Even better, Jennifer Kent said she will never make a sequel due to it being a good story by itself. This is my favorite woman in Hollywood.

I hope Jennifer Kent uses the book sale money to make another film soon. Hell, I just hope she makes another film soon I saw this about a year ago, and some scenes are still right on the tip of my brain.

If you have felt crushing depression or the loss of someone very close to you, this movie is going to shake you to your core and if not you'll only see it in one dimension. As soon as I got into the movie I knew what it was about, and it made it not only scary but heart wrenchingly sad.

No. I went through depression and grief. still didn't like it. It started out as a horror movie (very, very scary indeed) but ended up in a woman fightingupn laughably obvious metaphor. And that mix didn't go well. I'll give it a 6.5/10. Over average, but not that masterpiece everyone thinks it is.

Not only does the Babadook represent her grief of her husband dying, but it represents the resentment she has for her son, and how that is eating away at their relationship. She blames him for her husband's death, and he isn't even grateful or understanding (at least in the beginning), he's a horrible problem child. And I LOVE that they didn't get rid of the monster at the end. Because you can't completely vanquish your negative emotions, you just have to live with them and keep them deep down and you have to learn to control them.

The creature is her PTSD from her husband's death. She finally gets her act together in the end, not letting it control her life. The last scene shows that she needs to address this in order to give her and her son a happy life.
@jBlueRunner

I think that the end implies that she snapped and ended up actually killing her son because the last words she said were happy birthday (and if you don't remember it was foreshadowed earlier). but then again those last words can also signify that she's moved on from her depression and changed but I don't know.

@RP_Williams
@RP_Williams 5 жыл бұрын
@@lockekappa500 "and scarier" - but that's just not true (at least not for film)...i know many people who won't/can't watch horror films because they'll have nightmares and won't sleep for a day or two, but i can't recall ever hearing anyone say this about any other genre of film. "its pretty obvious" - IIRC, she actually outright said something like 'we have to stay happy to keep the Babadook away' at the end...but it's often said that (allegedly real) evil spirits need/use/provoke that sort of negative energy (from their victims) to survive and grow in our physical world (and i thought that essentially the Babadook is one of those evil spirits), but if he's not an evil spirit and it's just a metaphor for depression (and it was ll just in her head) it's not scary at all...it's like 'get some therapy and some meds, lady, and everything will be fine'....it's relatively straightforward for someone to battle depression (we know how to treat this illness), but an evil demon spirit is much scarier, because wtf do you do to get rid of that? "I honestly think its genius but to each their own" - i agree it's clever (and a very well acted film), it's just not scary. I used to like this as much or more than Poltergeist (which wasn't a metaphor or anything, just pissed off ghosts), but not at all now. I need that 'supernatural' element to get me feeling scared...if the Babadook's all just in her head, i'm disappointed.

looking through these comments makes me want to clear something up. SPOILERS: the mother is the babadook, even before they read the book the son is making weapons to fight the monsters. the babadook is a hallucination the mother imagines to deny the fact she abuses her child. she used to be a writer of children's books and wrote the mr babadook book. did you think it was strange she didn't comment that her son has the mr babadook book on his shelf? that is because she wrote it and put it there. she tore it up, the next day sleeps in to 11:00 and actually put it all back together and added new pages. there are blank pages the first time they read it. when she goes into the police station she has the ink or the charcoal used to make the book on her hands. in the scene where the son pees himself near the end she has her hands like the babadook's claws, the way she kicks the door open by holding the frame and kicking it is how the babadook moves across the ceiling and she even makes the gargling sound the babadook makes over the phone. also she vomits black ink not blood. the son sort of knows it is his mum who is the babadook but also views it as a monster possessing her. she cuts the phone line so the son can't escape her not because she is disciplining him. she also sees a news report where an american mother kills her son on his seventh birthday but she's on the tv looking out a window, I think she may have actually killed her son - you do actually see him with his throat slit for just a second. at the end the son does an impossible magic trick where the dove is in the food tray, anything impossible is IMO a hallucination. I could be wrong about the dove but why else is that scene in there. other interesting things I read but did not discover myself: baba means dad in some other language (the father's death gave birth to the babadook) babadook is an anagram for "a bad book" , the dead dog is burnt black at the end and the "black dog" is an Australian saying for depression, her tooth which she pulls out is apparently a common symptom of schizophrenia, the glass in her food she put there but I don't completely understand why, she is sedating her son and perhaps he doesn't need to be but she is also keeping him awake sometimes most likely to keep her mind off the babadook. so yeah the babadook is her abusing her son because if he didn't exist her husband would never have died driving her to the hospital. sorry for the rant but this movie blew my mind!

