*A quiet **Generater.Systems** , love the dual fuel capabilities, camper is 50 amp but the adapter helps and found it still handles the load. Haven't taken a camping trip yet, that's in a couple of weeks. Will see how well it does over a long weekend.*

What about the construction generator used in the first video? Just as someone already alluded to, for air flow, you must have a inlet opposite the fan. The fan should be sucking the hot air out while fresh air is sucked into the box and around the generator. Good attempt as many of us diyer have attempted to quiet the beasts. Maybe one hybred design using everyone's ideas will be the answer. Keep trying! The perfect quiet box has yet to be made.

2 things, first you did not use the same generator as in part 2. Secondly, there needs to be exhaust holes for the air flow of the fan to effectively keep the generator cool. Without the exit air flow the fan is keeping hot/warm air flowing at itself, which only gets hotter the longer the generator runs. This can also overheat and stress the fan. Making a baffled air exhaust will keep the noise down, sound cannot travel around corners but air can.

We have used the kzbin.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

This is a good idea just keep in mind the generator used prior was a predator brand which is much louder than the one you are using here. Other than that anything used to reduce generator noise with no air restrictions is a great idea. :)

One thing when you made the quiet box you had what looked to be a Predator standard generator louder then the inverter you used in this video we’re talking standard generator around 78 decibels and inverters are around 56 decibels. Another important item you need a vent to flow air through so the fan can pull the heat out while cross ventilation.

Internet search reveals that GoBoard is Johns Manville’s new ultra-lightweight waterproof tile backerboard. The maker looked to its polyisocyanurate commercial roofing panels as the basis for the new product, which is lighter than cement board and can be installed in residential and light-commercial tile applications. GoBoard can be scored and cut on-site with a utility knife, and only needs to be sealed at the joints and fastener locations upon installation. Panels are priced between $25 and $28. Can't find anyone here in BC Canada that has heard of it. Looks like a great light building choice. The spec sheet I found was dated 07/2017, so must be very new.

I love the design the fan may have been better placed on the top to direct the noise escaping from the fan upwards just a suggestion and the same with the exhaust pipe you could have put an elbow on it and vented the exhaust upwards to reduce the noise as well. One more alteration that may be helpful as well would be to change the fan type to one of those little 20$ two way vent fans the have at wallmart to cool the box better
@ajam4u
@ajam4u 5 жыл бұрын
This is better than the quite box without a fan. But, there are still problems with this design. The fan should be an exhaust fan, pulling the hot air out and the cool air in. Although, this not as important as the next problem. You can still keep it as an air pushing design. Second problem, the air intake should be the same square inches as the fan hole. You are trying to push a large volume of air out through a little tiny hole. Very little of the outside air is getting inside the box. It's not fully ventilated, you are pushing around hot air within the box. You need a bigger hole to get the hot air out. Side note: When the US killed Usama Bin Laden, they landed a helicopter inside a walled compound. But, they couldn't take off because the wall was preventing enough air flow to lift the helicopter up. This is the same concept with a tiny hole on this design. It is preventing enough air flow. It's like trying to run a marathon breathing through a straw. This is also hard on the fan motor. This will shorten the fans expected life-span. Third, it needs to be opposite the fan so the air flows across the generator. And for the engine exhaust, it's some distance from that same tiny hole. On your previous video you had a different generator where you attached an extension pipe on the muffler exhaust. You need to do the same with this generator to get the hot air and the carbon monoxide, CO2 out. There is now less oxygen within the box for the carb to take in. It's not running as efficiently as it could be.

Excellent job works great at reducing the sound. Plus it provides a protective cover to keep the weather off of your generator.
@greggarrot8132
@greggarrot8132 4 жыл бұрын
I would use a 12-volt Automotive radiator or oil cooler fan for ventilation if your generator has a 12 volt power Supply because they're cheap very efficient way more CFM then a regular fan use little power weather resistant. I personally put a baffle wall a little bigger then the fan with air gaps on each side between the generator and the fan so sound won't travel directly out the fan it hits the baffle wall first and did the same with the fresh air Inlet .

