Know how to catch all the grasshoppers you want? Find a hay field with hoppers in it, back your truck into the field and open both doors and then back up as fast as you can. you will have hoppers jumping on the doors and inside, when the truck fills up slam the doors and pick the bugs up!

Nostalgia with a bit a new trick. Glad you enjoyed the vid.
@wizbangIWD7 жыл бұрын
It seems that the green would work better than yellow, they make yellow light bulbs to NOT attract insects, of course I've never used yellow bulbs so I can't say from first hand experience. They also make white glow sticks, they're a little hard to find but I think they'd be the best over all. Nice video by the way. ;)

BadAss!!! Gonna utilize this trick! Maybe even adapt it a bit to use a small white lantern instead of glowsticks. Hope you're feeling better Bob!!

A couple weeks ago I'd never seen or heard of a minnow trap. Thanks to youtube I've now spent hours learning all about it. Now to go to the city park with creek and catch some. I can't wait to meet the game warden and the police force of a major city. It'll be a great ice breaker.
@garryflint74192 жыл бұрын
Just make sure of the restrictions of type and number of minnows that you can have. Different states counties and even bodies of water may have different rules.
@xxskippernate409xx6Ай бұрын
Yeah, also make sure that you aren't catching any fry (baby fish). I thought I had two mudskippers in my first trap, I was looking for minnows. When the "mudskippers" didn't survive out of the water as long as they were supposed to, I remembered a strange looking fish that we have here - Lingcod. I caught two baby lingcod and thought they were mudskippers. Rookie mistake, I won't make it again. But I hope nobody else makes that same one. I wasn't too familiar with mudskippers, other than I see them in brackish water tide pools.

might could use one of those sidewalk solar lights instead of the glowsticks.
@BobHansler8 жыл бұрын
Brilliant idea. That'd probably produce more light and attract them more efficiently. Renewable solar lighting... Thanks for the inspiration sir.
@samwilliams52836 жыл бұрын
Just the top if you place it in the trap bugs will escape when you open it to remove it. Duct tape on or glue a magnet on to hold it on the trap.
@gooutside60558 жыл бұрын
that's a cool trick, Years ago I saw some green submersible lights you could use to attract fish.
@samwilliams52836 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it will work to use a solar light stake top poked through the mesh just the LED not the stake. Remove before tossing in the water.

what if u put part of an ant or bugs nest in the trap and dip it in water to remove dirt and hopefully leave most of the insects inside . 😓 just an idea , do you think it would work?

Just because they can't distinguish that color light from other colors doesn't mean they don't see the light. There are light sensitive receptors in our eyes that only see in black and white and they're what we use to see at night. I would bet pigs and deer would have them too.
@JA-gx4hb4 жыл бұрын
Bob, I thought it was pretty darn interesting. My boys and I will try it tonight.
@haynerbass8 жыл бұрын
Would it help any if you put a sleeve of sorts over the trap so that the light really only comes out of the ends? That way they would only be flying toward the entrances instead of trying to get in through the sides.

@dannyh90106 жыл бұрын
This is how my cousin and I did it before fishing when we were kids. Take and old fuzzy blanket and hold it stretched between you and a helper and walk a field with it. (The vintage 100% acrylic ones our mom's all had, and you can constantly find at Goodwill for $2 work great). The hoppers barbed legs will stick to the fuzz like Velcro. Pluck them off by the dozens.
