Well, when i studied in zagreb, "we" had a pub like place called tolkien's house, in the upper town area, it was excellently decorated, inside, and the yard, paved with bricks and the terrace full of tree stumps with candles, it served guiness from the tap, that much i rember, it was in early to mid 90s. Personally i think zagreb had the most iconic places in that period mid 80s to mid 90s, like by far.

Thanks for the tips, I will definitely try that dish in Stari Fijaker. If I’m correct, Croatians use the word “fijaka” to the fact of doing nothing, mostly in the Dalmatian coast 😆 I mean, they love to fijaka, just to spend the afternoons in a coffee bar (delicious coffees in Croatia, by the way) doing nothing but drinking something and having a good conversation… 🇭🇷 💞
@filipbojic46333 ай бұрын
The word used in Dalmatia is usually spelled fjaka. And fijaker is an old word referring to horse drawn carriage as a means of transportation.

Great video, man! I'm glad you had fun even with your limited time! You were spot on about many things and pronounciation was pretty good! The "empty tables" part is a farmer's market where you can buy a bunch of good vegetables and fruit. Yes, there are also flowers sold, but in the lower area just before entering the main town square. The market is called "Dolac [Doh-latz]" (underneath is the meat/fish part of the market). If you see a croatian word in original that ends on -c, it's pronounced -tz. I know a lot of English speaking people have made the effort in the last 30 years to get those č/ć [tch/ch] sounds correctly, but we may fool you with a -c at the end where you now automatically go for č/ć. 😊

Hi !, Dolac , the main farmers market in Zagreh , is working till 2p.m. , Sundays till 1.p.m. Fruits, vegetables , herb teas ect. are up. In the open. Fisherie beside in a hall=" Ribarnica". Also woodware, folk clothes. In the back : flowers and veggies in the pots. Meat all sorts , nuts, sauerkraut & similar are below. Beside this are :dairy products, eggs, mushrooms, honey, pastry , breads... On the street, in front of the main entrance : flowers. The market is diminishing because of three factors : 1. new ugly shops in peripheries with free parkings, 2. corona panic- when it was closed= prices in shops had skyrocketed , 3. earthquake- when a lot of inhabitants of city center = those who are buying on central market , were moving out from their ruined houses , permanently .

I hadn't included Zagreb in my previous visit to Croatia, but I plan to visit it in the future. As for the bottle caps on beverages, the main purpose is ecological, as they fall off and end up everywhere. The only inconvenient is that it can be annoying when it touches your nose while drinking :), but the idea is not bad.

The part of the city where you stayed was actually built in the capitalist period (prior to WWII, socialism came afterwards), just a small correction. The further away you go from the city centre, the less ornaments buildings have. People often confuse this with socialist architecture, but it is actually modernism, or quasy-modernism; sometimes the buildings were designed with ornaments of historical styles, but during the construction the owners (investors) changed their minds and decided that they would rather have minimalist (modernist) facade, because it was trendy at that time (mostly late 1920s - 1930s). Great content btw, cheers!
