He/she can simply let go of an item that was in his/her hand, and that item will keep moving with the person’s speed until it comes to an impact or until friction gets it to a halt. Good choice, you can see a great example of this in Hellsing Ultimate when this super fast vampire sprints in the middle of a squad of soldiers and then spins around to essentially remove the top parts of their skulls. Although I think he used something akin to a machete in size rather than a regular dagger.

No it doesn't, Flash not only gets faster, speed force also strenghtens his body to resist the differences in speed. So he gets stronger and tougher the faster he goes. Which is why he can theoretically knock superman down if he goes fast enough. Also the reason why he pummeled Anti-Monitor away from his universe by just running and imitating Jojo back in the first Crisis. Another thing about his speed, his ability to mess with the molecules in his body and around it came from the fact that he needs to lose density to acchieve Light Speed and above. Several comics have already shown what happens when he goes too fast without becoming intangible. Wind pressure gets so strong that while his body doesn't suffer anything due to adaptation, his weight immutable as it is, makes him get tossed upwards, he almost fell out in space due to that. So he always becomes intangible for his body to ignore that resistance.(his molecules literally dodge the air's molecules)

From my understanding, supersonic jets (edit: “can possibly”) shatter glass by flying too close to it. With help from the speedforce the flash can ignore the boom, outrun these jets, and run home with only the zip of his power. Also likely ignoring wind resistance as well since going from supersonic to zero in a second without destroying everything around him seems like a stretch. But the authors tend to keep the wind part just so people could remember “this guy’s fast”.

Punching full force will break knuckles.. hands are not made to punch. If the hands/knuckles were made for that we would have claws not nails or knuckles like knuckles from sonic. Look into how people condition there hands in martial arts, they spend years making there knuckles harder to avoid them breaking or we would all be punching through bricks no problem

And no, we wouldn't have knucles like that because we don't use our fists to hunt or kill, we also don't use them to atract a couple, those are the reasons why animals have claws, horns and stuff like that. I'm going to disagree with you on this one. The best weapon is NOT going to be a blade or anything with significant length, like a Bo Staff. Like you've said before, at those speeds, anything with length is going to get destroyed very quickly. Further, the main reason you use something with reach (like a Bo Staff) is to get an advantage on your opponent so you can hit him first. At high speed, you don't need a reach advantage. You're always going to reach your opponent first. Further, the damage that can be done with anything bladed is going to cap out once your strike goes all the way through your target, which isn't that hard. You can see videos of people chopping all the way through a pig with a sword at normal speeds. If you got going at just 2-4 X speed, you've already maxed out the damage capacity of any bladed weapon. Cut is cut. It doesn't get any more cut just because you went faster at that point. "So? What is the best weapon?!" Well, Shad, I'm glad you asked! :D The best weapon would be something along the lines of a tungsten bowling pin, about 9-10 inches long, depending on the size of your hand. An attack with that, at super-speed, is basically a melee CANNON BALL attack. The shockwave it would create in your body would destroy organs it didn't even directly hit if it was going fast enough. And, unlike a blade, the faster it goes, the more damage it causes to no upper limit. Further, being a tungsten bowling pin, it's going to be incredibly durable and unlikely to break.

More like peak human durability, somewhat similar to Cap America. Bullets can affect Flash. He can die if he is stabbed in critical organs. If there is anything that can kill a human being, it can kill Flash. But what normally takes regular humans weeks to heal, Flash heals a day or hours.

Something important about having double the speed would be that usually (depending on the reason for the speed) the person will also see things twice as fast as your average person, so they could do unrealistic things like accurately stab a rapier into the gaps in someone’s plate armor. So if their perception is heightened to match their speed then I think a thrusting weapon wins out. Sure the cutting weapon gets a larger increase in lethality, but that’s honestly not something I think you’d really need. The lighter thrusting weapon would also be much more easily accelerated meaning it wouldn’t ever slow you down or drag behind. I feel like just arrows or war darts would be good disposable weapons for someone with the more extreme versions of super speed. I know you ended up talking about trying to get a weapon durable enough to not break, but I think at some point just accelerating into a run could crack the weapon you’re holding even if it was a quarter staff. So if we’re talking “the world is in slow mo” levels of speed, then just having a quiver if arrows you can drop in place and grab arrows out of one at a time and just carry them into people. At that point even something like rocks would probably work.

