I thought of Dunkirk, but that was a huge fleet of ships rescuing the military. Then I thought of the September 11 Boatlift. Several times as many, all of them civilians, in a fragment of the time. Beautifully read. Thanks to the author and the reader, for reminding me of how humans can come together in the face of evil.

Problems. Boat lift used existing harbour facilities which were undamaged. The harbour facilities at Dunkirk were smashed into uselessness by constant bombing, meaning the troops had to be taken off from the beach or the south mole. Next a far shorter over water trip than at Dunkirk, on faster vessels, that were NOT under constant threat of attack from enemy aircraft or surface shipping. Next the British took 340,000 troops off at Dunkirk, about 500,000 for the Boat lift, which last time I checked was NOT several times 340,000. More, yes, but not as you stated, several times more. Comparing the boat lift to Dunkirk is stupidity. The literal only similarity is the hard work put in by the rescuers, but you do not in ANY way account for the huge additional difficulties the British Evacuation fleet faced at Dunkirk. Compared to Dunkirk the Boat Lift was a relatively EASY operation..... Well executed but compared to Dunkirk it was risk free... So no, more akin to Dunkirk..... Not the Boat lift....

@@scott644 Sorry, but no. 1) 9/11 Boatlift lifted 500,000 civilians, Dunkirk lifted 340,000 soldiers. Last time I looked 500,000 was NOT several times 340,000. And before you try to argue the numbers, usually most people just quote the BRITISH troops lifted from Dunkirk, forgetting that almost as many FRENCH troops were lifted as well. 2) 9/11 Boatlift was done WITHOUT constant air attack, risk of submarine attack, or an enemy constantly attacking the perimeter. 3) The 9/11 boatlift was conducted over a FAR shorter round trip WITHOUT danger of attack on the way there or back, unlike Dunkirk. Also the average speed of the vessels used during 9/11 was faster. Meaning not only less water to cross, but on faster vessels... because you know, engine tech has advanced.... So yes, more akin to Dunkirk that the 9/11 boatlift, don't get me wrong the latter was magnificent, but it was NOT done in the face of an active enemy, while under fire. Oh, and also the Boat lift used existing harbour facilities, which the evacuation at Dunkirk could not, because they had been bombed into uselessness, so they had to use the beach and the south mole.... You can move a LOT more people if you have existing harbour facilities that allow multiple vessels to tie up alongside and receive evacuee's at a much more rapid rate than was possible at Dunkirk..

@@alganhar1 339k troops over 9 days, versus 500k in less than 9 hours. In both cases they were under constant threat of attack. In the boatlift there was encroachment of a toxic cloud. I stand by what I said.
