I agree make the pile but not all together. Separate pants, dresses, shirts... it’s more organized in a way that won’t be overwhelming . I need to see what I have in the same category. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Folding so that my clothing is stored vertically in my drawers. It is easier for me to ID what I may not be wearing as often, and to find a particular item when I do want to wear it.

I did everything at once, and let me tell you, after doing it piecemeal for years, seeing that pile of clothes helped me change my attitude towards new purchases, and also helped me realize I need way less clothing. Regarding sparking joy vs would I buy it again? I feel they're very similar concepts used in determining the personal value of an item, just different wording. Would I buy again can also trigger people to not let go because they don't want to spend $$ on a similar item, so they'd better just hold onto this one. However, if something doesn't spark joy, meh, let it go and let it bring joy to someone else, and I'll be more conscious of why I didn't like that item and choose more carefully next time.

I changed it "brings me joy" to "do I love it"? If I do, I keep it, if it's "meh" it's going away. Well you don't do that with things you absolutely need, like socks or underwear... lol...

Actually that pile works for me because first, I don't have that many clothes, second, I need to see everything at a glance for purging purposes and third, helps me to gauge how is my clothing spending going.

It took me 7 years to get into my grown son’s bedroom to turn it into my craft room! After months of therapy, I finally stepped in and spent only 10 minutes a day throwing out things I knew were trash. It took me 2 years to gut it, strip wallpaper, paint, get furniture, and decorate. But I’m still working on organizing! Well, one day at a time! I’ll get it!

I believe the idea of pulling everything out is to prove that you have too much. You will stop feeling like you don't have enough and will see the need to purge. Maybe this impact is what helps avoid the rebound.

I think I first saw this video and a couple of others when I started following you on KZbin. Your suggestion of letting go started the process but I was resistant to letting go of memories. I ran across Marie Kondo a couple of months ago on Netflix and have been organizing my dresser drawers and closet using her method. I am actually impressed with the progress I am making in this ongoing process. I think her idea of saying "Thank you" to each item and saying goodbye to the item helped me to start letting go. Funny how our minds work!

I couldn’t believe my ears when you began talking about Marie Kondo’s method for dealing with closets. I had just been through this ordeal 3 days ago when my precious daughter came for a visit, and announced we were going to declutter my closet. I begged and pleaded for us to do something else, but she stood firm. She was going to do it, and my job was to tell her if it gave me “joy”. We began working at 1:00 on Sunday, and with only an hour break to eat supper and watch the season premier of “Game of Thrones”, we got through all the hanging clothes, shoes, under garments, pajamas, and started on the floor to ceiling shelves, when I called a halt at midnight. I have always preferred to store things vertically, but never imagined doing it with clothes. What a life-changer. Now I have 2 weeks to watch Marie on Netflix, Clutter Fairy on KZbin, and read, read, read. She is eyeing her Father’s closet next, I hope.

I am so happy to find someone that feels the same way about the Marie Kondo method. I do think the concept is good, but if you are drowning in clutter then you are already likely to be feeling overwhelmed. Piling a huge pile of things in one space certainly wouldn’t make me feel better. I find your videos to be inspiring. Your video makes so much sense. Like how you generously refer to other Organizers, so unselfish and refreshing. I watched one show on KonMari, and was done, I found it silly. I have so much "joy" in my house we almost cannot move. My joy now is tossing stuff. Organizing is ongoing, not a one time thing. And Blessing inanimate objects like other comments said, no way. Get real. Biggest problem, two life long Genealogist living in the same square feet, you can imagine the books, files, computers, tech items, reference materials. Is there an organizer for the Genealogy Disease?

I have much more 'joy', now that I've gotten rid of my excess joy! Marie Kondo's book worked well for me. I agree with you about the rebounding. It happens even if you're following the KonMari method. Decluttering, for me, is an ongoing process and something I revisit from time to time...purging and donating the things that no longer spark joy...which can fade over time.