At Flash/Quicksilver speeds though you just have to run past them, at an angle/curved path, and let it trickle from your hand or toss it to the side. Instant sandblasting at supersonic force, it would make getting hit by a Hurricane look gentle. Though ball bearings, BBs, or even simple gravel would be devastating as well, like a friggin claymore mine/grapeshot from a cannon.

Probably shouldn't use the flash as a comparison. Think about this when it comes to super speed. Air has mass. Oxygen, CO2, Nitrogen, H20, dust particles, etc., etc., At the speeds we move naturally, they're not an obstacle. The faster you move, the greater the resistance they will impose upon you. Whether it's time manipulation or sheer speed, the air resistance will increase accordingly. Even more so if you stop time. Because if you 'stop' time, you can't ACTUALLY move, because the particles around you are frozen in time and can't be moved. If they can be moved, they'll shoot out in all directions away from you at a speed approaching light speed. You'll basically annihilate your entire surroundings by moving through stopped time. Likewise, if you MOVE that fast, what happens to the air particles you collide with? At a certain speed (look at railguns for instance) you'll actually ignite the air. What's more, you're slamming INTO those air particles at insane levels of speed. You NEED super human durability to simply survive moving that quickly.

@@EatWave there are still sensible weapons for a teleporter. shirai kuroko(to aru/a certain series) for example uses a collection of metal spikes. using teleportation these can be instantly deposited insidea target's body, or be used to pin a target's clothing to the ground or a wall. I think caltrops could be used in a similar way, if the teleporter wants to do more internal damage(imagine running with one carefully placed between your vital organs) teleportation can also be used as a substitute for speed, so a fast stabbing weapon like a rapier could probably work as well.

From what I can tell, in regards to The Flash, the speedforce, the source of his power, protects him from the friction and force produced by going as fast as he does, but only when he is actually moving at those speeds, thus explaining why he himself isn't actually more durable. Something you often mention in these videos, "Is it good enough?" Once you've killed or incapacitated your enemy it doesn't matter whether you can do more damage. Even with double speed, I feel like a mace would bash heads in pretty well, and if your enemy's skull has been crushed, that's good enough, it doesn't matter whether a cut could be even more devastating. And when you talk about, "Yeah, indestructible sword would be even better at one hundred times speed," I still say, "Who cares? Dead is dead and if all I've got is basically a metal club that gets deformed with every hit because I'm just bashing things so hard... well, whatever I've hit is dead, too, I don't care whether the thing I'm connecting with is sharp, as long as I connect, the fight is over." Maybe that changes if my opponent has superpowers of their own, but the point is, once again, good enough is good enough, so all I really want to know is what's really good enough.

I've thought about this myself too, but the problem is that a lightsaber technically relies on burning, and you cant really speed that up. At some point, if you're fast enough, it'll just be a minor burn instead of cut off limbs. Still, given that the lightsaber is very hot, you could move quite a lot faster than normal and still slice off limbs. It'll depend on how the lightsaber (or equivalent) exactly works in the setting.

