Also I just remember that in ancient times, the knights who were trained members of the nobility where not supouse to be killed. Basically in an armed conflict a when two knight face eachother whoever won the battle cmwas not allowed to kill the loser and then the loser was suposse to be returned home. However a knight was allowed to kill combatants that weren't part of the nobility, so imagine if a sub set of rules exist in this kind of war games for certeain kind of warriors

The 'aggression paradox' is simple. Because we, as individuals, regularly engage in violence, we understand it. We know the risks. We know the pain, the loss, the suffering, the shame, and the danger of false pride. We can see another being threatened and FEEL what will happen to them even if it isn't happening to us, and even if it hasn't happened yet. Because of this, we carefully consider whether serious aggression is worthwhile. It's not uncommon for fists to fly, but conflicts that could end in brain damage, loss of limb, or death need to be more carefully weighed, specifically because we KNOW what violence is.

An interesting thought. The weight of loss is not always the primary factor, witch can include the need to take revenge. Throughout modern history, America, especially around the time of World War 2 was considered the sleeping Dragon, being that they had both a large and powerful Military, but refused to go into war unless provoked. That provocation was not just the attempted capture of there land, but an attack upon there civilians and there military. They entered war, and because Japan sunk 7 boats, the U.S decided to drop two Suns on them.

Reminds me of a line inspired by the BBC’s Sherlock: “Pray that you are to be killed by an evil man. An evil man will take his time, sampling the killing like a fine wine, he will be slow and methodical enjoying every moment as if smoking a cigar. He will therefore lose himself in the enjoyment giving you the chance to escape. A good man however will take no such pleasure in his actions. If you are to be killed by a good man he will be as quick as possible, hating every moment of his actions, and you will never escape. No, pray that you are to be killed by an evil man.”

That's a Pratchetism from men at arms; If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat. They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar. So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.”

Ritualized warfare is actually fairly common throughout human history. Granted, these rules tended to only be respected between "in-groups" that respected each other, and it was total-war with more foreign groups. The Greek city-states had rules of engagement when fighting amongst each other, but completely forgot those rules when fighting the Persians.

Actually when you analize this ... It kinda makes sense that an Alien Civilization would choose this method of solving armed conflicts by using "War games" Is kinda like the Geneva Convention in a way, the Geneva Convention Rules of Wars exist with the porpouse of keeping the amount of devastion and armed conflict cam reach to "Minimun" Levels as well as to prevent a armed conflict from escalating to a point of no return. Like how is a war crime to both attack surrendering enemies and at the same time enemies that surrender can not use the good will of their adversary agaisnt them. Rules like these exist to, for instance preventing an army using tactics like faking a surrender to make an enemy lower their guard for a surprise attack, as this may result in that enemy merciless killing actual surrendering enemies in the future as a preventive want to avoid being attacked when not expecting them. For an intergalactic community compose of several alien races, is very likely that they created this "War Games" as a means to ensure that whenver two or more parties go to wars agaisnt one another the resulting conflict never escalated to a point of no return. For what can understand from this small story, Aliens have basically eliminated dispropocinated huge scale wars by creating a systems that ensures that whenever there is an armed conflict, all parties involved mantain some level of civilization and mutual respect.

Reminds me of the m’bari from Babylon 5. At first glance they seem to be one of those pacifist intellectual species, but apparently they have no off switch when it comes to violence, and nearly wiped themselves out at some point in the past. So while they are slow to anger, once they decide to throw down, they back off untill someone stops moving. Bar fights become a fight to the death, family feuds don’t end untill someone’s entire bloodline gets wiped out, and the only thing that stopped them from killing every human in the galaxy was finding out their space Jesus was a human from the future.

Humans play war all the time - most of our games are based on it, to a less or greater degree. We just don't "play war" as a nation for real stakes. Put something the nation cares about on the line (such as a colony planet instead of a nearly worthless empty planet) and we will do war for real, not for play. Although I do think it is unlikely we would have refused to play altogether - if for nothing else to test out how much of a disadvantage we actually would be in their wargame. If we could "Git Gud" and beat them at their own game, humans absolutely would "play war" with the aliens. Just depends on the odds of success and the stakes. And humans like to gamble.

As soon as I heard challenge. I knew it was not "War" but, as they said a challenge. And human being stupid humans once again go all out. I don't know why those stupid humans don't under stand a challenge. After all some wars were decided by a single combat or duel. Saved life's, time and expenses.

When facing an entity with a childish view on system acquisition, one that believes that they can purchase space rocks with lives, the smart thing to do is get out of the danger zone. We value lives, and participating in such is letting people be harassed while minding their own business, then being told to move because aliens want their land and our troops lost the battle. It's not about a single battle... these places that could become permanent and ancestral homes would be contested until universal society collapses, meaning lives lost due to a difference in ideology.

I don't see why we let them take anything in general. It's not about systems not being worth anything, they invaded our territory and we just roll over? Stories like this where we immediately give in to play by their rules always makes me angry to listen to.

The humans in this story are limiting themselves to a tiny bit of space where the rules of war make them safe. This is a dumb move in the longrun so is acting weak and abandoning collonies without fighting to keep it by their rules. They might lose but atleast they'll learn how to do it. I wouldn't call this HFY at all.

Think about it, They set a line for nobody else to cross and bought themselves time to prepare. Eventually, the galaxy would find out why we don't like the idea of treating war like a game in such a way. We became so good at it, that we eventually reflected and became disgusted at how savage, cruel, and calculated we can be when it came to hurting our enemies, and despite that, we can't help ourselves. By the time humanity reached the stars, they treat such a gamification of war as a vile insult to how precious life can be.