This was refreshing. You are the first person I’ve heard voice any concern or differences with the Marie Kondo method. I agree, she has some really good tips. I won’t use two tips - 1. the ONLY keep it if it sparks Joy. What if it sparks necessity? Not everything I owns sparks Joy, but everything I own serves it’s purpose and sometimes that purpose is to simply enjoy it. 2. The other thing that I refuse to use is saying thank you to inanimate objects. I completely agree with being thankful for the things we have been blessed with even as we are deciding to let them go. However, a thing is a thing and, for me, thanking a thing elevates it beyond what it is. Instead, I like to encourage thankfulness by focusing on being grateful for the person who gave it to me, the person who designed it or created it or invented it. I also like to remember to thank God for His provision of the item. These are things that work for me and I know it is not what may work for others, that’s okay. Just a few thoughts, no judgement, may each of us glean the gems we can from others and let the things that don’t work for us personally go.

I think the shock value of all-at-once is vital for some people, especially visual types. But most of us can't/won't do that because of time, space, or physical reasons. One can always do subcategories, then collective after the initial shrinkage if it's still needed. Great review of the Konmari method, and very fair.

Hi Norrine, 👋🏼 I agree with you. I think taking ALL the clothing out is too overwhelming. It would make me want to shut down. Instead, I grab a few items, say 5, look them over, try them on, etc. and make decisions. Plus, things don’t get wrinkled. Personally, I think taking everything out and throwing it on the bed is rather disrespectful of your belongings. Afterall, those were paid for with your hard earned money and were cherished at one time. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

I helped my mom organize her clothes, not by piling up all of her clothes, but by pulling out all of a very particular item. She had, for example, many white sleeveless scoop necked shirts. She did great picking out what she really needs. It was not overwhelming for either of us and we were able to get rid of many, many bags of clothes. Her closet is now very organized with like items together. It was actually fun to do!

I have a tip about the clothing 😊 I live in an area where we have all four seasons and I mean when it’s cold it’s very cold on and on ! So I have to sort my clothes this way that’s the first thing , sweaters first , then sweatshirts , all the jeans hung up in one space . Then all other tops, shirts I hang by color , all this makes it easier when I’m putting an outfit together I know right where to go !!! I hope you get the idea oh and when the season changes I switch places one in storage and one in my bedroom ! I love clothes but I use to spend to much time looking and this made it so much easier for me . Now all one season 👍🏻

I liked the idea of the pile, it’s the first time I really looked at what I had and actually did a real purge and re organization process. Although I am very organized I still tend to buy too many clothes but in the last year since I tried the Marie Kondo method I not only purged over half of my closet and dresser but I only purchased 3 items of clothing . This is a first for me . As for does this item bring me joy , I have to say that’s working for me too , as much as I love some of the things I have I am finding it easier to part with them , it really has to make sense for me to justify keeping or buying something new , That being said I hope I can stay on track for another year !

I've been doing one section at a time (dresser, closet ,drawer). Painting and organizing as I go. Been going through the entire house. Taking ideas from both Katherine and Cass as well as Marie. Your right, find what works for you. Fine tuning once the massive majority is done is easier. You can see what you kept if you've touched or looked at it again.

I agree with you about NOT basing getting rid of something on whether it brings you joy or not. Thank you for bringing up that point.

I agree with you about Kondo. I watch the ones you mentioned at the end. We know in the next ~3 years we are going to downsize our home. Therefore, I have begun the purging process. My struggle currently is my office and craft room. I have been successful in purging linens and my books. I have taken a Marie Kondo Surrogate workshop. There are some things I can use the list you have makes sense. Changing the way I fold and organize items so I can see and use everything. The joy part has helped me let go items that I have acquired that no longer have a use in my life. But the first wave resonates with people who need a simple tidy up. Those piles of clothing are small compared to my household with 7 kids 2 adults and 3 dogs. But the stuff does weigh me down and I am working towards freeing my self of things. My craft room is not being used effectively and that needs to change. I am on my way to being a collector that hoards scrapbook supplies. lol.

I think what you said was great put all the pants together etc. So great to hear that someone else doesnt feel "the joy" i didnt get that. Thanks for your video.

