Hi Lisa, thank you for this video. I've had my pressure cooker (not specifically Instant Pot) for a year & I've used it maybe two times. After watching your video, today (01-17-2020) I called the manufacturer to get replacement seals for the lid. They said my model pressure cooker is being discontinued. I bought two replacement seals. I'm so glad you included that tip. I forgot to order a liner. I'll do that now. Thank you for all of your tips.

Shop your relatives for old pressure cooker accessories (they too sold the trivets, and steamer baskets with the handles). I would not use anything INSIDE (under pressure) that has silikon or plastic. The steam gets hotter than boiling point and there is pressure, I would also not brew my coffee or tee in a plastic pan. Sturdy glass, ceramic, and stainless steel, or enamel pots (if they are not scratched) are fine. In the Chinese cuisine they use bamboo baskets but only for steaming (not under pressure and with the higher temperatures). As for an improvised handle, I would avoid aluminium foil. If need be a thin stripe of cotton or some kitchen yarn (a fabric stripe well rinsed, so it will not have any residue from washing powder). It will soak up some of the juices, but if the stripe is thin it will not be too much. Or any kitchen utensil from stainless steel (completey) that you could bend). And you could as well get started with a pressure cooker. have a metal pot (camping pot maybe) put it inside your pressure cooker, and maybe go at the lower temperature. I never liked the meat when it was directly in the pressucre cooker pot, the fibres were kind of coarse - more than when you simmered it on the stove - which is the milder cooking method (yes it got soft, but the high heat also "denatures" the proteins and fibers). But when taking it easy on the steam and giving it time it might work niceley. And the boiling water does not directly impact the meat if it is in the pot and not directly in the pressure cooker (or instapot). The heat should be well to regulate especially on an electric stove. And natural pressure decrease (by cooling down), it is the milder method.

Best IP accessories: 1) silicone one way steam diverted. Has to be one way only, to be effective. 2) mesh strainer basket 3). IP lids for storing leftovers. Most useless: pot grippers, too many extra gaskets ( food smells never transfer from one dish to another), but having an extra on hand may come in handy, if one breaks. But they seem very durable. Still haven’t used my PIP double broiler. Meat will always take longer to cook than side dishes.,,can’t understand combining them at the same cooking time. Veggies would always overcook with meat in the pot. Good point on the kits! Best to but a la carte! True that! Buy as you go, cuz you may already have a good substitute. One more perfect accessory; Get the biggest Pyrex bowl which will easily fit in your IP. For an 8qt IP, 7 cup bowl is biggest you can get. I cook and store oatmeal all the time and there’s no pot to scrub! Like your Ekovana cheesecake pan. I’ve made one awesome cheesecake, but use gf premodern crust and didn’t need my rubber/glass cheesecake pan. Your’s looks much more versatile...

Great to hear that word 'frugal', Lisa. Being similarly minded, I choose NPR (no pressure release) timings for hard boiled eggs, economising on cooking time and maximising use of input energy. If using dried chickpeas, I soak them overnight, rinse, then cook in fresh water for just _5 minutes plus full NPR,_ to save power and get better texture and taste than with non-soak, longer-cook IP methods. Add salt plus good olive oil or melted butter... _so_ much better than canned!

The pot lifter is great, and I've never had to use a sling. I bought extra rings, but always wash the original ring and lid in the dishwasher and have never had any smells. Another item I bought and have stopped using is a steam director. I wanted to aim my steam at my stove's vent hood, but I don't find it makes much difference. I bought a pot in pot set and liked that it had a lid so I didn't have to wrap it in foil to prevent condensation. I really like the egg bite thing better than trying to balance separate cups, and I can only get two ramekins to fit in my IP, so they aren't very handy for me. I still find a lot of people intimidated by their Instant Pots, so thanks for making it more approachable.

