Humans showed up, waged a destructive war to break your chains, freed you from having to build, grow food, and go to war for them while they defiled your children, rebuilt your worlds, showed you a better way of living, guided you to a prosperous future, then said, "Here, take your life into your own hands now. Find your purpose, for that is the greatest freedom any of us have." And your response is anger? Hatred? Bitterness? We made a mistake. It's not that we didn't help enough, it's that you're not capable of doing it. We should have left you where we found you.

Because the the people who claim that they want to "work hard, strive for success and just want to be left alone" invariably want to force their small minded and backwards ideas onto everyone else, don't realize that it's the politicians that they like that are causing the problems, and hold the door open for fascists to take over the government.

In most historic cultures, slavery was viewed as an option preferable to destitution and starvation. Only a few cultures made a practice of taking slaves by violence (many more cultures took slaves as a side effect from war, but it was rarely a MOTIVE). Far more numerous were those that bought and sold. "I'll pay your debts, feed you, clothe you, give you a room in my home, you're my property for twenty years." No, it doesn't surprise me at all that freed slaves would be ungrateful. Chances are, they were freed from having food, money, and comforts.

That is the wrong way to do it - you have to replace the slavers and give the slaves more and more freedom over generations, make them independent, let them make their own errors, make them to want to live on their own... You can't force people to want to be free and independent in a few decades. They have to want to be free on their own.