I read both of the books & they were great reads. I did my closet as my first project. Oh my goodness...I thought I was going to be sick! I allowed myself 2 hrs before my husband got home, & I had to have our bed cleaned off. I made it through it, some how, but size differences, older clothes, etc., helped the process go faster. I tackled shoes & purses from my closet next, on the next day. Yes, it feels wonderful when it’s over, but I was so overwhelmed in the beginning. I had to change things up a bit for my mental well-being. I took one drawer in my bedroom, at a time. When I took everything out of my sock drawer, I couldn’t believe I had so many socks! I whipped right through those...no problem. I couldn’t take everything out of all my drawers at once...No Way! Doing things in shorter, more manageable ways has eased my stress & panic immensely.

Oh, I’ve tried the dump all of my clothes on the bed. Ugh! I sloshed through it and got it done. The positive for me about it, I saw items that were duplicated or never used. I couldn’t see before because I am prone to putting things back in different places. But, it was overwhelming to do. Thank you for a great video 👏👏👏👏👏

The giant cloths mound only took me three hours to get thru, then it was done and the fabric items were all done. Now my books took a little over three weeks as I had a whole room of double layer books. Five van trips to the library later the room is down to single layers and two less shelves.

As a person of age, I have struggled for several decades with trying to keep my life orderly. Marie Kondo has done a good job getting people to think and be intentional about their lifestyle habits. Personally I like the folding concept, but I really love to keep things in confined or dedicated spaces. I can say that your videos and concepts have been a joy to this tired grandmother! Some people need the shock of a huge, nearly overwhelming challenge. Not me! I like to do things in bites( like the elephant). That way when I have a child or hubby pulling me away, it's not a difficulty finding my last point of entry. Keep up the good work!

Hi, first, thank you for your channel. Next, yes, I read the book, then watched a few episodes of the Netflix show. I have to say that I did do the dump everything from the whole house method. I started with clothing because there were items in every room. Knowing it was going to be a long project, I picked a time when there were no holidays or family events. Then I dumped everything against one side of the living room which still left us half the living room in which to relax and watch tv at night. It took me four or five days to get through all the clothes. At the end of it, my dresser had space, my closet had space and 5 big garbage bags of clothes went to a donation center. I was left with only 5 pair of shoes, 2 pair of boots ( 1 cute, 1 functional) a dressy purse, a small purse, a granny bag, and a medium-going-Away-for-a-long-weekend-purse. I’ve tried doing it in small sections but until I saw how MUCH I had when it was ALL visible I had no idea how much I could purge. When stuff is hidden away out-of-sight it didn’t get dealt with, it just got shuffled. I thought I was making headway but it ended up just being a circular hideaway Project. It might appear overwhelming, but truly, if you have so much that it appears that way, then you definitely need to face it and deal with it. As far as the mess it makes, pick a time when you can be a little inconvenienced and pile it where you can that won’t stop you from getting rest. Her method isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon...but you can see the whole map at the start and there are no illusions about the course. There also are no shortcuts 😉. It’s just painful, inconvenient and embarrassing enough to keep you from doing it again. At least that has been my experience. The last thing I have still to do is my craft room...and it is totally out-of-control. But I have hope. :) My hubby will be going away for a week long hunting trip and while he’s gone I will haul all my craft supplies into the living room so I can deep clean, move furniture and totally organize my craft space 😁

I tried the "Everything on my bed", cuz my older daughter told me that's the Best Way to go through my clothes. Well it didn't work for me!! I was so overwhelmed & everything sparks joy. I ended up putting it all in laundry baskets & stacked in my closet. Told my younger daughter & she came over that weekend. She did your idea, we pulled out the baskets & then she went through pulled out all my pants, & I went through them; then sweaters, etc til we were done. That was much Better & Easier for Me!! So now I do that every couple yrs & Love it.😊 I'm Loving the different Tips I'm learning from your Channel. It's really helping me reorganize All my Craft stuff, Group by Group. 😉😊 I know once I have it all done, it will be so much easier on me to keep stuff organized. Take Care ... hugz, Jill 🤗😊 tfs

I watched the show and was impressed that young people (I'm 50) were willing to do this. If they learn to live with only what they really enjoy then they might buy less!