While I agree with you on a lot of things you said, I would say more that The Babadook is part of the mother, and it represents her grief. Also, she didn't abuse her son. That was the whole point of "letting it in". If she let her grief control her, as she did at the end, she would try to hurt/kill her son, but before that she hadn't abused him.
@starark
@starark 8 жыл бұрын
+Nicholas Tunks the kid's starving so she screams at him "eat shit", she gets him sedated with prescription meds without seeing a specialist, her son already makes monster fighting weapons before the appearance of the book so before the babadook exists he is fighting monsters (the mother), an invisible force (the mother) drags him up the stairs and throws him against the wall, he pisses his pants and the mother mocks him. There's heaps of abuse.

@@confusedraccoon5327 I'm with Dick Long on this one. Despite of it being a good movie, it wasn't all that scary. At least not to people with a bit more experience you could say. I JUST watched it for the what... 3rd, time? Years between each play of course, but nevertheless it still doesn't make it for what it initially was meant to be: A horror movie. It's very well made (looking past the awful acting throughout half the movie) but that's all I can credit it for. I've seen countless of actual horror movies (Green Inferno, I Spit On Your Grave, Cannibalism, Grave Encounters, Dead Silence, As Above So Below, the Insidious saga, and many, many more... But, this? It really takes the cake (pun intended). The reason that I've watched it that 'many' times? It's untold story. People arguing left and right over what the Babadook really is (despite of us knowing that baba means father, and dook means unfinished book?) I just can't seem to give the movie it's actual meaning. That alone being a total downer, the fact that we never got to see the creature? Is what makes me hate it. Well, that, and that the only thing that seemingly dies in said... The dog. The freaking dog, that nobody cared about in the first place, because it had no story of it's own. Sorry for the long and quite frankly pointless rant of mine, I am not the master of my thoughts. -Yes, I too am schizophrenic.

@TimpsterTheDude

It was kind of cliché. & the movie spoiled itself about halfway through. It was not hard to figure out what the Babadook monster was a metaphor for, & what would happen to the mother later on in the film.
@Painocus
@Painocus 10 жыл бұрын
TimpsterTheDude "Spoiling itself about halfway through" does not equal "cliché". (if that is what you meant.) Also "spoiling" itself is not necessarily a bad thing. You don't sit down to watch/read a Greek tragedy to figure out what is going to happen at the end. It's a Greek tragedy. Everyone dies. It is the anticipation and the execution that build the suspense.
@TimpsterTheDude
@TimpsterTheDude 10 жыл бұрын
Painocus The movie was cliché, & it spoiled what would happen halway through. I did not know what to expect, & the suspense was removed when I knew after about 20 minutes what would happen. It was not "I can kind of guess what happens but I won't know" but this movie left so many tracks so early on that it ruined it for me. So unless you consider this movie a greek tragedy I'd say that yes, it did spoil itself.
@Painocus
@Painocus 10 жыл бұрын
TimpsterTheDude Why do you allow that narrative devise in Greek tragedy and not in a modern film? That being said, apart from using modern tropes and setting, the plot and it's layout is essentially something Sophocles could have written. Well, that and Sophocles would have had everything end as it did in the storybook.
@TimpsterTheDude
@TimpsterTheDude 10 жыл бұрын
Painocus This movie is not a greek tragedy. It is a psychological horror film. If they had put in the now existing genre of "greek tragedies" then fine. But it's a horror film that is supposed to create suspense of the unknown. If we know what will happen in the plot line it ruins the experience. I could care less if everybody in the film died, but don't tell that they will, it ruins the surprise.

