This show is filled with amazing, fascinating, well-crafted characters top to bottom, but Rip has always been the standout to me. There's just something about him that never fails to captivate me. He does everything he can to protect the ranch and the Dutton family, even though he's not got any stake in the land or any blood of that family running through his veins. He never asks for anything in return for all his blood and sweat, never complains about what he has to do or what's done to him, nor does he take any of it for granted. He's just appreciative to have the only thing that has ever felt like an approximation of a home to him, because he never got to have that growing up. Where all the other Dutton kids disappointed, or clashed with John or went their own ways, Rip was always there when he was needed, every single time, and his loyalty never had to be questioned or verified. The scene depicting Rip receiving land on the ranch as John's letter is read to him never fails to make me emotional, as the moment even breaks the stoic tough guy himself. For all he's given, Rip is finally rewarded with what he deserves, not just with a tangible mark of his role within the Dutton family that the property signifies, but far more by the understated yet powerful way John fully accepts him as his own son. In many ways, this is also a sign that as time goes on and the battle for the ranch and the land intensifies from all sides, John realizes that everyone there is his family, whether they share the same blood or not, because they are all fighting for the same thing. And there's a beauty in that.

The sound mixing on the roof scene is amazing. Letting the song play while Rip makes his way to Beth, then slowly dropping the track to only the bass while they greet each other, then drop the track completely to allow Rip to open up to Beth and let her know how he dealt with his family trauma, only to resume the music slowly while the unspoken "I love you" lingers in the air. It really adds to the scene and the dialog.

The writing on that one scene is incredibly symbolic. She's watching RIP be a "good dad" and finding a lot of satisfaction in it...thinking she's getting a small insight into RIP that no one else sees... and then her father is just standing there in her blind spot taking it all in...

Yellowstone by far has been the BEST show that I have ever watched. The characters are beyond AMAZING especially the Dutton family. All have their own distinctive character that makes them unique. RIP from the get go was my favorite. He's rough, but he's loyal and will protect the Dutton's as if they were his own family. The bike scene on the side of the road blew me away, RIP was fearless and ready to brawl. There are just way too many episodes, because they are all damn good. I can only hope that after Season 5, that a movie is made of Yellowstone to hit the big screen where it will come to a successful and nominated award best script, best actors, best tv show to ever air!! TEAM RIP!

The way he developed the Rip character is just BEYOND amazing. To create a character that you can hate, love, want to destroy, and want so support to every end is just beyond impressive. He can seem so selfish, yet he is also the guy who truly puts something bigger than himself as the driving force of his life. He seems so dam mean, but at the same time never really let's himself get in his own way to teaching lessons that he truly feels are for other people's good. Will give his life those he is dedicated to without hesitation. Really amazing!!

Ahh, SQ, what you say is beautiful, and timely. I was recently called "Rip" by someone who thinks how I'm living my life resembles Rip on this incredible show. I don't know what to do or say to a statement like that. I think it has to do with being true to oneself so you can be true to everyone else. It's not exactly a "popular" notion because it does lead to a lot of awkward moments. But also deeply reflective exchanges that flow over with love. I pray for you to find that Rip. He's out there. And, by the power of God, he is looking for you, too. Such unions are what put you on the road to Heaven. Stay well, sister.

Coming from a fatherless home growing up I found the father figure and the example of the man I wish to be in my bestfriends father, we have been through a lot together and gotten close and inseparable with his family throughout the years and then one day I was filling out a job application and needed non related references to put down so later that night I asked him at dinner if it would be ok to put him down as one of those references. He just looked at me and said "of course, youre one of mine arent you?" I had to excuse myself because I was having a hard time holding it together so the letter scene when Rip realizes that John thinks of him as a son and calls him as such hits especially hard and true. In my opinion this is one of the greatest shows ever made.

He certainly was larger than life on that scene. And I appreciated the realism when he got shot. You knew he felt it! But unlike most Hollywood, they didn't make him act like nothing was wrong, nor did he keel over like a poorly placed shot is lethal. He was a proper warrior in that scene.