I already do the like-with-like approach for getting started. I couldn't do the all at once approach for that amount of clothing shown, but I will do that for smaller amounts. As for the keep what brings you joy. Maybe the compromise is that when you know that you have to pare down between two items, then keep the one that gives you joy. You still have to be working on removing too many things. An organizer that I really learned a lot from was Helen Buttigieg from the show "Neat". She was good at knowing what style of organizing each person needed, and she really helped people. Many times Helen would figure out how much room there was for something, then tell the person to eliminate anything that was beyond that number. (ie, if a shelf could only hold 3 pairs of shoes, then that's what the person could keep!) So far, I like you, Cas and Helen and that tall woman from another Canadian show (forgot her name.) Wow, 3 out 4 are Canadians!! Alejandra is very inspiring, she is very much a micro organizer which I like, but uses too much plastic for me!

I agree with you about Marie Kondo’s methods, what works for me and what doesn’t. My brother had a wooden ‘ship box’ when we were kids, the size allowed sailors for personal possessions, no larger than a shoe box. On the top was a plaque that read, “A place for everything, and everything in its place”. It made an impression on me all through life, but like the younger versions of Marie and Cas and so many others, no matter how I tried to organize my belongings, it seemed my energetic/physical framework was spring loaded to return everything to chaos within days. It was frustrating and heartbreaking for me. I love interior design, feng shui Qi flow, having a dedicated space for everything, but nothing worked for me over time, in real life. While I was going through the final weeks of my beautiful cat companion’s life from Christmas until late January this year, I happened upon Cas’s Clutter Bug videos. They were interesting, honest, humble and made me laugh, but most of all they were a comfort, a balm for my shocked, grieving being. I kept hitting thumbs up and subscribed. I learned about visual/hidden and macro/micro storage and manageable decluttering…and I donated my Marie Kondo books (apparently, she’s a Minimalist Uber-Cricket…and I never will be). I began delving into other channels, and listening to/reading Atomic Habits, Elastic Habits, The Five-Second Rule and, most recently, The High Five Habit by Mel Robbins. Game Changers, all. Funny thing happened. I started being able to make sense of objects in available space. It just developed organically in the field of non-judgmental support in about a dozen channels I kept on during a difficult period of adjustment, while I was very vulnerable, completely unstrung, feeling I needed to learn how to live in an unexpected void. This establishing of a new relationship with objects in the context of my life today, this hour, this moment, was not just busy work or obligation. It was fundamental, bedrock relating to myself. Who’d have thought that presenters on youtube would help me release residue of childhood (1960’s) experiences with terrifying nuns and punishment at home over desks, lockers, bedroom…? We all carry old burdens and wounds, and professionals wade into the deep waters of clients’ emotional turmoil. Whole lotta sufferin’ goin’ on there. It’s never ‘just clutter’. I applaud all who mentor those drowning in chaos, help bail out and mend the vessels foundering on the rocks of mind-bending mixes of STUFF. NO one should feel like they’re failing when help can be given. Clearing the mayhem gives people feelings of liberation and a new lease on life. Positive change is possible, and it’s exciting, rewarding, even exhilirating. What I know for certain now, that I didn’t know a short while ago, is that I can have a new connection with home and all it holds. I haven’t Failed. I simply needed to learn some important principles and concepts from some intelligent and compassionate teachers/coaches. Now my application of creative engagement can flow…and I feel for the first time that I can soar and be at peace…it’s a great gift. I’ll be forever grateful. Just as weather warms and days lengthen, I happen upon this lovely channel. No matter how excellent the info, it matters to me where the presenter is coming from. There is a vibrational frequency at the core of all expression, every mode and form of communication. I respond and resonate with kind, humorous, sincere people who offer their talents to support and assist others, whatever their field. Norrine’s energy resonates with my heart/mind/spirit, nothing negative. I might not use all the tips, need all the solutions, but it’s all good, enjoyable and fun. Now, on with my day!