Okay, just watched the movie so !!!!!!!!SPOILER ALERTS!!!!!!!, looked through a bunch of threads on IMDB, but none of them seemed to touch on the part of the ending that I was left wondering about: Yes the mom keeps the "monster" at bay through facing it every day by acknowledging what happened etc, but did no one pick up on the pretty heavy handed hints that it was all another dream scenario and that she had actually killed Samuel earlier? The magic trick with the dove was an impossibility, and a completely utopistic scenario. It starts off as a completely plausible reprise of what was shown earlier with him performing some vaguely impressive trick, which then escalates into complete impossible magic bullshit. Combined with Samuel bringing up the choke marks and how they don't hurt anymore after which he lies lifeless and inanimate in his mother's arms, and the overall weird vibe at the end (kid throws a perfect bullseye with the dart)... I'm pretty sure she just went completely insane, killed the kid, and resorted to living in a complete delusion. I was surprised to see everyone refer to the ending being disappointing because of the happiness of it. Thoughts?
@jlogan2228

The trick isn't impossible those dishes are made to house the birds inside ( granted catching one would be hard) the perfect bullsey could just be the mom finally let's the kid practice bc she knows it makes him happy, as for the choking it takes 10-12 minutes without oxygen for your brain to die so even if he had passed out he wouldn't have died from such a brief encounter However excellent idea with well thought out points

The Babadook became my favourite horror movie of all time. It truly is amazing, but only because it's scary, but also because the characters are complex. A very common complain about it is that the kid was too annoying, which is one of the stupidest things i ever heard! He was supposed to be annoying, because it wasn't a simple monster movie, it depicts parenthood in a very dark and relatable way, it made the whole movie feel a lot more real which makes the scares more effective. A bunch of people who clearly never had to take care of a child apparently dismissed the whole movie because of that, when in reality, kids can be THAT annoying and taking care of them can be THAT stressful, it all helped to build up the feeling of paranoia that the Babadook was lurking around, it helped to make the characters more believable, and in the end, it paid off, because we saw them overcoming those obstacles that seemed huge.

My wife and I lost our son just two hours after he was born 2 years ago. The scenes in this movie where people didn't understand her grief are exactly what it's like to live with a loss. When the mom was "too busy to workout," I've had almost that exact conversion with someone. People are consumed with themselves. They expect grieving people to "move on" because it makes them uncomfortable. They don't know what real problems are. Knowing the content, I went into this movie with some reservation. I'll never watch this again. Not only did it leave me extremely unsettled due to its great film making, but the grief of it all is just too close to home for me. Whether you chose to believe the babadook was real or just a manifestation of her insanity, the metaphor of loss, grief, and depression are the deeper meanings behind this film. The subtext was truly horrific.

I’ve just seen the film, you explained it perfectly. My mother suffers from PTSD, and the way it changes her, to do or act certain ways that isn’t a true reflection of her. I felt unsettled too, because I resonated with Samuel how his mother wouldn’t accept the Babadook, or the depression/grief. And the issue drives them away from each other. Hit close to home. Life is shit sometimes, and some people never live with the grief of seeing a loved one affected by the randomness of life. I hope you and your partner are doing well and keeping each other strong ❤️

Michael Bay has a few good films. Honsestly though, i'm pretty sure most people are aware of Michael Bay's terrible Transformers and TMNT movies, but when you look at better, good box office/blockbuster movies like Pacific Rim (or any Guillermo Del Toro movie, he's a great director) show that the general audience ARE insterested in good movies.

