I'm excited to see you move the chickens in. I see however you'll need to clean that popper often.

I'll be ordering them soon hopefully in January. I'll have to see when their hatch dates are.

It the perch popper a countdown timer from when you close it? Or will open a the same time everyday? If I collect my eggs at different times during the week wit it open at random times from when I closed it?
@petebeasttexashomesteading2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's a countdown from when you put the perch up after getting the eggs. I noticed that when I put the perch up, the light would blink a few times so I'm assuming that will start the count down.

I just found your video, thanks for the great quality. Have you found the sound of the popper to be a problem? I just received mine, but am having second thoughts after seeing comments about the sound.
@petebeasttexashomesteading3 жыл бұрын
Chickens will eventually get used to it like any other noise or you might try to place some type of rubber stopper to reduce the noise.
@wayneleamon31863 жыл бұрын
Pete, when it is all said and done and the dust settles. You're going to have the Cadillac of chicken coops. I like that perch popper but not the price. I'll be watching to see how it works for you.
@petebeasttexashomesteading3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a bit pricey but I was impressed that it was made of solid aluminum and not plastic.

yes and I won't have to get up early to open the nesting box manually 🙂

They only thing I can think of, it's going to scare the daylights out of the birds when it slams down in the middle of the night....add some type of absorber, as in a pc of rubber onto the plate. Last thing you want is to imprint onto the chickens that the nest boxes are potentially "hostile."
@petebeasttexashomesteading3 жыл бұрын
I'll start the process a few weeks before their egg laying age so they'll get used to the sound.
@brucealvarez92633 жыл бұрын
Not a bad idea. Keep in mind that the perch will be dropping in the middle of the night when the birds are asleep so I doubt they will associate the sound with the nest boxes.

That abrupt sound at any point can't be good or "gotten use to". I bet some bright individual will come up with a really good "fix"! I bet the creative wheels are turning. Good luck!

Is it magnet? That holds the perch up?

I dont have one in front of me to confirm but I think they should have used a spacer made from a silicone/pvc washer so the two sheet metal pieces dont have so much friction and the bolt can be tighter without rubbing...

looks ok but what is you DON'T collect in the evenings. That all this is good for. If you collect in the morning or ANY time before sunset this is of no use.
@carolleenkelmann38293 жыл бұрын
Your hens are going to die of fright when that popper let's the bar drop in the middle of the night! Better make it early morning wake up time or insulate something to dampen the sound or you'll have no eggs!
@petebeasttexashomesteading3 жыл бұрын
I'll start the process a few weeks before their egg laying age starts so they'll get used to the sound.
@Cathy_MidwestHome_Hens2 жыл бұрын
That seems unnecessary. We have no issues with our hens hanging out in their nest boxes after laying.

@petebeasttexashomesteading3 жыл бұрын
Maybe for you but most people don't like getting up that early to open the nesting box.
@brucealvarez92633 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your birds. The roosts in my coop are 4' high, the nest box at 18" so the girls tend not to sleep in the nest boxes ... unless they are broody (in which case they get banished to the broody buster, I have no rooster). BUT I've seen other channels where the birds do sleep in the nest boxes so something had to be done. This would be a good solution for them.