I feel the same way as you do regarding pulling out all the clothes at one time. That would be extremely overwhelming for me. When I purge clothes in my closet, I feel it much easier to go through the hanging clothes as they are and removing the ones I’m ready to part with. I form piles like charity, give away to specific, put in the rag pile, etc. and when I’m done, I’m done!

I happen to agree with you. My closet is pretty organized but I do need to go through it and do some purging. Pulling everything out that is already neatly hung, by type and then by color, would take me 3 times as long to purge! I have learned a lot from Clutterbug. I personally am pretty organized and like to have everything labeled and in its place, preferably behind cabinets or in opaque containers. My oldest son is the complete opposite. He has to be able to see everything, every surface is covered. It drives me insane! After watching Clutterbug’s videos, instead of wondering why my son is a “slob”, I just help him find organization that works for HIM. He’s done much better at maintaining his less cluttered room. I explained to him what I learned and told him his style is different. Not wrong, just different, and together we would find what works best for him. We also used a timer system and cleaned in zones to keep him from becoming overwhelmed. He did 95% of the work and I helped put things into boxes for donations and bags of trash, and lots of moral support so he didn’t feel like decluttering was a punishment.

I tried the piling technique but with one category of clothing at a time (pants on one day, tops - the following week, etc.). It was truly TRAUMATIZING to see how many duplicates I had (black tops), how much money I had spent over the years and how many items were in disrepair! It was a wake up call for me AND the family. One thing...I did it when nobody was home and I did complete one category in one DAY. Both exhausting and exhilarating and more than a bit embarrassing. What a wake up call!

Like someone mentioned below, I think the point of pulling everything out of your closet and dealing with it in one fell swoop is to give you a perspective on how much you actually have. Plus, to be quite frank, it's very motivating to clear it so you can sleep in your bed again! ;-) I just wanted to touch on one other thing you said. Marie Kondo does say to only keep things that spark joy (outside of the paper category!), but she also gives the second deciding point - that you have a place to put it.

I'm so happy I found your videos. Common sense seems to be the best method in anything and although I thought I was a intelligent person, I still manage to get clutter in one room or another and that is one of the biggest stressors in my life which is ridiculous! Worrying about NOTHING that is important. What a waste of my life. I wish I knew How to live more into the digital age and take pictures and keep that way, I just don't. Electronics "scare" me. I don't know what to buy, how to use it and don't even really want to learn. I don't like buying anything with long instructions and am not handy. I am creative though and can do that all day long. Like my kids got me a soda stream I think it is, and it sat on the counter for two years and is in my closet driving me insane! Along with air fryer, vegetable choppy things, bread machine, three sewing machines, etc. I manage my mixer, glue guns, curling irons and basics you HAVE to use, but this causes me EXTREME stress. Have the KonMari book started reading & never finished but did watch her on Netflix. It got me started & happy to say husband has joined in & folds his clothes the KonMari way, yay! We aren't clothes hoarders so for us it was easier just taking as you mentioned similar items & going through each. Even so I had 3 med. sized boxes of clothes to let go of. People are always remarking on my organized closets, though I feel I still have a bit of tweaking to do. My kitchen is coming along & I think by the summer I'll need to quickly go through the cabinets again but thus far everything that I've organized is still exactly in its place. There are a few things I'd kept that I will review in a month or so but other than that so far so good. I have a ways to go but we are renovating so I am able to do only so much. I think since it hasn't all been changed at once it has been easier to keep up with what I've already done & have formed good habits that I'll be able to take forward when I tackle the remainder after renos are complete. My books that are all in storage due to the renovation will be my most challenging area to tackle. It's my biggest weakness lol