To be fair, the majority of the general public would rather see a movie about transforming talking robot cars fighting each other with huge explosions than watch a terrifying horror movie about a woman abusing her son... also Michael Bay has a ton of studios and money and his name backing him, where this was this director’s debut film

When I first watched the film a year ago I didn't pick up on the metaphor, so I didn't understand the hype. When I watched it the second time understanding the metaphor, it became one of the most terrifying horror films I've ever seen. It's not about a fictional monster; it's about an entity that is very real and inevitable: Grief. What a powerful and haunting film, perfectly summed up with the line, "You can't get rid of the Babadook."

Your average person isn't particularly smart. Unfortunately this is why dumb movies are in such great demand. *******SPOILERS****** I haven't read everything in here... BUT I take it as the Babadook is a representation of her unhealthy way of dealing with grief. She tried to suppress the grief of her husband's death so hard. The Babadook book warned her not to deny him, because he (that grief) is very real and will find a way in. The repaired book with her killing the dog/her son shows what happens if she lets the Babadook control her. When the boy was talking about the Babadook, he was talking about her going crazy and losing it. I assume he had seen this before because by the end of the movie, he had the Home Alone type traps set up to tie her down. At the end when her son tells her he still loves her even though she doesn't love him (and I guess her neighbor) she decides to take control. She takes control of the Babadook rather than letting it control her. She refuses to let it ruin how she interacts with her family and friends. She won't let it consume her and cause her to hurt those around her. The Babadook is relegated to the basement with her husband's possessions (basically a room of her past). She recognizes that she can't just ignore the grief, but she has to deal with it. She feeds it in a healthy way that so that she doesn't take her pain out on others (the poor dog and her son). She sends her son to wait outside while she goes downstairs until she says it's okay to come back in. She tells him one day he'll get to see the Babadook when he understands (he's too young to really cope with his father's death and understand it all I guess). This isn't really a horror movie. There is so much more to it than that. It relies more on brilliant storytelling than cheap scare tactics.

It's nice to see people appreciating this movie. It seems a lot of the best movies with the most heart and genuine stories these days go seriously underappreciated by the public. It always goes over their heads and they just say "IT'S OVERRATED OMG IT WAS SO STUPID" and it's so irritating. The Babadook is an incredibly smart, spooky movie. It doesn't deserve to be called overrated or stupid by any means. So I digress, it's just nice to see people appreciating it.

Spoiler Alert: The whole film is about overcoming grief (Mister Babadook), and not letting it consume you. After Amelia and Samuel overcome the consumption of grief, they lock it away. However, grief isn't something you can just lock away forever, it's something that you need to visit and sustain (feed) frequently. You can take the metaphor even further and say that if you did starve yourself from maintaining a certain level of grief (stop feeding the monster) then when you finally do succumb to grief it will once again be able to consume you, I think this was displayed well in the closing scene in the basement with how Amelia and Mister Babadook interacted. The first time I saw the film I thought similarly, not understanding the ending, but after watching the whole film a second and third time as a metaphor for the grieving process (myself having lost my closest friend recently) I see the film as a masterpiece, even encouraging in the way we interact with grief.

So, I understand how it feels to be him in a way. I always spoke my mind, I didn't understand, and still barely do, most social things and wondered why people didn't like me. I watched this review while I was in middle school, right after it came out, and thought that the movie sounded interesting, so I watched the trailer for it… and that was one of the worst nights of my life. All logic and reason left my mind when I tried to sleep, and I was frozen in complete and utter terror for hours in the darkness, completely certain that the Babadook was looming over me, waiting for me to make a move. Tonight, after years of nightmares from the trailer alone, I finally mustered the courage to watch the film in its entirety… and am completely mortified, awestruck, and heartbroken at the same time. This film interwove primal fear with emotional turmoil in a way I didn’t think possible. It is beautiful, it is gut wrenching, and it is terrifying. I have had a fascinating journey with this film, though I have a feeling it’s not over yet, for better or for worse! As always, thanks for introducing me to this movie Chris, despite the hours of sleep I’ve lost along the way!

