K L Saigal or Kundan Lal Saigal is a legend in Indian Playback and semi classical history. This album is a rare compilation of Hits Of K L Saigal from Bengali Film Songs as well as some marvelous Rabindra Sangeet or Tagore Songs sung by K L Saigal in super duper hit films like Parichaya and Devdas.
Saigal was a born talent and he started singing at a very early age. In his prolific career K L Saigal has sang and acted in a number of Hindi Films. The most notable of them was Pramathesh Chandra Barua's adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Devdas. K L Saigal has delivered enormous number of hit songs for various films like Devdas, Shjehan, President, Bhakt Surdas, Parichaya and Tansen to name a few. His song " Jab dil hi toot gaya" from the film shahjehan directed by A.R. Kardar which released in 1946 is still held as one of the most passionate songs sung with ethos in the history of hindi film music. K L Saigal carried the beacon of the Golden Era when New Theatre productions bloomed in their full glory. Saigal's association with New Theatres continued to bear fruit in the successful films Didi (Bengali), President (Hindi) in 1937, Desher Mati (Bengali), Dharti Mata (Hindi) in 1938, Saathi (Bengali), Street Singer (Hindi) in 1938, Dushman (1939), and Zindagi in 1940, with Saigal in the lead. Many Bengali Film Songs from the stable of Hits Of K L Saigal are compiled in this album along with some mesmerizing Rabindra Sangeet tracks like Aji Khela Bhangar Khela and Ektuku Chhonwa Lagey.
There are a number of songs of this era which form the rich heritage of film music in India. Another film which became a legend was the prithvi raj Kapoor starer "The President" which was directed by Nitin Bose and was released in the year 1937. Saigal sang the legendary song Ek Bangla Bane Nyara for this superhit film. Sadly Saigal died at a very early age of 42 owing to his over fondness for alcohol. In a career of fifteen years, Saigal acted in 36 feature films - 28 in Hindi, seven in Bengali, and one in Tamil. In 1955, B.N. Sircar released a documentary film based on the life of K.L. Saigal, Amar Saigal. In the film, G. Mungheri performed the title role of Saigal. The film contained 19 songs lifted from Saigal's films. In all, Saigal rendered 185 songs which includes 142 film songs and 43 non-film songs.Saigal's distinctive singing was revered and idolized by the first generation of post-independence Hindi Film playback singers, including Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi and Mukesh.
This compilation also has some Hit Bengali Film Songs of K L Saigal such as Ekhoni Uthibey Chaand. Overall this classic oldies album soaked in nostalgia is a delightful listen.

এটা ঠিক সায়গল সাহেবের গাওয়া এই গান গুলি সবটাই রবীন্দ্রসঙ্গীত তা নয়। বেশকিছু গান কমল দাসগুপ্তের। কিন্তু যে অপূর্ব সুরেলা কন্ঠে উনি গেয়েছেন,আজকের সময়ে ভাবলে অবাক হয়ে যেতে হয়। আর একটা বৈশিষ্ট্য হলো, সায়গলের বাংলা গানে পঙ্কজ মল্লিকের প্রভাব স্পষ্ট। তার কারণ অধিকাংশ গানের পরিচালনায় পঙ্কজ মল্লিক স্বয়ং সায়গলের সঙ্গী হিসেবে ছিলেন।

বাংলা বা হিন্দি গানে এবং অভিনয়ে কে এল সাইগল এর অবদান সম্পর্কে কোন প্রশ্নই ওঠে না , যদিও এটি ব্যক্তিগত মত । তবে শর্মিষ্ঠা দেবী যে প্রশ্নটি উত্থাপন করেছেন তা সঙ্গত । রবীন্দ্র সঙ্গীত এবং অন্যান্য সঙ্গীতগুলি আলাদা করে দেখানোটাই উচিত হত । আর একটি বিষয় উল্লেখযোগ্য যে সিনেমায় কন্দন লাল সাইগলের গানে রাই চাঁদ বড়ালের বিশেষ ভূমিকার কথা সূচনায় উল্লেখিত হয়নি । শ্রদ্ধেয় রাই চাঁদ বড়ালকে সম্ভাষণ করা হয় Father of Hindi songs অভিধায় । আগ্রহীগণ গুগল সার্চ করলে পেয়ে যাবেন ।
