My favorite riff for this year is definitely the a riff from "Iconoclast" by Decapitated (the one during the verses). So much groove, tightness, simplicity and brutality.

The bridge riff in that song is much better in my opinion (the one before the bit with robb flynn). One of the standout riffs on that album for sure.

The main riff from Cardinal Red by Monuments was my favorite this year. In Stasis is a fantastic album overall and has become one of my all time favorites.

Bleed from Within is one of the best out there at the moment. Last and current album are just works of art. Unbelievable they are still so unknown and small. Maybe it's better that way so we get to enjoy this pure form of art without too many influences that inevitably come with more fame and publicity.

How much tweaking did you have to do with the pitch shifter? It sounds incredible.

I used the guitars normal pickups (not using the built in modelling at all) instead for those and pitched it down using Neural DSP Archetype Rabea. The Metallica, Sylosis and LOG riffs are all using the built in FX/Modelling and the Spiritbox and Bleed From Within riffs are normal pickups that are then pitched down in using Archetype Rabea :)

I like that Spiritbox riff (very Korn-like and creative), but my two favourite riffs of the year both happen to be from two underground extreme metal bands that base their sounds off of older, very controversial groups. The first is the opening riff off of Grenadier's "Atrocity Cycle", the opening song from their debut album Trumpets Blare In Blazing Glory. It is fast, mean, aggressive and quite melodic and catchy! The controversial band that they base their sound off of is Arghoslent, an incredibly racist group from the US (Grenadier is Canadian and not racist, by comparison). Make of that info what you will. The second riff that floored me this year is the riff at the 3:15 mark of the title track of Grave Pilgrim's EP Molten Hands Reach West. Such power and ferocity and quickness! Grave Pilgrim is a raw black metal band from Oregon whose style of dirty Americana-inspired black metal has been compared to the ever-controversial French black metal band Peste Noire. Again, as with the first one, MAKE OF THAT INFO WHAT YOU WILL.