Literally just got done watching this. Indescribably terrifying and I can't recall there being a single jump scare. Its just real, intense, visceral horror. Also, its none of it without reason, the drama element to the film is well thought out and adds so much to the plot. Absolutely amazing horror film, best since "You're Next" from last year

I finally got around to watching this movie today and it did not disappoint! I think it should be marketed as a psychological thriller rather than a horror movie, so people won't be let down that it's not a jump scare fest. It goes way deeper. Chris, there's a slim chance of you ever reading this, but I have known for ages to trust your opinion on horror movies and even if it took me SIX YEARS to check this one out, it was well worth the wait. Maybe an in-depth analysis for the Babadook, spoilers and all, would be fun? Anyways, THANK YOU! My mind will be working through this for a while.

I loved this film, in no small part because I myself have suffered from post partum depression. I saw parts of myself in the mother, when she was spiralling down into anger and lethargy. The great thing about this movie is that for a good portion of the film you question whether or not it is all in her head, or if she had truly been possessed by a demonic force. The part where her son told her he loved her even though he knew she didn't love him back just got me. Above all I love how they won. Hands down my favorite horror movie of the year.

If you don't want to think while watching a movie, then don't watch this film. But if you decide that you're ok doing so then you might find that it is one of the best horror movies of all time. The Babadook represents the mothers schizophrenia, and the Babadook for the child represents how his mother abuses him because she feels that it is his fault that her husband died, because he died in a car crash driving the mom to the hospital to have her son. The mother is always seeing things that aren't actually there, and it doesn't help that the child is afraid of the fictional monster, feeding into her schizophrenia. The Babadook is a fictional monster in the book. But when the mother arrived at the police station saying that someone was stalking her and her son, she had black ink all over her hands. The same ink used to write the book. At the end of the movie, The mother brings a bowl of worms to the basement to feed the Babadook. Actually, this is just a metaphor for the mothers schizophrenia, so her bringing the worms to the basement represents how she has demons in the basement and how she has to keep her schizophrenia in check.

Something that my stepdad pointed out really made sense. When the main character goes to her sister's house, there is a brief mention that she writes children's books. It doesn't further explore this side of her character at all. So why bring it up? Because she made the Babadook. Boom.

I was at the edge of my seat through the entire runtime while I was covering half of my face with a blanket. Everything about the movie was flawless. When you say things like "Not *just* a monster movie" and "checking my closet for the monster"... You have obviously missed the *entire* point of the movie. There is NO monster in this movie. There are no demons or creatures or haunted books. The entire point of the Babadook "monster" is a metaphor for pain, grief and insanity. It is not intended to be scary. It is intended to show how devastating loss can be. But anyways, I agree that this movie is great. And even though you enjoyed it, it's too bad you missed the entire point.

***** I watched the entire video. But you didn't pay attention. He establishes the fact that he considers this to be "monster movie" that actually has some sort of scary creature running around... When it clearly is not. The Babadook itself is never intended to be what makes the movie scary or disturbing, but he "hams it up" as though he's describing a monster movie. I think he does understand what the movie is, but he realizes most people are too stupid to understand what a horror movie is capable of, so he dumbs it down for his audience by talking about "the monster."

I have to say, I think if you're not someone that can delve deep into the metaphors or someone who just isn't into psychological..stuff, this movie is not for you. At all. *kind of spoilers* I just finished this movie about 15 minutes ago (i didnt watch the trailer or read anything beforehand so i had no idea what to expect) and what made me honestly "feel" the most emotions (other than the dog part, in which i ripped my headphones off) was when the mother locked all of the doors. I know it may have not been an extremely important part but it gave me a heavy feeling of isolation. I don't think I could describe the movie as scary. Unsettling? Yes. Definitely. I don't know what I loved so much about this movie. There were some emotions that really got to me, that made me feel like I could relate to them (I sound like a psychopath now, great). I'm not perfectly happy with the ending, but I'm content. A bit weirded out.. ba.. ba-ba dook dook dook? i'm done i'm sorry.

