02:35 Maybe a small technical point, but so people won't be confused: The MV7 does NOT use "phantom power" -- it is a dynamic microphone, like the Q9U. Phantom power is used by condenser mics (or by devices like the Cloudlifter, if you're using that).

I own and use both mics. The Shure is very bright spunding and "essy" in my view without some heavy EQ to boost the low mids and bass. The Samson with the mids boosted is pretty close to perfect.

Thanks Omar for this vs review, very detailed and informative. Honestly when it comes to the sound quality, for the untrained ear, it’s really hard to tell these 2 apart. Personally however, I feel the Shure has a little bit of a better bass or low frequency response which makes your voice sound a little fuller and gives it just that little bit more umph. But Price wise $50 is quite a difference, so the Samson takes it on that front. As a personal preference tho, I’d go with the Shure.. but I wouldn’t have been able to know the difference if not for your incredibly thorough review, so Thanks again Omar!

5 months after this video, the Samson Q9U can be had for about £100/$120 compared to £260/$310 for the Shure MV7. Both are significantly less than the, at this point, ubiquitous SM7b (an excellent mic with a sound signature that people like that goes for a pretty high but not completely unreasonable £330/$400). These are the prices I found on Amazon UK and US new. The Q9U does fall behind the mics its often compared with at its launch but the price has fallen to reflect that and I think it might be worth potential buyers taking a second look at mics that were disregarded for better alternatives at similar price points. These prices could be an anomaly for now but these prices have been steady for the past 2 months I've looked at them (I've looking to upgrade). For me, the lone fact that the Q9U is less than 1.5x the MV7 in price (and less than 3x the SM7b in price not that this mic is even supposed to compete with that mic, no matter how overrated some may say it is) means its probably/currently a much better value for a value-orientated person. That and the fact it has some features specific to it compared to mics closer to it in price (both current and MSRP) like a hardware mute, high pass and mid-boost. The hardware mute is probably the best feature out of the 3 considering you could probably do a better job in software(something like voiceemeter) after 10 minutes of messing about with the settings.

i bought it 10 months ago and it skyrocketed in price shortly afterwards and is holding steady at £215 on Amazon as of writing this comment, which I really can't recommend as other mics of a similar price at that point may be better than it. I've yet to get a decent xlr interface (the one I had being very old and cheap filled with so much noise) so i'm using the usb-c output which is the only way to take advantage of the direct monitoring 3.5mm jack. it's nice to be able to get you used to your own voice and not hate it (pretty common phenomenon). for £99 I am very happy with it. The XLR jack makes it very versatile and I love the way it sounds on my voice. all in all, it's best to try and identify the natural register and timbre of your voice and try and buy a mic that accommodates. there is no one size fits all.
@galoriin5538 Жыл бұрын
haven't tried a mic preamp yet so i might get one of those and try the xlr input again

The Samson Q9U is an even better deal today at around $125 where the Shure MV7 is $250. I got my Q9U at $100 but compared to the Shure MV7, the Samson sound is muddy (even with the Low Cut and Mid turned on). I'll be happy with Samson for awhile but an upgrade will be needed.

Shure mic sounded better and considering the cloud lifter is $150 it still sounds like the MV7 is the way to go. Cool video!
@RockPlays2 жыл бұрын
for some reason the shure sounds clearer and makes the highs in your voice stand out more the samson sounds a little muffled which means its focusing more on the lows of your voice its a shame but thats probably a good mic for someone with a really deep voice but shure adapts to most voices.

This is the first Think Media video that I ever said naaaahhhh. Lol. The price of the Q9U has dropped tremendously b/c the sells were so horrible. Considering how great the Q2U was, they bombed the Q9U and for a mic right out of the box, it sounds pretty bad even for the average consumer. It can be EQ'd in post but again, too much work for the average person. I LOVE the review itself, though. As usual!

@@StrongLatinas I believe you did!!!! I'm glad to hear it. The ONLY reason anybody would buy the Q9U is b/c of how it looks. Definitely not how it sounds. But I'm right there with you. The RE20 is the mic I'll be purchasing in 2022. I love the "radio sound" and EQ right out of the box!!!

@GAMECLOSET2 жыл бұрын
Those are both great mics. Thank you , Omar! Stellar as usual! I am in need of perhaps two to three new mics. I will make that purchase AFTER I make my new camera purchase though so I can customize based on the camera's inputs. I know the one I am looking at has a hot shoe and an 3.5mm audio input jack (my current cam doesn't have a shoe- ugh). However, a great shotgun mic for my host segments will be great and I don't have to worry about a boom stand as my current studio is tiny. I have used a borrowed lav mic and it was great, but it recorded externally. That's isn't too bad of a problem, but it was a slight pain syncing up the audio especially when the lav and my camera were recording at slightly different speeds! Yeah... not fun. My voice over mic is a USB Blue Yeti- the standard in "not bad and fairly cheap". But I want a richer sound without having overbearing bass. After all, I don't have Barry White's vocal cords, but sounding rich with some depth is important. So many options... Thank you, again, for being our eye on the equipment. I love seeing stuff that otherwise may never have crossed my path.

The noise from q9u isn't coming from the mic. The noise is coming from the mic preamps not being able to give clean gain. Hence the mention of a cloud lifter. That wouldnt be the mic companies fault.
@JJohnson3132 жыл бұрын
But if I need to buy a cloud lifter with is roughly $100 them the $50 savings is out the window and now it cost more to get cleaner audio that the M7 already has. Not their fault, but defeats the purpose of this mic comparison.
@CoffeeTalkandTechJohnRyan2 жыл бұрын
@@JJohnson313 I prefer the MV7 there is not doubt in my mind it sounds better. All I care about is people understanding where the noise comes from. Plus you can spend 50 bucks for a mic booster if you know what your looking for. klark tek nek ct1 or cm2

Alot of people make their Shure sound darker "radio style" so getting that sound ootb may be appealing. Personally, I had the q7u and it cramped out on me after 3 weeks so went for a behringer that is similar in sound but will run forever despite the abuses. I got higher end cardioid od mics good for singers but I'm keeping my cheap behringer on its pod since people compliment on the sound...

I don't think I've ever heard such a HUGE difference in microphones on a KZbin comparison video. The Shure is MUCH brighter/clearer to my ears. It really seems like there must be some setting that's much different set for one vs the other? But if not, this is a comparison not worth making, the Shure is WAY better, to me.
