Restoring a vintage item, especially furniture and jewelry like this watch bring down the value quite a bit. Guitars are another item that is more valuable in it's original state, even if played over the years, than if it was restored to look like new. On one episode of ARS, a woman had this 18th century dresser that had numerous drawers and was tall. She thought it looked shabby because of the fading of the finish and she hated the hardware so she had it professionally refinished and replaced all the knobs ( tossed out the original ones). She inherited it from a relative. In its current condition it was worth $30k, only because of the rarity of the piece and it was a Chippindale. If she had left it in its original condition and didn't do a thing to it other than dust it off it would have been worth $300k. It was only one of about 5 known in existence.

I bought my Rolex GMT ref. 1675 in March, 1977 in Bridgetown, Barbados for $400.00 U.S. Other than down time for servicing, (usually 6 weeks every 10-12 years), I have worn the watch every day for 47 years. Rolex in Toronto will take your watch, examine it, and send you an estimate for service, which you must sign and return to them before they will commence any work. On every service occasion the estimate has recommended replacing the dial, the hands, the bezel and the crown and tube to bring it up to todays standards. You can decline all the changes except the crown and tube replacement which I have always done. If you try to decline the crown and tube work they will return it to you untouched, since they absolutely insist on ensuring that the watch is waterproof to their standards when it leaves their shop. The dial and hands have long ago lost their luminance but they are original and will remain so. BTW, a typical service invoice for cleaning and oiling the movement now runs in the $1,000 to $ 1,200 range (Can. $).

@@bighands69 He knew enough about It to know being double stamped is uncommon at least. He knew enough about it to know that the value lies in its uniqueness and originality. He knew that if he sent it in Rolex replaces all worn parts including the dial. I repeat, you don’t wear something with you everyday for decades without knowing what it is or doing some research. Even on basic repair information he would have learned enough about it to have a general idea of its value. A person who knows nothing about a watch like that would jump at the chance of getting it repaired and serviced. He knew more than he was letting on, either that or he’s incredibly dense.

Nothing was mentioned whether the watch came with the original box and papers; if so, that would add quite a bit more value! Also not mentioned is this model has the small triangle gmt hand which is very desirable and adds value! He does need to have the second pinion spring tightened down a bit to make the second hand less jumpy due to gravity! This model came with the “butterfly” 1565 calibre movement which beats around 18,000 bph. Awesome!

Rolex have always been good, but not necessarily the best. The fact that everyone goes nuts for them is a triumph of marketing.

His uncle was quite the guy... The kind of guy who’d give you the watch right off his wrist.

It could definitely use a clean and service, no polishing or hand/ dial replacement but for sure a clean. Seconds hand stutter between 12 and 4 pm quite badly. I hope this man still has this watch and it runs well.

Buddy, you bought a Rolex when you were 19 and you're mad your family didn't give you stuff? Take pride in what you've earned and worked for.
@briancougar20446 жыл бұрын
I think its a more interesting story that you bought it at 19, than if you grandfather had actually given it to you. At 19, I could only afford to buy myself blue jeans.

Hopefully someday you can hand it down to YOUR grandchildren! :)

This is a good lesson to us all , if you have vintage watch be very careful not to send to original manufacturer unless they can guarantee a sympathetic overhaul. I have my fathers omega Ck2915-1 from 1959 and over the years it has been serviced by Omega they have virtually changed every part to a more modern part, in result completely ruining the watch and its aesthetic appearance. This guy was clever to keep the watch as original 👍

Wearing it for forty years is awesome and to me is worth not having it be in mint condition.

Can you imagine an original retail price of $275-350 for a Rolex GMT?
@RabbitWatchShop Жыл бұрын
What's crazy is that when adjusted by inflation, you'd only pay $3,496.47 today for that watch.

'Could've been worse, he could have used the Jaguar dealer who did the 48,000 mile service on my F-Type. I think it's one of those new "woke, inclusive" franchises...only employing blind service technicians!