Because having them be separate gets you more superheroes, so more comic books, so more profit! Okay, the reality is in the storytelling style. How do you want to have your superhero solve problems? Will he dodge bullets and jump over cars, or pick up cars to use as a shield to block bullets, or just ignore the bullets like so many gadflies. How will your story unfold? Which picture do you want to draw, and who will that attract as an audience? It sets the tone of the character and the story, because their power is an aspect of their personality. The more you refine or limit the applications of the power, the more human they are, the more relatable; but the more broad and numerous the powers, the more they serve as an ideal or inspiration. That's why a lot of people think Superman is boring. He's got too much going on, too many abilities in a vast arsenal of options, so the only time he gets really interesting as a character is when someone introduces the kryptonite. Otherwise, a good Superman story depends on the other characters and their issues and safety being important, at least to him, so that they are basically able to call down divine intervention at the crucial moment of the episode. With a more limited hero, like the Six Million Dollar Man or someone who can just go invisible, you can make it more like a puzzle story, where they have to find a way to apply what they have to various situations they encounter. They are more easily in danger in general, so the audience can sympathize with them more, and they have to do more of the work the same way anyone else would. They can also be a little more comedic, because they will share many of the same frustrations as everyday people. They just have this ace up their sleeve once in a while. So, since we are already dealing with fantasy storytelling, it works better artistically to ignore the background physics a little and concentrate on the specialties. Does that help? I was discovering it as I was writing it out, but it makes sense to me.

As long as your body is practically invincible, super strength becomes completely useless when compared to super speed. It's nice that some people realize this. I have asked others before, on what super power they would have, and I always argue this point. Although, if you don't have amazing perception, super speed becomes really useless. I'm only 3 minutes in and I would have to guess a dagger. Because if someone has super speed, they can just duck under any attacks and shank people.

i would honestly say that super speedsters like the flash and quicksilver NEED to have super durability. Being an aerospace engineering student, first thing that occurs to me is that the pressure induced because of the shockwave (supersonic speeds) would have to be huge, and especially for the flash it would decimate his body if he wasn't super durable in the first place. (would also prolly have super-strength as well, since he wouldn't be able to move, keep his head straight or pretty much do anything without it). Second thing is, when you travel really fat, you deal with issues like surface heating. For example the SR-71 blackbird was completely made out of titanium because at it's cruising speeds, aluminum would melt off. Third problem would be the fact that just dust particles, water droplets and other particles would start to chip away at your skin. A similar process is actually used in real-life to remove paints, coatings, etc and polish stuff, called sand-blasting.

Wouldn't the shock wave traveling in the tendon/muscle need to be much more devastating than the air? Traction would also be a problem. A runner would recoil to hard and leave the ground. Soles of shoes would disintegrate. Wikipedia says a tether made of carbon nanotubes has a characteristic velocity of 6.6 km/s. A low level superhero who can move several times as fast as a normal human but is not even supersonic? Not quite. Consider the Dungeons&Dragons Quickling, rather than the Flash. They are short and can move several hundred feet in a couple seconds, but simply releasing a rock at that speed wouldn't be as dangerous as it would if they ALSO threw it, or fired it from a sling.

Actually, speed, if enough of it is used, can ignore the rules of impact and the need for durability. You can see this in the pictures of straw piercing all the way through trees when moving at high speeds in a tornado. The straw, normally, would never survive being punctured through a tree. However, because of the speed that it entered with, it came out the other side in perfect condition.

Sling. The two biggest take-aways: It is ranged and it is light. Ranged means that you don't need to be holding the weapon at the time of impact. So super durability isn't an issue. Doesn't matter if the projectile shatters on impact since you can use normal rocks if you wish. And unlike bows, the sling will directly benefit from super speed. Being light weight allows you to carry it around with minimal penalty. Just because you are fast doesn't mean you have endless strength and endurance. So the less you have to carry the better you can utilize your speed.

