I've grown peace lilly in a bathroom for years. When I moved it outside, it grew more lush and beautiful than the 2 years in the bathroom. The bathroom has a window, too. I'd suggest giving it a break outdoors during the warmer months. ❤😂

Thank you so much for your video. I work in a big box store that sells a ton of houseplants. Unfortunately they arrived with a tag that only says houseplant. So I really appreciate you putting the actual name of the plants on your screen. Also you're the only video I've ever seen that covers air plants. They are super popular. Unfortunately they are very easy to kill. I really appreciate you giving those helpful tips on how to water them. I was wondering are air plants temperature sensitive? We get several different kinds of air plants in but they are right next to the doors that go outside that continuously open during the night for the freight crew. Do you have another video that shows the different kinds of air plants? Some of these are plants come super glued to a piece of wood or glass, if you try and pull a live plant off will you kill it? I ask this because sometimes people just want the plant and not the stupid thing it's glued onto.

Like you mentioned, i have a Peperomia scandens 'Variegata' in there that is loving its spot and I find myself trimming it so it doesn't cover up my sink mirror! I want to get a watermelon peperomia as well now that I know it'll probably love it. Also, I love how you mounted your birds nest fern! I have a small bathroom on the north side of the house; it has no windows, only a skylight over the tub, and a 4" wide shelf around three sides. I have a couple of large-leaved Fittonias that have been pretty happy for several years, and I just recently added a fluffy ruffles fern that has been growing like gangbusters and a button fern that's also doing well. I have my fingers crossed everyone will be okay for our dark winter. That Ctenanthe is *gorgeous*; if I can find a small pot of it, I think I'll give it a go. Thanks for the recommendations!

Thanks. Not the usual picks I see for bathrooms. I have that fishbone ctenanthe & a grey star ctenanthe. Not fussy at all. Grow well in low lighting my living room and are happy with tap water. I have a window in my bathroom and keep variegated English ivy. It does fine, but doesn't grow massively fast as it only gets direct sunlight for about 15 minutes in the afternoon. I had a pilea cadierei in the bathroom and it did really well over autumn winter and doubled in size. However, when summer hit (am in Southern hemisphere), it got brown tips that spread quickly and the plant died. No idea why. So for now, just the ivy.

I'd been using tap water that sat overnight on my plants and just this week switched to distilled water. I keep all of my calathea in my bathroom. My bathroom has one frosted window. My apartment generally gets really good light, the bathroom is the only room with one window (all other rooms have 2 windows), and it's the only frosted one. I find calathea do better with lower light than ferns, or ctenanthe or stromanthe, etc.... (ferns are my favorite plants, followed closely by prayer plants!) And I can turn the hot shower on for them when I am home to give them some hot steam humidity. For ferns, hot shower humidity is sometimes too much because it's not as controlled. Prayer plants just need high humidity all the time, ferns need humidity too, but not so much (cooler forests vs. hotter more humid jungles). I consider bathroom plants more high humidity plants than low light, but it depends on your bathroom. I would recommend calathea over ferns for low light bathrooms, mainly for the high humidity needs, if you remember to turn a hot shower on for them. My ctenanthe, stromanthe, and maranta are fine with higher light, if I mist them or have a humidifier, so i just keep them father away from a window.

Question for you Nick, when you were talking about the pepperomia and the new bigger leaf, taller plant you added to its pot, is that a Pilea aka The Aluminum Plant? I recently purchased 2 huge Pileas from a big box store and of course they only said "Foliage" on the tag. I knew they were Pileas and from my searching i know the green with silver is referred to as the Aluminum Plant, but I also got a much darker, purple type. I don't know much about the these plants especially the darker one and I can't find any videos for it. Can you give me any care advice for these types of Pileas or even actual names so I can research them? They are each in 8in hanging plastic pots and I got them for $6 each. Please help if you can.

I got 2 so far and they are putting out new growth like crazy. Thank you for this informative video on plants that do well in the bathroom. Currently, I have an east facing window in my bathroom but it has clouded ? Glass. I see your window is clear glass. I have shied away from putting any plants in there b/c of the glass in the window. Am I too cautious? I have air plants in a south facing window. I soak mine for an hour (every 3 weeks) in a bowl with tap water set out for 24 hours. I let them dry upside down for 24 hours before putting them back in their homes. The key is drying them well so they don’t rot. My ionanthas are starting to pup (only after 4 years, HA!). I’ll try a birds nest fern in my bathroom. Good experiment. 🤓

Yesssss on the air plants being sprayed and not soaked! At every nursery I've bought them they stress that I soak them for 30 min to an hour once a week . Everyone on youtube suggests the same so needless to say I killed my first 10 or 12. I finally started just misting them and BOOM success! I have a large collection now and have for over a year. When I soaked them I laid them upside down to dry on a lint free towel overnight and shook them out everytime I walked by so I did everything I was supposed to do. I think because I live in a very humid area of Alabama that soaking was just to much . Thank you for sharing that information so maybe people won't be so intimidated by them. As for me I was determined to figure out the correct care because I can't stand for a plant to whoop me so I keep trying until I figure out the plant. Thankfully I bought the little $3 -$6 dollar ones until I figured the air plants out haha Have a great weekend🌱🌿🌱🌿🌱

How often do you water the fern on the wood blank? And how cold does your bathroom get? How low would you say ferns can be re temp?
@NickPileggiPlants
@NickPileggiPlants 4 жыл бұрын
Every 4 or 5 days. And my bathroom gets no lower than 65 usually. Most ferns could probably handle it pretty cool. Ballpark 45-50 degrees but I’d have to do more research to say for sure

Love your videos! I was wondering if you have a background in studying botany or plant biology. You seem so knowledgeable and you pronounce the scientific names like they're nothing.

I do not! It has just been a hobby-turned-career over the past 5 or so years. Not really that long at all! I simply learn from experience and research ☺️🌿

Under the leaves of the second fern you were showing, I saw many round bumps. I've seen that on other plants as well as under the leaves of flower arrangements. Are those bumps some sort of bugs eggs? Would we not want to purchase plants with something like that under the leaves?

Debra Smith those are spore cases. It's how the ferns reproduce

@@debrasmith2443 You're welcome! The biology of ferns is fascinating. They are incredibly ancient plants, predating the evolution of seeds and flowers.

The main thing I struggle with in my bathroom is it being cold. My bathroom is bright but is also the coldest room in my house and lots of plants don't like it in there because of that. Any suggestions with that in mind?

I actually find my bathroom to be cold, and only humid immediately after a shower. Not many plants are happy in there. My kitchen is more humid than my bathroom.

I have found that the easiest way to kill an air plant is to soak it. I have Spanish moss, a table fern, a large air plant and a maidenhair fern in my bathroom window.