Wow! Its a magic box! Simply put box over generator....and presto!!! Generator gets smaller! Joking aside, even though myself and most everyone else joked about your box, I applaud you on your efforts of at least "trying". Better than my attempt (which was zero) and probably most everyone else. My father taught me to "at least try" as it is better than not doing anything.

You could defeat most of your alterations simply by making the box Bigger. Just add a small vent to allow some air flow. You don't need much. To make the box quieter still, you can glue inside some sound proof studio foam. Half inch 12x12 squares will do. If you want the cheap version, just glue in some styrofoam egg crate carton for good sound diffusion. You can also make your own sound suppressor (muffler) from an old oil filter to attach to the exhaust as well. Most of these things won't change the overall weight at all. Alot of options!
@rjostusa

Two ways to handle noise: deflect or absorb. Hard sidewalls of your box interior reflect sound waves, so they come out of any opening with force. Analogy of sound waves: like a bucket full of water; Small hole = stream shoots far. Large hole = more water but less force. Use reflecting or absorbing material for additional control. Bose figured out amplification. You're doing the opposite in reduction of the wave! Ever see egg-crate material in a sound recording booth? Both absorbing and diffusing the sound wave. Good luck!

Sound travels in a straight line, so you can add a second overlapping "roof" over the fan with some absorptive material on the underside to prevent sound from blasting out the fan grille. You want to use lightly compressed fiberglass like a car under hood absorber is made from.

That's better than version 1 but the fan doesn't actually do a lot because there's no exhaust port. Have you ever put your hand over the air intake on a hair dryer? Same thing. You gotta allow the air to get out of the box as once the fan has created positive air pressure inside the box to the extent that the fan can push there's no more air movement other than that small hole for the cables. Port the box!

Even with that fan it's a fire hazard. You need to dispel the hot air and draw cool fresh air. You need a intake and outlet. It's likely that you are overheating your generator and evaporating the gasoline. Gasoline fumes are extremely flammable. Even with this fan you have created a dangerous situation. If you're lucky the generator will overheat and suffer serious mechanical failure before the evaporated gasoline fumes ignite. I would mount a covered vent fan on the the top of the box to draw the hot air out and put a louvered vent on the side nearest the air filter.

A more efficient design is to suck air out rather than blowing air in to hit the engine. You want to suck out hot air which will result in pulling in cold air. But you need an air duct on the other side to accomplish this good air flow. Otherwise your fan will be straining to push/pull small amounts of air as the pressure increases inside but there's no way for air to come in; the higher the pressure gets, the less air will be pushed/pulled. It may run without an opposing air duct but without this the life of your generator will be greatly reduced. Otherwise, good job and good design. That assumes the boarding is fire-proof and won't burn up. Drywall is good for that.

@@LandbergTileTV Oh I forgot, there's another product called Safe and Sound sound proofing that's fireproof. Also, having 2 fans would be optimal. One sucks hot air off the top, one pulls in cold air from the bottom (not in line of sight) so you maximize the air flow without dead space.

Unless you draw out the hot air with a fan exhausting, you are really just pissing in the wind....... ;-)

You just created a convection oven. If you are going have the fan blowing in, you need a grille to let hot air out. Better to have the fan blowing hot air out and a grille opposite to let fresh cool air into the box. Fan doesn't even have to be that large, just need the fresh air grille large enough for unrestricted flow. I would build a platform to support the generator that the box can fit over. Use fiberglass insulation to deaden the sound going toward the ground. Having the generator on hard pavement only amplifies the noise and resonance.

I don’t have any practical experience, I confess, but intuitively this isn’t going to work. You can tell me that it’s works flawlessly but sorry I cant believe it. The muffling is created by the original thick-walled box that essentially completely encloses the generator. Of course a fan was added and so was a giant hole in the box. And another commenter is correct that the hole was for inflow and there was nothing for outflow. Not to mention the fact that when you need the generator, you need electricity and with the fan, you wasted 200-300 watts powering the fan. Nope....

Good luck! I've made numerous enclosures for various types of generators. Your carb is only getting hot air. More gas consumption and higher running temp. Your generator won't last long. For occassional use, this will work I guess but a lot of effort for occasional. You had to add a fan because it was choking and stalling then engine 😉. You can just lean plywood against it to get that quiet. If you can achieve 45 decibels or less at 10 ft, we'll be impressed.
