They actually have Ms Linda’s yaka mein at Bywater Bakery. Might only be on Sunday’s (or maybe it’s a different day) but it’s really amazing with coffee for breakfast on a morning after heavy drinking! Medicinal almost lol.

I've only heard of callas once before and that was from Charlie Andrew's cooking channel. He shows how to make Ya ka mein too. Please bring us more of these New Orlean's local treats. This is the best travel channel because you really go in depth and walking the streets, I feel like I really get to see the place and get a feel for it. I love the history and the stories you tell. Thanks!!!

Born in 56, I sure remember Dick Bruce's McKensie's doberge cake commercials (along with their custard pie and pound cake commercials). Today Rouses sells both doberge cakes and Gentilly cakes. I think the best place for Gentilly cakes was at Lawrence Aiavolasiti's bakery, "Mr. Wedding Cake" on Filmore and Elysian Fields. I lived just off Filmore back then. My dad went to school with Mr. Lawrence, so naturally he made my wedding cake too.

So here’s something I’m not sure if you know or not. How the Po-BOY got it’s name , a very very long time ago when my grandfather was growing up in New Orleans there was a lady they called mama that served sandwiches at the end of the street car line. She would give the workers of the streetcars a sand which she called her (poor boys) sandwich it was a French pistolette With French fries dressed with Mayo tomato and lettuce drenched in roast beef gravy and cheddar cheese she sold it to them for 5c. This is my favorite sandwich to this day reminds m of my grandfather bringing me back to the city to eat at mothers

Hey Y'all! My crew and I went down there for Mardi Gras and we actually walked from the French Quarter to Elizabeth's! Worth the trip! I had the French Toast Burrito, and we all tried the praline bacon. Heaven. Need to try the Cala next time. Thanks for the video! Hope to see you around Halloween!

My favorite is file gumbo without the okra. There is nothing better than the chocolate or lemon doberge cake. I left New Orleans many years ago and these two foods I really miss.

There was a recent newspaper article about endangered alligator snapping turtles being poached for turtle soups. I would be very reluctant to eat turtle soup with the lack of a more sustainable resource for the meat since most, large turtles are either endangered or threatened nowadays.

1. Elizabeth’s Cala (Bywater) 2. Yakamein (French Quarter) 3. Gumbo shop (French Quarter) 4. Joe Gambino’s Doeberge Cake (Veterans Blvd, I think). I’ve just moved to NOLA for two months and I love love love Two chicks cafe in the CBD; the under the omelettes. Tastes like the sea. Angelo Brocato’s rum and raisins gelato is a love too. Definitely gonna try out Elizabeth’s soon. Does it get busy or requires a reservation?

When I lived in New Orleans ( late 80s to early 90s), when I had family or friends visiting I would take them to the Gumbo Shop. It was a restaurant in the heart of a touristy area with mostly authentic local cuisine at a reasonable price. Not only tough to find in NOLA, but in any tourist destination in the country/world.