I mean, stopping power is just what will incapacitate a target. A thrust will tear apart less muscle tissue than a cut generally speaking, therefore a cut should theoretically have more stopping power since the torn muscle tissue is no longer able to contract and work anymore. However, as with anything, it's not that simple. Given that the human body doesn't instantly die and become unable to voluntarily and purposefully react unless the nervous system is disrupted such as with a beheading, or breaking the spinal cord, which is almost exclusively going to be done with a cut, it stands to reason for many that a cut will have more stopping power. Especially consider a cut will rend more of the muscle tissue. However, there is a great counter argument. Thrusting weapons such as spear or polearms have the advantage in that when your enemy is going to die in seconds, but still has those seconds to theoretically still move, they will be out of measure, and unable to harm you. Which by definition of stopping power and incapacitation, preventing the enemy from performing certain actions such as hurting us, means yes using a thrust with a spear or polearm is better than cutting. However, with a sword or whenever we need to enter the measure of an enemy, the ability of the cut to damage more muscle tissue will actually have more stopping power. So basically, use the right tool for the right situation in the right way. Cuts or thrusts can have more or less stopping power depending on the situation. This is why we have so many different weapons, and why different weapons were designed for different reasons. Truth is, to determine stopping power you have to get really in depth with the scenario and tools used. The reason swords are so great is because they are not designed like other weapons which are specially meant to cut or thrust, they are generally a middle ground that is more versatile than any weapon, even though any single weapon with a specific design is more effective at the task it was meant for, the versatility of most swords is why they are awesome.

Great video as always Shad, and I agree with your conclusions. But I think that with an hundred times the speed or even more using a quarterstaff or something like that you would probably kind of cut the target (maybe "rip" or lacerate the target is a better description) even without an edge.

Ranged weapons would be best. even if you ignore firearms, things like throwing daggers, arrows, throwing spears etc can be devastating because with your superspeed shooting regular enemies will essentially be like a shooting at a shooting range where you can take your time with the shot and hence you will have amazing if not superhuman precision. something like throwing daggers/spears can be accelerated far beyond what any normal human could dodge/block. Furthermore with ranged weapons you'll NEVER be in any type of danger since nothing could ever catch up to you. In the situation of something like 10x speed or greater, some form of large poisoned needles would be best because you can stock up a lot of them. Even if you can't throw them, you'll be able to stab people with it and since they are just needles, you don't need to care about them surviving since you should have a lot of them on hand.

Other than the fact that one is throwing away a finite resource and if one meets another speedster they are screwed. I think a small blade, tipped with a fast-acting poison, is a great idea for a speedster against non-speedsters and speedsters alike. No throwing necessary.

When you release the bow string, it would be moving according to real physics. You'd watch the bowstring push the arrow in what appears to you as agonizingly slow motion.

I'm talking about a middieval setting not super villains, with the added speed you could have all the time you want to aim for the weak spots in the armor which in real life speed you can try but won't be as fast and accurate as someone with incredible speed and also the time that a bow returns to its relaxed form is in the snap of my fingers even when everything around you goes so much slower in that time you could already grab a arrow ready to knock and shoot so I don't see the problem here especially when you can control your own speed

Now that I have watched it, Up to 5x speed; I would take a bow, arrow and a hand-a-half sword. Average human reaction time is 215ms, with the fastest known being about 40 ms. Factoring any faster would be a moot point, unless if you are facing other speedsters. Though, If you want even more punch... Any weapon that uses centrifugal force should also be high on that list. Thinking things like slings, rope dates and chakram

The introduction to this makes me appreciate the thought that went into Luffy's (straw hat) powers. Yay, someone else noticed the error! Although to anyone who believes that momentum is p = m+v, I have to ask: what would kilograms plus metres per second (for e.g.) even mean, anyway? I find that checking the units used in such equations is a very simple and helpful "sanity check", which is more effective at catching errors than one might expect.

weird conceptual question. with faster speed and a mid to long bladed weapon, do you thing air pressure would affect the wielders accuracy? blades have a sharp edge thus can act like wings.... so having super speed could affect the point of lift and turbulence when swinging or even just travelling at higher speeds. .... Also that air pressure and friction itself could cause the blade to heat up, like space craft.

Okay Shad. I highly disagree with your conclusion on incredible speed. A wooden quarter staff is not strong enough to withstand the forces of hitting a humanoid at over a hundred miles an hour. A spring steal bar would. Or better yet, a dull, scimitar shaped metal object, with that curve, would handle that kind of force. Wood can not.

It was about melee weapons :) But if you want to take ranged weapon into account, any of them except guns will be extremely stronger at twice the human speed and all of them will be if you are at speed of sound+ speeds (assuming you can still aim of course :))
