We lived in a condo until I retired last year. There was a water leak upstairs, and the people were out of town. The fire department punched a hole through the drywall next to the door, and reached in to unlock the door. It took all of ten seconds for them to do that. The fireman said it was faster, easier, and less costly to repair, than breaking down the door.
@steveb8555 ай бұрын
The same applies for the exterior stucco on home in the SW US. Locksmith stated it was cheaper and easier to fix the stucco after digging thru with a hammer than it was to pick the lock.

This would decidedly add to my house, but I’ve already moved that direction during the house remodel. I put solid/exterior doors with actual locking knobs and several doors have deadbolts throughout the house. This is the easiest childproof/child resistant setup I’ve seen. Any room or closet you don’t want a kid (or anyone else) in you just lock the door. Doing something about reinforcing the Sheetrock on most houses at least in certain areas would also be a good idea!

@joescott33935 ай бұрын
John, I would even go farther than that. That set up might be OK for an inside door but for an exterior door. You must have a steel door frame as you say screwed with minimum 4 inch screws every 6 inches around the frame. A steel exterior lined door with hinges welded onto the frame and the door as well as the doorricade brackets welded to the frame. There should be 2 doorricade brackets. One one third of the way up the door and one two thirds of the way up the door. Then and only then will the door never be broken down. Both front and back doors must be done and do not forget the basement door if you have one. Also bars around the basement windows. Then I might feel a little safer. I also have asbestos shingles and a powder coated steel siding. Aluminum siding dents too easily. There are no trees or bushes around my house. Only mini cedars trees that never grow more than a foot high but sort of spread. I have had them in my front yard for 14 years and they are about 14 inches high but 3 feet in diameter, plus flowers or very low growing flowering shrubs that never get higher than 1 1/2 feet and I have one gorgeous flowering shrub that will grow up to 8 feet but I prune it back to 2 feet. Don't forget lights. Bad people hate light. Automatic lighting will save on the power bill. If someone comes in my yard, it lights up brighter than the street lighting and if they go into the back yard a siren will go off. There is also a 6 foot steel fence that goes all around the 60 x 120 foot lot with concrete in the steel post holes and steel gates that lock. Yes this was very expensive but what is your life worth. If a criminal wants to rob you there is no way your will stop him. It is the small thief I am protected from. Plus I have firearms and know how to use them. God Bless Joe Scott

But you didn't describe (and feature visually) that the holders fold flat when not in use! Yes one of them was folded in the last scene, but not the other. Without you mentioning that, I can't forward your video to my wife who is ultra sensitive to stuff sticking out and looking yucky! I wish Dooraccade would furnish a black coated set of holders for the bar, that would be ideal for our dark stained door trim.

I screwed and glued 5/8" plywood to my hollow core bedroom door to add umph. It's difficult to justify more than that when the wall next to the door is just drywall. I don't have a lot of square footage so my saferoom does double duty to protect against tornado and bathroom! lol I do think that we can do alot to protect against fallout without spending a lot of money

I live in a small apartment and it's my safe apartment. I have 2 doors going outside. On each door I have the regular lock, a metal rod that props under the door knob, a metal fold over door stopper and 2 x 4s with braces. I live upstairs so I feel safe as far as the windows are concerned but I have added glass shield film so it's harder to break the windows.

I’ve never seen any door kicked as high as you have installed your bar. A ram yeah likely about that high and someone putting their shoulder into it, but the most common entry is likely kicks below the locking knob.

Do you have any suggestions for a root cellar door that opens out? I’m thinking to just try to camouflage it and hope no one sees it. Because it opens out and the hinges are on the outside I don’t know how to enforce it. You can just take the hinges off if you really want to get to me.

If there is a fire in your room, thus smoke is filling the ceiling and moving down toward the floor. You likely may be crawling on the floor to breathe. Can you see how it would work to unlock the dooricade while in a crawling position, and remove it, to escape the room?

FOR THAT PRICE YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN WITH A 2X4 AND A STEEL FLAT BAR AND BRACKETS
@steveb8555 ай бұрын
This thing needs to be fixed on the hinge side and rotate down into the lock position. No way somebody is going to line that up with those narrow slots under stress. At a minimum bevel the bracket edge a little to guide the bar into place.

I don't know. I think I could. I'd definitely run into the room and close and lock the door. You are absolutely right that it could be hard under stress. Need to practice so that muscle memory takes over.

@kevinwpatterson2 ай бұрын
Not so much a sense of security as it is buying you a few extra seconds or minutes. Many firefights where an extra 2 -3 seconds change the outcome. CQB training shows as the defender you always have the advantage. You can be anywhere in the room the aggressor only has one entry point. Dump a mag into the door waist high after the first kick.
