My mother loved John Lindsay. THE most charismatic mayor in NYC history. Reached out to the Black community and listened to Black folk, when folk wanted to ignore that community. But had to deal with crippling strikes, a real bad snowstorm and and white flight. Add to that rising crime and a financing of welfare with credit, and those are recipes for disaster.

#6? Didn't Michael Barone once call him "the most destructive American local public official of the last half-century"? How bad was the guy at #7?

You know what's funny? The guy in 7th place on their list is Giuliani. The fact that Lindsay is on this list at all is a sick joke.

Lindsay was the worst Mayor of NYC, at least in my lifetime. He destroyed the city. Under his watch, crime and ethnic strife soared and the stage was set for the fiscal crisis that almost bankrupted the city.

BUT HE WAS THE " MAYOR OF THE PEOPLE" I WAS A YOUNG LADY( A CHILD) OF THE PEOPLE OF, NEW YORK CITY. MY GRANDMA WAS ONE OF HIS FAVORITE REGULAR PEOPLE, WHY BECAUSE SHE COULD MAKE HIM LAUGH, AND COULD COMMAND A ROOM, AND SHE COULD SURE COOK, AND HE LIKED TO EAT, AND THAT HE DID. I LIVED WITH MY GRANDMA, AND TWICE A MONTH SHE WOULD GO TO WORK FOR A SECRET ALL DAY JOB. IT WAS A SECRET BOSS, ONCE SHE WAS SURE I COULD KEEP THAT SECRET, I COULD GO WITH HER, AND SHE COULD TRUST ME, BUT SHE HAD TO MAKE SURE, I COULD HOLD THE AWE STRUCK KID IN CHECK IT WAS MAYOR JOHN V. LINDSAY, MY LORD I WOULD NEVER LET THAT SLIP TO NOBODY, cause that was her job

I don't remember Lindsay as a BEST Mayor.....too patronizing and sophomoric...And you bet he BLINKED back in the '60s.. Pretty bad--GRADE: D+

With all due respect I don't agree with he "kept public support," @ 3:20. His approval rating was quite low and he won reelection only because Marchi and Procochino split the more conservative vote. He lost his primary. I am not blaming Lindsay for his lack of popularity at this troubling time, just mentioning he kept only a fraction of his initial support.

New York's best mayor. He looked like a Mayor and acted like a mayor. His rapport with the black communities saved New York from the destructive riots other US cities faced at that time. As for the budget issues; NY city at that time was paying for for programs that were the responsibility of the state and the feds. Finally, John Lennon moved to NY when Lindsay was mayor and that is enough for me.

Granted he wasn't great but you can't fault the man for having a heart unlike today's heartless politicans.

Positively the worst mayor in NYC history. He jumped parties, made forays into neighborhoods where he did not belong, made terrible appointments as well. He gave the city to the municipal unions, and put us into bankruptcy.

@@williamerazo3921When then Gov Rockefeller formed the MTA, the takeover of the subways was eventually going to happen. The city's fiscal crisis a decade later made the takeover official.

That was his predecessor, Wagner, who "gave the city to the unions." Lindsay had a very anti-union reputation (there were three strikes under his watch!)
