Truly thorough revenge. The stars provided the mechanisms whereby the banished could hope to survive. Sending them sans stars therefore removes the protective heliosphere along with the life-giving energies of their sun. Since the humans have built a strong base there, and know where every enemy world is, they can monitor the situation to insure those worlds eventually fall. And while this qualifies as "a" genocide (multiple in fact - one for each banished planet), it's not total genocide as it gives them a chance to survive by their colonists on other worlds. The resulting war's going to be a pain however, as any being that obsessive about not allowing anything that doesn't live the way they say is proper, is going to fight and fight hard from the outset. The humans will have to wipe out their fleets and probably send a second wave (and maybe a third or even a fourth) of banished planets before they settle things completely.

Don't know about followup wars, one, seeing the universal laws broadcast directly into everything makes for a hard to deny evidence of "don't fuck about" and humans are fairly lenient if we have the biggest beating stick available, which, we have Hell itself to beat with
