Found this film by accident on Netflix. I have 4 kids, varying in age at the time of 14 -21. My youngest and I started watching it from the beginning. As it was on, the other 3 kids came in one at a time and started watching. No one spoke other than, "That's the mom, that's the kid. They're afraid of the Babadook." Everyone was riveted by this movie. I loved it so much, that when given a kitten that spring, I already had his name, Babadook. Best cat I've ever had....;)

This movie doesn’t need more Babadook, because this is not a monster movie - it is a psychological thriller about a boy’s deepest, darkest fear, about the unexisting limits of the human mind, about a mother’s descent into madness, and about the line between fantasy and reality not so much as being blurred as it is altogether obliterated. Your mind fills in the gaps. Even when you can’t see it, it’s dominion over the house is palpable.

I'm not surprised that this movie is divisive, people forgot that real horror comes from drama, The Exorcist is a drama before being a horror movie, so when audiences today are used to the cheap jumpscares and cliche stories with stupid characters, and here it comes a horror movie inspired by classic horror and not cliche cheap jumpscare garbage and of course, people don't like it. If you don't like it, I totally respect your opinion, but denying the quality of this movie for me it doesn't make sense.

A lot of people love formulaic, cliched shit because they find comfort in the familiar. Other people are fucking sick of seeing the same goddamn predictable plots over and over again.

The babadook is a masterpiece!!! I'm so glad you guys gave the acknowledgment it so deserves especially that the channel did not review it. "If it's in a word, or it's in a look, you can't get rid of the Babadook" Hands me down among the all times best horror movies ever made. Great horror movies represent something human, and this movies looks at the issue of motherhood and grief and its devastating effects and manages to make it an experience of catharsis. It is a movie that will make people talk, and that's a rarity. And thank you for bringing up We Need to Talk about Kevin, which also deals with these topics that challenge the archetypal mother figure.

The Babadook scared the crap out of me and horror movies in general don't scare me. The Babadook monster itself was creepy, but watching the mother's mental breakdown unfold was genuinely frightening. Great film.

I agree, her depression and anxiety reminded me a lot of my mother, too...I love how Amelia's grief manifests itself as the Babadook and how she has to make peace with it.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying these so far, but it's clear that someone on the production end is phoning it in. The big ol' green screen in the first video and now this. Ah well, still enjoying them despite that!

I see horror movies since I was 9 (I'm 27 now) so nowadays horror movies rarely scare me, buit this one did it for me, I was making dinner for the family after watching it and I found myself shaking in the kitchen, it affected me a lot especially with the drama, my favorite and most horrifying part is when her son tells her "I know you never loved me" while she's battling the demon, her demonds. After that only the Witch has left me with the same feelings. Great series WTF :D

Wow, the whole motherhood aspect didn't affect me that much. What I thought was that the babadook represents denial of grief and everyone keeps telling Amelia that there is such a thing as "closure." This is the best anti-platitude anti-closure movie.

This was an excellent review for an excellent film. Finally a movie without predictable masculine bravado and jump scares. This is horror resulting from tragedy and the resentment of a child for being born, which results in the boy's misbehavior. Agreed that they depict anxiety better than most.

I actually have not seen this, though I've heard nothing but good things about it. It's always a little odd what will or won't drag you in. Conversely, a similar kinda low budget film called 'The Monster' with Zoe Kazan immediately gripped me. I think the more visceral conflicts - with or without gore - are more likely to drag me in for a viewing. Not all the time, just in general. Edit: Actually, I Don't think I'd really even call 'The Monster' a _horror_ film, it was a bit suspenseful and exciting, but fear was a mild breeze.

Well, this movie scared me. The Babadook is a less a typical gory, slasher, monster movie and more about our internal monsters (no not from a bad taco at a fast food place). Distortion of reality, losing a grip on what is real and what is not, is chilling.

If I ever know a director or screenplay writer who specializes in the horror genre I know exactly what challenge I'd propose to them. It's doable seeing that it has been done a few times but it's not easy. And that is to make a legit "my skin was crawling" film that's PG-13. It can be done. An automatic R rating usually is due to nudity, excessive sexual content, gore, excessive violence, and excessive bad language (cursing). This creates an enormous gray area to play with. The only film that I can think of that accomplished this and remained PG-13 was *What Lies Beneath* . I'm sure there's more and some people will scoff at the very notion that that film was scary.
@rorrt7 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of it. But there again it is quite old now. 2000. There is no question PG-13's can be scary.. For me 2 films which really liked were The Others and The Hole (Joe Dante).. And actually The Woman in Black was also a PG-13.. But in that case, the source material is so incredible! And it's really based more on the play than the book.
@standoughope7 жыл бұрын
*@rorrt* I'll check those films out, thanks! I also in no way seek to besmirch R-rated films in that genre. I've gone down that rabbit hole too. It started with Pet Cemetery, Exorcist, and IT, moved to The Shining, The Omen, The Ring, and Clockwork Orange... then came the torture porn flicks like Saw, House of 1000 Corpses, and Hostel. Next I graduated to the truly sick films like Salo, Cannibal Holocaust, A Serbian Film, Irreversible etc. I love challenging art forms as long as they're legal. =)

I love Australian movies and horror movies but wtf. I watched it with my 15 year old son and we thought it was a comedy. Special effects were hilarious at times especially the fruit slice effect on the father. The babadork has no back story and is just a mix of elements from the sixth sense and the exorcist. The funniest part was the ending where it ends up as a pet in the cellar which eats worms for some fcng reason.

I grew up on horror movies and worship them. I and some other friends who are hardcore horror fans rented The Babadook and after about 45 minutes we were so bored that we started making fun of it MYST3-style. At this point, I avoid horror movies that mainstream critics recommend because too often it's a psychological drama, NOT a horror movie. I have gotten tired of falling asleep to "horror" movies where nothing happens, but people who recommend romantic comedies are horrified at the "atmosphere." I'm part of the Fangoria/Deep Red/Joe Bob Briggs generation, I want a fun, crazy, violent, bloody horror movie, not a indie drama that plays at art houses. To me, the greatest horror movie of the last 10 years was "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil": I was actually entertained by it, the writers were not trying to sort out their psychological issues.

Ugh, this movie was predictable as all hell and the characters were annoying as shit. My most common complaint against uber-hyped movies is "style over substance" and that definitely applies to this movie. I didn't hate it but I never wanted to watch it again and I get irritated when people hail it as a masterpiece and even more irritated when those people feel the need to attack anyone that dares not like it. Pretentious, snobby, arthouse douchebags are far more horrifying than the Babadook.
