No, it's not German engineering, it's American regulations. European G-wagens have horizontal exhaust pipes that stick to the sides. In US however they had to bend them downwards in order to pass certification in all 50 states.

Great side by side video ... I’ve only seen the G-wagon off-road in KZbin videos. I’ve seen plenty of mall crawler jeeps that could never go off-road with 22”s & low profiles. I’d still take the Jeep, you can buy touch up paint easier, $12k paint probably doesn’t have touchup kits.

Hi Guys great review as usual. When I served in one of European armies we had G-Wagen(s) laying around and they were our to go vehicle. Their original name is Steyr-Daimler-Puch and we called them PUCH-G. Those things in stripped down military version were indestructible. I honestly doubt that Jeep would survive that kind of punishment. Their quality is comparable to Toyota Land Cruisers you can find in Africa with half a million miles on them. Our army was using PUCH-G(s) over very rough terrains with very little maintenance and they would just go. 500k kilometers and than they would sell them to public. Also, we had Pinzgauer(s). But that is different story. I would eventually like to try Jeep (currently have 2018 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road) and I like their design. But nothing compares to G-Wagens or Land Cruisers in terms of durability.

As someone who's been involved with off roading for my whole life, that Jeep is in another league off road, better approach and departure angles, better clearance, better bigger tires, and a price tag you're not scared to take off road. Mercedes focused too much on making the G wagon a fancy expensive vehicle that strayed away from its roots too much. While the jeep is has been almost identical to all Jeeps from the past, with just the addition of some basic technologies and amenities that you'd want. The fact that the 50k jeep has a steel bumper and the 140k G wagon has a flimsy plastic bumper like that is kinda bad

Those G-Wagons are total poseur rigs. Nobody but nobody actually takes those on anything rougher than an unpaved dirt road or dirt parking lot. All the ones I see in town are driven by douchebags, revving at stoplights and taking off like it's a drag race in town, or rich trophy wives. Every real car review comments on how crappy the on-road handling is with it's vague steering and squishy suspension, but... it's a status symbol?

The G Wagon is freaking awesome! And this comes from someone who owned two Jks (2007 & 2013) and two JGCs, Jeep prices have become ridiculous. Last year I traded my 13 in for a 17 Nissan Frontier Pro4x, in which I got the old school fun to drive of a Jeep, the utility of a truck ( But not quite the approach - break over - departure angles), and a price that was not inflated for the mall crawl'n Rubicon/Tacoma better known as soccer moms vehicles...

As a Mercedes twin turbo 4 litre V8 i'd expect more horse power... My 14 year old naturally aspirated V8 Cayenne is 340bhp. I'd buy the Jeep every time!

@X X Not reliable? Really? Cayenne almost 15 years old, doesn't miss a beat as a daily driver. Had three Jeep Grand Cherokee's and 1 Cherokee over the last 20 years or so and only one minor issue with a cam sensor on the last one (Mercedes Diesel). In that I also had a W203 Mercedes C320 V6... Did almost 200,000 miles and it had one thing go wrong with it (Was air sensor at 140,000 miles), that failed due to over oiling of the Mass air flow. None have ever broken down or let us down and have mostly required basic maintenance. Unlike most of the rubbish on the roads built in the last 4 years. Best friend of mine has had four Mercedes and the last model he for rid of it was so badly built. Neighbours have KIA or imports and GM/Fords. Anything from wheels buckling to coughing and spluttering one cold starts to bits just dropping off. You honestly couldn't give me most new cars to keep! I was previously forced to take a company car like Mazda 6 as one example - again - all rubbish! Aunt just got a new VW passat to replace her old passat... She hates it! Enough said mate!

Thanks for testing a G-Wagon in its "natural" habitat. The few I've seen remind me of a greyhound that is stuck in a kennel all day. What a sad existence. And the Wrangler Rubicon at $50k+ is just crazy. They'll sell all they make though. Cars as a whole are just getting stupid expensive! My wife has a 2018 Wrangler Sport S (JKU) because the JLs are just too much money. Mid-to-high $30k seems reasonable for a Wrangler. Even in the low $40k for a Rubicon. But in the 50s? That's a lot of money. At least they hold their value well!

I'd rather have them use a real offroad G for that and not the fancy rich guy AMG version with the silly (for offroad) side exhausts and fancy alloys. But sadly, as far as I know, in the current 2018 generation they so far only offer the G500 and G63. Or just use a Unimog :-)

Ram Runner jeep fan here, but check out the g wagon 4x4 squared. Thats the good package, and sad to say, better than the rubicon, our favorite jeep package. The stock portal axles. Now, you can argue back about the price difference. The portal axles are a trump card.....

Like I said I love the g wagon but if your a true off roader you will break the bank modifying a g wagon. Personally I wouldn’t own either to go wheeling. Il take a 1998 Cherokee str8 6 5 speed and build it all for under ten grand and have a true monster

I do love the cherokee, but it doesn’t have a frame. It’s a unibody, that’s my only beef with them. They are cool and cheap to build.

Absolutely epic. I thought that looked like Oregon environment. I detailed a G Wagon at work today. One word that kept comming to mind on the inteior was quality. AMG Mercedes is generally really impressive in that department. All other Mercedes that aren't AMG feel So awfully cheep inside compared to anything.

I own JKU Rubi and a 1982 G Wagon, while my 1982 G Wagon is old it still shares some of the same drain-train features of the new G Wagons. Given only 1% of the new G Wagons are actual taken offroad, they are capable 4wds. They don't flex like a Jeep but they are extremely stable and with the Diffs locked will go almost everywhere a stock Jeep Rubicon can. They are both great vehicles but you aren't comparing Apples to Apples. Also just FYI, you should always disconnect the sway on flat ground. If you don't and try to wheel you risk damaging the electric sway bar disconnect motor and they are really expensive to replace.

The Jeep has slightly higher ground clearance and sway bars can be disconnected so it is better off-road than the G-wagen.