I'm terrified by mine but am working hard at learning to use it while we are at home. I'm a long haul trucker and I am going to use mine for cooking healthier meals on the road. I was going to use the silicone muffin cups for my egg bites but now I will get the egg bite mold instead. I've seen quite a few posts saying that they aren't stable enough. Have you tried using coffee mugs for making your egg bites in?
@lynnbehnke69104 жыл бұрын
@@byteangelxi9178 I never even considered coffee mugs. The egg bites are kind of small and silicone is easier to wash. Hmmm... for other things though... Thanks for the idea.

Best advice I found in your video is NOT to buy any accessories until people have actually used their Instant Pot first and discover their habits with this awesome kitchen appliance. I definitely got excited and bought a bunch of accessories when I first ordered my Instant Pot and of course there are still some I have yet to use.

I have 2 IP one old Lux 6L and one Ultra 6L. The most used accessory I have is the glass lid. I use it for storage after cooking a soup or a stew. I need that lid to store it in the fridge. I also have a second pot, bought since the older LUX.and I have several sealing rings. I don't need the cheesecake insert as I almost hate cheesecakes. It was my big disappointment when moving in Canada. Cakes are quite different in Europe. I love cheese and most cakes, but not the American cheesecake. And for steam, I have one Lekue steamer for MW. It's 2 min in the MW for broccoli, 3 min for carrots, 7 min for potatoes. That's much quicker that IP. But with the Ultra I like boiling eggs in it on low pressure. Lux has only high pressure and I was afraid to do eggs in it. For eggs I use the insert that came with the IP. I still haven't tried the yogurt menu. I am doing kefir using some kefir grains and I have trouble drinking so muck kefir /day.

Thank you soo much for being honest about the need for accessories! The advice you gave is AWESOME, very practical and honest. I love that you stated you aren't being paid for your advice or receiving free items. It is so hard to determine if someone who is getting free items or being paid for their feedback is truly giving their honest opinion. I truly appreciate your step by step instructions and explanations in all your videos as well. I just received my Instant Pot for Christmas and am excited to use it. After watching your beginner, cleaning, 26 tips and tricks, and accessory videos, I feel like I am in a good position to get started!

You can use the cheesecake pan for pastry bottom pork cake (kinda meat-loaf, kinda pork bun but with lots of pre-cooked veggies in it) and it should work fine for actual shepherd/cottage pies that aren't all runny.

In addition to the mesh steamer basket I have a stainless steel one that fills the full capacity of the liner (aside from short trivet-style feet). It holds more food. Thanks for the vid.☺️

Thanks! You just saved me $25. I had a lid in my Amazon cart. Checked my cabinet and there's one there that fits! Decided to skip the silicon lid for now too, since I can use plastic wrap. But I think I'll get the steamer because my wife steams veggies all the time.

Great video! And EXCELLENT advise...use the pressure cooker awhile before buying goodies. I hate excess, too. I'd rather use something that I already have that works.

Thanks for the video. I was going to buy an 'accessory kit' and the magnet timetables, and now realize I need to learn how to COOK w/the IP, first! THEN I can decide what "I" need. Much appreciated!

I just started learning how to cook a few months ago after getting married and moving away from my parents. I put an IP on our registry as I had seen them in a few homes I tutored at. I had no idea how amazingly useful it would be as I slowly learned how to cook the basics like raw chicken and hamburger helper. Now I’m making a new recipe almost every other week and love having friends over for dinner. The only accessory I got was a glass lid because I enjoy seeing my “creations” when slow cooking. A few of these look really useful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining everything!! I love that you are frugal and wanting to get the best “bang for your buck”. I spend time researching almost every purchase first too. Also, your voice is so cute and sweet and I would so love to learn more cooking from you. God bless!

I picked up an IP Max on FB marketplace a couple weeks ago for $40, it didn’t come with the accessories, so I’ve been researching accessories, I think I can get away with just the steamer baskets and a trivet, I’m also all about pure functionality.

