My two cents. For my set up, I use a lapel mic but run it into an audio recorder so I don't need to be tied to the camera. Plus, there's a limiter on my audio recorder which helps with peaks and it sounds better than my camera as a way to record it. Congratulations also on 100k. No surprise to me. You guys rock.
@PrimalVideo7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex! Yep, the next step beyond the microphones itself is the camera or recorder to get the most out of the microphones 👍 Thanks for sharing your setup with us, the audio recorder is a solid and popular option 😃

Communication Coach Alex Lyon Hey Alex. What lavalier mic do you use? Also, what audio recorder? Thx!
@alexanderlyon6 жыл бұрын
I currently use the Smartlav+ by Rode. You can hear it on my recent videos where you see me talking to the camera. The audio recorder is the Tascam DR-05. There are lots of good audio recorders and most new phones are great with the right audio app. I do also own the Boya mic mentioned by Justin. I like that one too. For some reason, the Smartlav+ just sounds a little better to me for my voice.

Communication Coach Alex Lyon Great information. Thank you for responding. Thank you for your help. I'll check out your recent videos so I can hear the rode mic. The boya mic continues to be mentioned in my research. Maybe I'll give it a shot, too. As for audio, I'll have to find a good app for my pixel 2 xl. Will look into Tascam you mentioned as well. Thx again for your help. I appreciate you.

Hey WordTalk Productions. You'll probably have some good luck with your phone for audio with the right app. I'm sure there are good reviews for free and inexpensive audio apps out there. In fact, I'm pretty Primal Video has done some reviews of audio apps. Good luck with it.

Whish one can be connected to an Xbox one controller? i am thinking of using a y cable to split mic and headphone (trrs male to 2 trs females, headphone and mic), then attach a headphone to the headphone end and attach one of these mics to the mic end for better quality in party chat and twitch streaming directly from the xbox. Also can the BOYA Lavalier BY-M1 be connected to the controller in "microphone mode" (the one that doesn't require to use the mic battery)? The xbox controller power is 5v --- 480mA and it's audio output is trrs (CTIA not OMTP).

Thanks so much for the valuable reviews. Very helpful. As an affiliate marketer myself I wanted to use your links below to go to the product. But they all seem to go to Amazon. I try to avoid buying "everything" at Amazon because I know I'm creating a monopoly as these other competitors drop off. I'm old enough to remember when AT&T had a monopoly on home phone services and could tell you they'd be out in 2 weeks, take it or leave it. Amazon recently upped the cost of Prime and now has a policy that says if you buy one book, you CANNOT review that book unless you buy a total of $50 in books. Your one purchase does not rate as a legitimate purchase, take it or leave it. A some point, they're going to force you to be a Prime member or get penalized on each purchase. You can see it coming. Do forgive me. This is a stretch from the discussion of quality mics. And Amazon is so good at what they do, they certainly deserve to lead the market. But with only Amazon links, you're helping to create this monopoly that will come back to bit us all in the butt. I'm merely suggesting to have some Ebay and Overstock and other options as well. I use Amazon; I don't want to sound like a hypocrite. But I am careful to spread my purchases around. Okay, keep up the go work. Your presentation is outstanding,

Thanks for the video Justin. I bought the Boya BY-M1 Lavalier Microphone to use with my Dell Latitude Laptop. I've plugged it into the audio Jack but i only get a very low output when I replay what I have recorded. It appears to be playing it back through the mic. Can you help?
@roisincure7 жыл бұрын
I just had a look on Amazon and a few of the reviews of the Boya BY-M1 lav mic say that while the sound quality is good, the overall build quality is not, and it stops working after two months (with only a month guarantee). Do you recommend a better-quality mic at a reasonable price? Thanks
@fp4man5426 жыл бұрын
Róisín Curé I've been using a couple of Boya BY-M1 mics in school for just over a year without any problems. The audio quality is more than good enough for education use and the long cable is a bonus.

Hi Justin, thanks for this very useful video! I'm an online educator and currently use a Blue Yeti microphone to record my online tutorials (it's ok but can be temperamental with Windows updates). I'm going to record a different type of tutorial where I'm going to have my iPhone positioned directly above my desk to record a practical task that I'll be teaching. I'm going to have the iPhone attached to a tripod, and I'll also have two LED lights on stands directed at the desk. I'm not going to use the Blue Yeti because it won't be practical due to distance, so that leaves me with a Lavalier mic or a Shotgun mic. I'm going more in the direction of the Lavalier. Can you let me know if you agree with this and if so, do you still recommend the Boya? Thanks, Anita!

Have you looked into getting an audio mixer? You can plug the mics into the mixer and plug the mixer into the cam USB port. Another option is just to get a separate audio recorder and edit the video to use that audio and sync it.

My last assignment I had HEAPS of wind interference using my iPhone, so I had to create an audio file to layer over the top!!! lol. sooooo bloody tricky to say something exactly the same way you did prior to get the lips in sync. lol. #makesmegigglesonreflection. Great Video Justin. I am wanting to screen record my video course, I am unsure about using a podcast mircrophone like the Rode NT as I move my head alot and I think the sound wont be consistent. The BOYA BY-M1 looks like a good option, but how does the sound ultimately compare to a podcast mic like the Rode NT. Should I focus on trying to keep my distance to the mic consistent and then go with the Rode NT or is the Boya BY-M1 very similar in audio and I should just do that as it will allow me more freedom to move my head around. thanks!

Nice review! Thanks for doing this. I'm curious ... does the Rode NT USB mic have an "gain" control on it? Almost all USB mics I've used with Windows 10 simply don't have enough "ooomph" to put out a usable signal. The only major exception to that rule is the Blue Yeti USB which DOES have a gain control.

As someone who likes watching cooking and baking videos, one of the things I enjoy is the sounds people make in a kitchen... the whole kitchen ambiance thing just adds to the experience.
