Just a little tidbit you shouldn't leave a minnow trap sit for anywhere close to 24 hours. When the bait runs out or the minnows get their fill they will start looking for ways out. I generally use smushed up hot dogs and have well over a hundred minnows in 15-20 minutes.

Yer awesome brother! I'm a Western New Yorker, 2 miles away from the Southern shore of Lake Ontario, midway between Buffalo and Rochester. Albion, NY is one of three, in the middle, of Erie Canal towns/cities in Orleans County. I catch many different kinds of fish in that canal! Saw tons of minnows last night...now I know how to catch them. Thank you my (new) friend.

I wonder if having the traps right next to each other actually skewed the results. Perhaps the hot dog or bread drew the minnows to both traps and they just swam into the one closest to them (with no real preference for the bait).

question what is the name of the species of minnow (not shiners) that are small silver and commonly sold in bait stores as bait for crappie please answer because i need to know for an aquarium build i am thinking of and i need to know if they can fit in a 38 gallon tank
@711600006 жыл бұрын
I trap minnows frequently and I use a handful of floating catfish bait wrapped in some stocking material and placed in the minnow trap. In half an hour I generally have hundreds of minnows in the trap.
@FishHawk6 жыл бұрын
That is awesome! I need to try that! Do you trap in creeks or ponds/lakes?
@711600006 жыл бұрын
In ponds and I meant floating catfish feed as in pellets not bait. The pellets send out the fish oils that really draw minnows. Usually in about five minutes the water is boiling with minnows trying to get into the trap. It's necessary to wrap the feed in hose or similar mesh to keep it from floating out of the trap. The trick is to find a body of water with lots of minnows. There's a public pond a few miles from my home that's filled with millions of red fin shinners and I've stocked them into the small lake next to my home as food for my fish. The red fins are active swimmers and are also very prolific so there's always large amounts of them present.
@FishHawk6 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! I need to find a pond like that. Where can I get the catfish pellets?
@711600006 жыл бұрын
Feed store, tractor supply or in a pinch the local fish store should have some pond pellets for koi.

What do you mean by setting the traps in the same hole and if I don’t see minnows in the water are they just hiding or there isn’t any minnows? I just started minnow trapping during quarantine so I’m inexperienced.
@FishHawk4 жыл бұрын
I sat them in the same hole because I wanted to see if the minnows liked bread or hot dogs more. It was just a test. I like to see minnows before I set my traps. I will walk along the creek and look for minnows. They could be hiding, but normally you can see them if they are in there.

Another thing to consider is the chemicals in processed meats can kill minnows within hours. I experimented with this a couple years ago. I fed a tank full of minnows one of those beef sticks you see at gas stations. I ground it up into tiny pieces. The next day the entire tank was dead. Another thing is, many "minnows" are really fingerling game fish. The DNR considers these game fish and size and number limits apply.
