You think he’s the kind of person you don’t have to worry about turning on you? Seriously? I wonder if all the innocent men he’s sent to the train station would agree with you? He literally kills innocent people because they no longer want to work at the ranch because people with a conscience can only be at a place that forces you not to have one for so long before they have to leave. He’s constantly beating up men that are supposed to be his “family,” and all it takes is a nod from John for one of those “family members” to become a permanent resident at the train station. The man that he respects so much literally groomed him as a child, and quite literally raised him to be his murder for hire just so he doesn’t have to get his hands dirty. John literally brain washed Rip. He took him in right after his entire family was killed… when he was at his most vulnerable… and told him the other guys would be his family as long as Rip was willing to do anything and everything that John asked him to do. That includes murdering people. In fact, the only reason John didn’t have him killed as a teenager after he killed that other guy in self defense with that rock was because Rip was willing to be BRANDED! Like a freaking cow. And once that brand is burned into their flesh the only way they leave that Ranch is in a body bag. Now Rip threatens people so he can brand them too. Rip isn’t honest. And he’s only loyal to John and Beth. He’s a murder for hire that was brainwashed to think that all of the truly horrific things that he does are done for some higher purpose, when in reality he kills people so his boss can keep his ranch for one more day. The whole thing is twisted…

I grew up on a ranch with an emotionally distant father whose only voiced concern is for the cows, his ranch, and his land. My dad loved us, but he didn’t have the slightest idea how to show it. So yeah, this show holds a lot of memories for a 42 year old rancher who is probably only slightly more emotionally mature than Rip and John. My dad is 72, hard time to walk. He was watching us herd cows into pens for sale next week. After we were done, we got a solid round of criticism before he took my son out hunting rabbits. It’s kinda funny how much easier he is on my son than he was on me. Hunting with him? When I hit 8 and wanted to hunt rabbits/grouse/etc, he would just say “you know where the shotgun is, you better come back with something to show for every shell you use”. I like to poke at him about how he’s getting soft in his old age. And yes, we’re branded, but we did it to ourselves, his only part in it was calling us idiots after we were finished. Myself and my best friend did it at 15 while we were bored in a snowstorm, hunting moose in one of our hunting/herding cabins. We got snowed in for three days. 15 year old boys with too much time on their hands become idiots. When he gave me the ranch finally, three years ago, he didn’t even tell me. Just had a lawyer show up with papers. Three years later, we still haven’t spoken about it.

Today is the 10th anniversary of my fathers death, there were times I hated him, and there were times I loved him, he was a hard man, but, he taught me how to fish, hunt, to be independent, he was the hardest worker I’ve ever known, he instilled me about hard work and I still do that today, he said:”Son, no matter the job, even if its the shitest job, always be the best at it”, Rest In Peace dad, I miss you

I think the main reason this show strikes a chord down to the soul is, it's so important for a boy to have a good father. If you're lucky enough to have a man's man for a father, it's easy to hate the discipline. Easy to complain that he doesn't show enough love. At the end of the day, When he's gone, Your thankful for it, because you become a dependable warrior for your family.

@@omniscension8967 There are two different scenes. The 1st mentioned by Roger is on the clip. 6 1/2 minutes in. John Dutton wants Kayce to run the bunkhouse. He can't do that while living in it. RIP has to give up his personal lodging and return to the bunkhouse and Kayce takes his home. Mine wasn't in the clip. Just a response to what RIP did earn for doing what he was told.
