trying the Pantene Gold Series Heat Protection Spray next or the Tresseme Keratin Smooth ( although I am scared to put Keratin on my hair because I don't want to offset my protein balance to have protein overload.) I do however have a leave-in I think will cover me for blow-drying when I run out of Kenra, which is soon, and want to use it up before buying and trying the Pantene or Tresseme sprays. It is called Redken Extreme anti-snap anti-breakage leave-in treatment. I checked the ingredients and it has a blend of proteins, polyquats, silicones and ceramides. It's also relatively expensive but I have it so I will use it and if I find it to be really effective I might just catch it on a sale like I did when I got it and keep it in my stash. #useyourstash. Hair stats: Kinky, 4B/4C, fine strands, high porosity, medium density, medium length.

I always thought heat protectant was a money gimmick so I never used it until the other day I decided to use the tresemme one I purchased years ago. It made my hair so soft and smooth. I used to curl my hair like 4 times a week and bleached it 4 times in a year. Thank god my hair is coarse or else it would’ve fallen off by now with all the abuse I put it through 😖

So you've got me wondering how good or bad my heat protectant is. I use BTZ Beyond The Zone Turn Up The Heat Flat Iron Protection. Doesn't have one of the ingredients you mentioned 🤔 my hair always reverts though but I wonder about damage to the cuticle. Thoughts? Found you through African Hair God (Narada). Hey Fops, loved this vid. You crack me up 😂 🙋🏽 Question: you've helped me understand how heat destroys the protein in our strands so it totally makes sense to use extra proteins to build the hair or restore the proteins that get damaged during the heat process, but as a low porosity highly protein sensitive, should I still be trying to avoid protein in a heat protectant or nah?

Thanks DM 🥰! RE: the protein, even with low porosity protein sensitive hair you still need protein (albeit smaller ones and perhaps less frequently). I definitely agree with Kapparhotau181 that if nothing else - it would certainly be good to use in a heat protectant before blow drying. I personally wouldn’t say it’s expedient to avoid protein in a heat protectant. Which ones have you tried/do you currently use?

@@AfopeAtoyebi thanks Fops you are the hair GOAT! My absolute fav. So in answer to your question, I’ve recently changed tact with my routine. This no heat thing was doing *me* more damage than good so I’ve decided to stretch using heat, (just not too frequently) and my hair is responding soo much better. I was avoiding all protein but because I’ve decided to use heat again I recently tried The Real Protein Treatment by @GreenBeauty and it actually worked! My hair responded really well, defined my curls and left it soft! A real breakthrough for this low porosity head of hair.

I am low porosity. I use aloe as a pre poo the i rinse it off and use a deep conditioner lile aunt jackie deep condition with heat. We need heat to penetrate the hair. It leaves my hair soft. Or if tou want to go expensobe i use.kerastase green products. Strengthens my hair very powerful. Use all the steps and go for 3 and 4 for afro hair. Sulfur free which is the pink bottles 3 to 4 is so moisturizing. Got to balance strengthening once a month and moisturizing once a wee kor if you prefer every 2 weeks or more. Everyone is different. Kerastase therapiste can be use on afro hair if you know what type of porosity you have .and i use silicon mix too. I always use heat protection with the product the empress mentioned.

I use the Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum and the ingredients don't look as promising: Cyclotetrasiloxane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Cyclotrisiloxane, Parfum (Fragrance), Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, Limonene, Geraniol, Amyl Cinnamal, Citronellol For the record, I am black and have fine 3B hair that has low porosity. Usually flat irons that get up to 400F are best for me but right now I am working with my GHD platinum because it was gifted to me. It only goes to 365F so I am trying to refine my technique so I can keep this great gift

180 Pro Miracle Repair Damage Eliminator has almost all of the ingredients you mentioned! Used to be my go-to prep for heat styling. I quit using it because I thought the humectants were responsible for my hair frizzing/reverting easily after flat ironing and now I use products with no glycerin or propylene glycol. Do you know if the humectants (high on the ingredient list) would cause frizz after heat styling vs. a product with no humectants/lower concentration in the formulation?

What she failed to mention is that there are two different types of heat protectants. Thermal for hot tools and blow dry creams for blow-drying. They are not interchangeable. Depending on what type of styling you're getting you may need both or just one of them. Not all hair types can use the same kind of heat protectant. Corser hair texters need both a cream-based heat protectant (for blow drying) and a liquid one for flat ironing. Serum's aka oils don't make good heat protectants, they fry your hair. I don't care what your stylist says. That silk press may be laid but you'll eventually end up with heat damage.