I totally agree.....one category at a time....I recently went through my dress pants...then coats, then colored tees.... Mainly because we had a funeral. That's how it got started. But that's also, where it ended. I have to be in the mood to do it. A huge pile on the bed, would not get finished. I'd be throwing everything on the floor so I could get into bed that night. What if something comes up and you have to stop? I do have my clothes in color order, too. All the blues together, blacks, and so on. That helps alot....you start thinking, I don't need that many items in that color. And keep only your favorites. They are the ones you always reach for anyway.....I get what some are saying about the realization, that by looking at a huge pile, makes you see just what you have....Believe me, I already know I have too many things. Just want to go through it at my own pace. And I need to finish it soon. Because I take everything to salvation army....I'm sure there are people out there that could really use my items that are just taking up my space!! As far as clear container storage....that's fine, but not in my craft room. I have a wooden shelving unit with different types of containers that holds supplies. I use baskets, colored containers, etc. I have stickers in one, stored on their side with tabs for each category or holiday. I have lace in another, pre made tags in another, etc. I, myself, don't want to see all of those items through the containers. It looks too messy. I like the neatness of colored or concealed containers. That's just me. I know what is in each and every one, too!! Thanks for sharing this! Hello - I watched your video on MariKondo today. It was my first time with you and I want to say that I'm so excited to have found you! I immediately subscribed before the video ended and started searching for any others. I haven't watched all that you have just yet, but certainly look forward to every single one. From what I've seen so far, I LOVE you! Re: Mari Kondo, I have her books and have watched all her videos on Netflix along with anything related to Konmari. For me, it's a wonderful and simple system and I totally agree with it. I've been trying to use it, but have found it to be so overwhelming at the thought of piling all my clothes and related items on my bed. If I did that, I wouldn't be able to sleep in it for probably a couple of weeks! It's embarrassing to admit, but I have a huge amount due to my health issues and weight going up and down, for years. Some items are in multiple sizes and some have never been worn. I'm adapting my own system (kind of) and only doing it a chunk at a time. Like: any tops, then bottoms, shoes and purses, etc. I just own too many things to do it all at one time. A lot of them give me joy just thinking about them, but in being logical, I just can't keep them all. Some things are necessary and I need to keep, even though they don't give joy. I'll certainly have done a very large and necessary purge when I'm done, because my house is shrinking. I've run out of places to 'hide' or stash anymore until I'm done purging. Also, my Mom recently passed away and I have most of her belongings and many, many memory items. I know it'll take me a long time to do it all, but I don't want to give up, now that I've found a way to deal with it. I'm tired of looking at all the boxes, bins and stuff all over the place. It feels like my house is a storage building and I feel the overwhelm as soon as I walk in the front door from work everyday. I don't think I'm a hoarder, but I have too many things that need to go. I am positive that it will be better someday. Your videos will be a large part of my having a home, instead of just a house. Thank you for posting these videos. I feel like I just found a special gift that was meant for me.

Kondo's book worked for me. I still refer to it as my downsizing journey is not finished yet. I think each person must decide for themselves what works. Putting all the clothes, shoes, etc out showed me the volume I had and put it all in perspective. Give her book a chance, it may do wonders for you!

Thank you, Cadence! I may have to try it with a client that has a manageable amount sometime.... :)

@@TheCraftyOrganizer yes, my stuff felt unmanageable so I turned to the Kondo method and it finally clicked. It really is all in our head!

Cadence Chrome Agreed. When you read her books (the 2nd book is a good clarifier) you must be open minded. The minute you start thinking "this won't work" is the pivotal moment where it won't.

No no no to the big pile. I agree... Marie does have some good ideas but I would need to go by category. My holiday decor goes into boxes, like with like, so my crafting would also, but there are many sub-categories. I love your craft room. I hope to have one some day soon. You’ve heard of comedian George Carlin?... he had a hilarious routine ‘A place for my stuff’. That’s how I feel at times. Thank you for all your tips. ❤️

I agree about pulling out all of the clothing at one time, it would be just too overwhelming for me. Love your idea of focusing on each category of clothing!

The reason Marie has you put ALL your clothes in one place is to show you how much stuff you have. I believe we fool ourselves into thinking we don't have too much stuff. Her method has a shock value that you can't deny.

The clothing method actually went very smoothly for me as most things were already in subcategories so they were all easy to go through.
