Pan fishing is ultimately a sensitivity game. Plain and simple it’s an absolute must to have a no stretch, zero memory line and braid is that line! Yes, you’re action will change and all of that with braid. Lower the poundage on the braided line to #3-4 test add swivel to fluorocarbon leader(#2-3 test) that has minimal to no stretch and you’ve gained the ultimate in sensitivity! Everyone has something to say about ice build up in extreme weather. When you fish your rod tip very close to your hole it becomes an after thought! Just my 2 cents 😉

Spot on!!!! I have used 4lb Fireline Crystal for years in gin-clear strip pits and have caught panfish all day. Most of this is a marketing ploy the industry has created....

All these guys use something different as it depends on the weather conditions, shanty or no, lure type, depth, experience, and opinion. You can catch fish with any line made for ice fishing, there's no absolutes or best line. Braid with a swivel and a fluoro leader can work but it's a pain to tie and the swivel is useless when it freezes.

@@TheDoughboy6373 do you use a leader with the fireline crystal?
@mattschwartz9153 жыл бұрын
remember, most of these guys are sponsored by line manufacturers. Fluorocarbon makes those companies way higher profits than mono does. A pro staff budget will likely be a percentage of sales or a percentage of profits. So no matter which lines the pros actually like the best, it is in their direct interest to promote the products that produce the best sales/profits for their sponsors. My concern is a couple of the pros suggesting fluoro has less stretch than mono. That is simply false and you can find plenty of test data on the web proving that fluoro and mono stretch about the same.

i recently landed a 17 lb 2 oz 41" northern on my cheapo 13 fishing micro light pole with 6lb power pro braid with 2lb micro ice leaderbout 3ft long with a blood knot connection with a 1/16 oz forage minnow while chasing panfish. she fully spooled me twice and took damn near 20 min to get her on the ice. point of story (other than bragging,im pretty proud) im now a devoted power pro ice braid and the micro ice im convinced is made of magic.

sambone 101 i think p-line, suffix, trilene, fireline can all perform the close to the same. It was just all your skill :) sounds like you had a heart pounding high adrenaline moment.

@@HuyFishin ya it was a freaking hoot. I was trying to find someone to come see but I was the only one at the pond. I'm not to serious about the line though,I'm more of a floro leader guy, I was just impressed it held up. Generally I run the ten lb power pro and 4 or 6 lb vanish. The Berkley was just on sale so I got a bunch of the smaller stuff. Dumb luck and a careful fight.

Berkley trilene micro ice. Super strong very sensitive. 4 lb test can do a lot of different things with it.

Stren Gold and Cortland colored line in the past. Present, I ordered some Daiwa Line from overseas in pink basically to try and my eye's have gotten so bad to re-tie. So far the Daiwa line(maybe it's made by another line manufacture???) has been pretty good as far as rating it. It's strong, subtle but not as easy to see or detect bites as a yellow colored line for me. Would like to try Northland Tackles Bionic one of these days if they made it in a colored line and Suffix Advanced Supplement(think that's what it's called, but new out for Suffix) if again they make it in a colored line and lighter pound test. Sunline is another line in the future I may give a try, but need to use up what I have first!!! Most of the time I'm looking for active panfish and if they are active it doesn't matter to me what kind of brand name line I'm using. Having one break off me off here and there is just part of the enjoyment of fishing unless your fishing competitively. I don't like the experiences I've had or seen others using braided lines or even fused lines because of what DG mentioned and also if you get a burrs nest and knots you can't get out you basically have to cut the line(if you just happen to have something with you that will cut it) and start over. Plus with braided lines and fused lines they're generally more expensive to purchase. Fluorocarbon lines unless you want a more abrasive line and stiffer line there's really no advantage to having invisible line that is being used under a blanket of snow/ice in a world mostly of darkness to the fishes eye's, but some seem to like the properties Fluorocarbon lines have so "Kudos" to those who like using it for ice fishing for panfish. Also if I had to use a barrel swivel to connect my braided line to a leader it would be just another object for panfish to bite at like when biting at a split shot used above your lure/bait. Lastly, with braided lines becoming more popular with finesse fishing and the amount of water it absorbs why would one want to be out in -20 degree weather using braided line and not in your shack? Thinking it's an advantage using braided line in those temperature situations you have to have a real tolerance for cold weather if your braving the elements by fishing out in the open. I still add a split shot sometimes when fishing deeper water depending on my lure size, but can always adjust that split shot so when reeling a fish in it isn't hitting my first guide on my rod. I use mostly UL wimpy rods with light tips for panfish and monofilament line's have served the purpose in my many years of ice fishing. I'm not a biggie putting new line on every season if I mentally remember how much I've fished and used that line the prior seasons and how I've kept my rod rigs stored during a season and stored in a darker/cooler environment off season. Testing the break strength every season before ice fishing by hand generally gives a person a heads up if it's time to change your line out. Apologizes to be long winded, had nothing better to do before bedtime and fishing line's in general have always had my interest.
