Mini Biography by IMDb: www.imdb.com/na...
Stephen Stucker was a marvelously wild and dynamic free-spirited actor who specialized in deliciously broad portrayals of memorably outrageous characters in a handful of comedies made in the 70's and 80's. Stucker was born on July 2, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Lincoln School in Alameda, California. During his school days Stephen was known as both an accomplished pianist and a class clown with a dry wit. Stucker made his film debut with a funny turn as crazed asylum escapee Bruce Wilson in the entertainingly lowbrow "Carnal Madness." He was likewise sidesplitting as a cross-dressing court stenographer in "The Kentucky Fried Movie." Stephen achieved his greatest enduring popularity with his gloriously zany and unforgettable performance as loopy airport control room worker Johnny in the hilarious disaster picture parody "Airplane!." Stucker reprised this role in "Airplane II: The Sequel" and had an amusing bit as a train stationmaster in "Trading Places." Stephen appeared in three episodes of the hit TV series "Mork & Mindy." Besides "The Kentucky Fried Movie" and "Airplane!," Stucker also worked with the comedy team of Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker as a member of the theatrical group the Kentucky Fried Theater. Stephen Stucker died at the tragically young age of 38 from AIDS on April 13, 1986.

The wonderful gag is that, no matter how flamboyant Johnny is, none of the gritty men who surround him notice him. he gasps and giggles and prances and whoops and people are totally oblivious to him.

It's more that they just don't notice it as anything out of the ordinary.....That's in line with early ZAZ humor of characters reacting nonchalantly to the craziness around them. I think the Police Squad series worked better than Naked Gun for that reason since Leslie Nielsen plays it serious like Dr. Rumack here in spite of all the ridiculousness going on, but they turned him into the joke and made him a bumbling fool like Inspector Clouseau for the movies.

@@starwarsrebel2006 Just curious: Are you old enough to remember the beginning of the AIDS crisis? At first, there was a lot of fear about how it was contracted. The masses wondered if it could be spread through touch, by becoming airborne, by mosquito, etc. Citizens lived in fear. (Actually, we could use a bit of that "fear" [I'd prefer respect] when it comes to COVID-19, but I digress.) Once it became evident only gay men got AIDS (which was just as untrue as the touch/airborne/mosquito hypotheses), Ronald Reagan *_ignored_* its existence and refused to fund research. Getting AIDS was an automatic death sentence. We have made a lot of progress since then. When you say we've made some progress, but not a lot, I have to wonder if you lived through the part where AIDS killed 100% of the time. Now, if you're speaking about undeveloped countries, you have a damn good point. Africa has a much worse AIDS problem than the United States ever did and they can't offer proper treatment. I have diabetes. One of my doctors told me he'd rather have AIDS than diabetes. Both diseases can be managed, but he thinks it's harder to manage diabetes. That's just one man's opinion and I don't know if I agree because I don't have AIDS. I can't compare / contrast. I'm not even sure a person with both maladies could do so because having both might exacerbate one over the other. That said: you know the U.S. has made a lot of progress if a doctor would choose AIDS. It's no longer a death sentence, at least in developed countries. Going back to Africa: The AIDS epidemic is a travesty. I'm not even sure how the world could conquer AIDS, even if we could all get on the same page, which doesn't seem likely. If anything, we're all becoming more entrenched in our little bubbles.

Simply one of the funniest characters to grace the silver screen. Delightfully manic and zany. I love every moment of his comedy shenanigans. Was Airplane the funniest movie ever? Stephen Stucker as Johnny was a fantastic cameo...so totally gay and mad cap and loveable. Again, that 1980s decade was especially cruel to Aids sufferers with few drugs and not a little prejudice at every level. Victims like Stephen now shine through like beacons of humanity. You know, with more time he could have reprised that character in so many comedies and films. Great compilation.

This has been a longtime favorite, and now, at age 44, I'm just noticing that one of the microphones in the first scene is a chocolate ice cream cone.

Every time you watch the movie you catch something you didn't notice before. I remember my sister taking me to see this in the theater when I was 11. I sure picked up a lot more that I missed when I got older.

Damn On July 12, 1984, Stucker was diagnosed with AIDS. He later publicly announced his illness, making him one of the first actors to announce he was suffering from the disease. Stucker had apparently suffered from many different types of cancer-related symptoms as early as 1979, prior to public knowledge of what AIDS was. He claimed to have used needles, and had transfusions.[2] He died from AIDS-related complications on April 13, 1986 at the age of 38. He is interred in the Chapel of the Chimes.

In 1980, he was a horrible person with Jerry Falwell’s followers and the like. Today he’d barely put a smile on woke young people’s faces. Everybody in between, he’d have them howling with laughter.
