Well the problem with this story is" 1 the humans would have retaken earth eventually and kicked the Illum out 2 the humans likely would have destroyed the Illum hw and freed the rest of humanity from enslavement. Maybe everybody who was free wouldn't want to take out the Illum but enough would for it to happen.

Maybe, but it's implied that the most aggressive thing humans can reliably to is wait for you to die or look away. And human waves don't get you to space. And there's the implication that space slavery is better than many human lives now. If their deplorable conditions are "6 hours work per day, plenty of food, and a small apartment to yourself", how many people would jump at that today?