I was terrified by The Woman in Black, scared shitless by Sinister, petrified by The Conjuring... this movie did literally nothing to me, it wasn't scary in the slightest. The scariest parts where when you see The Babadook's face and that literally happened like twice and not when it would be most effective, it was boring, the kid was fucking annoying, the mum was annoying because she clearly didn't know how to raise a child properly, i was genuinely hoping they both died because they were even more unrelatable than the wife and husband in Annabelle. I wont deny the actress wasn't good, she really was, she played the shitty parent character really well, problem is with that fact i can't relate or feel sorry for a shitty parent when all this stuff is happening. Also there just isn't really much happening at all in the movie, The Babadook hardly does anything scare worthy in the movie and the mum being a psycho and trying to kill and fucking annoying little kid isn't scary either. I honestly don't know what you saw in this movie, Chris. Usually I agree with your judgement 100% but this time i just don't understand how you thought this was scary

DinoCujko horror movies are probably the hardest to review and thats why i don't like it when people review them like they're actual movies, giving definitive answers, horror movies are so subjective more than any other movie to the observer that they can't really be given definite reviews. Obviously with all movies there will be differing opinions but i think horror movies divide audiences more than any other genre, they are impossible to review correctly

I'm not a fan of horror movies, and I don't usually comment on youtube, but I think your "words exchange" (is it correct? I'm literally translating from my mother tongue) it's quite interesting! To me you both are right. Horror is a genre that really has to resonate with your inner soul, that's why it's so much subjective to evaluate. To me first thing first, if someone tells you "This movie is scary", probably you will watch it with so much anticipation, that in the end it won't be certainly as much scary as your friend told you. The scariest movie I've seen, all were a "surprise", as King said with better words, the worst fear is the one you don't even know till the moment it's presented in front of you. Second and last thing, sometimes it's just what you "feel" beyond the movie which scares you the most. Maybe in this kind of familiar struggle, a person with a paste even only borderline similar, resonate better and has something forgotten coming back to haunt him, and that's what makes it scary. So Stuckmann? Want you to share something horrible in your family past?

SPOILER!!!!! The mom didn't know how to raise the kid because SHE RESENTED THE KID. She physically hated him. How can you as a parent, raised, take care, loved your child when deep down inside she blamed him for your husband accident. That is what scary about this movie, the relation between a kid (who needed and loved his mother) with a mother that hated his gut. If you are a parent that is something to think about. Am I treating my children right? that's the question I had when I leave the theater. The scary is not the monster.

SPOILERS. The mother, a children's author, actually was the one who wrote the scary book and it looked as though she was vomiting black ink at one point in the movie. I think it had started out as an innocent children's book but took a turn for the worse in her grief. Did she unconsciously start drinking the ink either because she wanted to die or was she made to drink the ink under psychic attack from her husband wanting her to die? My take was that the energy of her husband dying a sudden high impact gory death and the wife witnessing it and them almost immediately giving birth (painful and gory) created a high psychic energy between them where the husband's energetic spirit and the wife/mother's energetic spirit wanted the whole family to be together again...in death, on the other side. However the wife/mother was torn by wanting to protect her child's life while, at the same time, wanting him to be with her on the other side with the husband. There are other stickimg out bits I can't reconcile with this neat little package though. Maybe it has been deliberately constructed so we will go endlessly round and round uselessly trying to fit it all into one sensible whole neat package in vain.

I'm astounded at the amount of praise this is getting. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it was not one of the best movies I've seen. I really dug the first half with the depression and her relationship with her son. I also thought the Babadook was quite terrifying. That said, once it made it to the climax, the whole thing was ambiguous. The Babadook just wasn't scary any more. It made no sense and was almost cartoonish. I liked the suspense at the beginning but was never scared by the climax. That says something because I get scared fairly easily. Heck, even the Visit scared me more. It also didn't help that I watched The Thing last week because that movie truly horrified me.

+sivad parks You've got to look past the scariness (or lack thereof) of this movie! The film is about grief, and the climax of the film is the mother getting on top of her grief, finally accepting what happened to her husband and not letting the grief overcome her (the final scene).
