Born in 56, I sure remember Dick Bruce's McKensie's doberge cake commercials (along with their custard pie and pound cake commercials). Today Rouses sells both doberge cakes and Gentilly cakes. I think the best place for Gentilly cakes was at Lawrence Aiavolasiti's bakery, "Mr. Wedding Cake" on Filmore and Elysian Fields. I lived just off Filmore back then. My dad went to school with Mr. Lawrence, so naturally he made my wedding cake too.

How the Po-BOY got it’s name , a very very long time ago when my grandfather was growing up in New Orleans there was a lady they called mama that served sandwiches at the end of the street car line. She would give the workers of the streetcars a sand which she called her (poor boys) sandwich it was a French pistolette With French fries dressed with Mayo tomato and lettuce drenched in roast beef gravy and cheddar cheese she sold it to them for 5c. This is my favorite sandwich to this day reminds m of my grandfather bringing me back to the city to eat at mothers

1. Elizabeth’s Cala (Bywater) 2. Yakamein (French Quarter) 3. Gumbo shop (French Quarter) 4. Joe Gambino’s Doeberge Cake (Veterans Blvd, I think). I’ve just moved to NOLA for two months and I love love love Two chicks cafe in the CBD; the under the omelettes. Tastes like the sea. Angelo Brocato’s rum and raisins gelato is a love too. Definitely gonna try out Elizabeth’s soon. Does it get busy or requires a reservation?

i don't think reservations are a thing, but it can get busy. When we went, we had about an hour wait. Totally worth it. I highly recommend the praline bacon.

When I lived in New Orleans ( late 80s to early 90s), when I had family or friends visiting I would take them to the Gumbo Shop. It was a restaurant in the heart of a touristy area with mostly authentic local cuisine at a reasonable price. Not only tough to find in NOLA, but in any tourist destination in the country/world.