I agree with most of your recommendations, but the flat whisk, though useful, is not imperative. A wooden flat-ended spatula works just as well and it only costs $1.00 - if you find one in a set of various sizes of wooden spoons, it will probably cost les than that, and you can be pretty sure you’ll use all of the utensils. I also have two sizes of stainless steel ballon whisks, and I find the skinny one works in every pot and pan I own. It’s great for deglazing an iron skillet or for whipping eggs in a medium-sized work bowl. I use both of them constantly in my kitchen, so I consider them imperative. I always think of Alton Brown (FoodNetwork.com) when considering purchasing some new purportedly necessary item for my kitchen (don’t trust advertisements!). He ridiculed “uni-tasters” constantly. Consider this: If you can’t use the item for more than one function, don’t buy it. You’ll be glad you didn’t need to find a place to store it!

I have the steamer basket you can get for the 3qt, use in 6 as well, I have that one, there is a better one that I really like it’s all stainless with holes, I have this one as well for my 3qt, use in 6, hint, in my 3 qt I use no basket just the pot, put full bag of broccoli in the pot FROZEN broccoli, no water, turn on IP , NO MINUTES, I let it NR for 10 minutes release pressure Works great, been doing it this way for a couple years with no problem, the frozen broccoli when it thaws in your pot is all the IP needs on zero minutes, experiment how you like the texture of your broccoli, 1 min, 2 min, that would be your max.

Thank you for your video. I have 2 insta pots. One ultra and the other duo evo plus for sous vid ing. Both 8 quarts . I just love cooking in them. Makes sense. Takes a bit to get change in your cooking habits with stews and 🌶. It’s amassing. Thank you again. I have done my right choices in accessories. Common sense. Have a great Holliday in these times. Hats off to you! T. Bell. Ontario, Canada. 👍👍👍

Instant pot sells their own 8 piece accessory kit. How do you feel about that? I understand the aftermarket accessory kits from people just trying to make a buck are not good but directly from Instant Pot has to be good right?

Good sound advice . . . My husband wanted the instant pot a few years back . . . I am the primary cook and did not want another small kitchen appliance that I thought wouldn’t be used after the initial “wow, I’ve got an Instant Pot” wore off. Two years later it had only been used for seasonal soups and an occasional roast, which I was happy with. Life change required traveling away from home 3 to 6 months at a time in our “New Used” RV essentially home away from home. The Instant Pot was recommended by other RVer’s, allows outside cooking, eliminates heating up the inside of your RV in the warmer months and inside cooking smells that linger longer than desired. Since we owned one we brought it along and boy oh boy did it do the job . . . Looking forward to a couple of new accessories since only using the basic tools included in box plus now I know exactly what is needed according to our meal Preferences. I will be reading more on your blog and viewing more of your videos. Thank you for sharing your honest experiences, and recommendations. All the best my friend!

I ordered an accessory kit with my 3 quart IP. Everything in it was so cheesy - and one thing that was cheesiest was the cheesecake pan! The springform pan, which is what I mostly wanted, was so small - 5 inches - enough for cheesecake for two. And it just looked like it was going to rust out. The tongs were thin and flimsy, I couldn’t see the point in the silicon pot holders or the egg rack. But it looked like a practical thing. Turns out it wasn’t so much. I sent it back and purchased separately the things I did want (yes, including an IP branded glass top and a nonstick liner. Individually cost a little more, but the quality was better. Happy for Amazon‘s return policy!

I am impressed with your choices and reason for them but I did not see the Non-Stick Inner mentioned. I use my IP mostly for Slow Cooking and the Non-Stick Pot has nicely rounded corners at the bottom. btw there are other Pressure Cookers available and all seem to be of a similar (if not the same) size (diameter) as the IP so those accessories are pretty universal. I even used the Trivet Basket of my 40+ year old Stove Top, Prestige High Dome Pressure Cooker in the IP, but that Steamer Basket is better,. Excellent presentation.
