That fin on the bottom is a turn fin. Hydros are designed to make right turns only. Thats the reason it turn better one direction then the other.

The fin on the bottom of the right sponson is called a turn fin and is used on racing RC boats that race in a clockwise direction. This boat is designed to turn right at high speed. I used to race RC boats. Full sized boats race counterclockwise. Just a little friendly info for the next time you take the boat out on the water.

Fun fact: the “Turn fin” is actually called a “skid fin” in the full scale! I’ve always wondered why RC hydros go the opposite way. Why is that?

@@aerospacematt9147 Many years ago I was told that it was due to the direction of prop rotation that helped the hydro's turn better when they raced clockwise. Back then we only had nitro powered boats so they were designed to rotate the prop CCW. This helped the rear of the boat move left and make better right turns. This was before electric power existed.

I bought this boat back in June and after flipping it once on my first time out, the steering servo lost all it's teeth! However, I friggin LOVE this boat! I replaced the servo with a $30 one from Amazon that is all metal teeth, waterproof and 35kg , all is good now. This is a super fast boat when u get into the tuning part of it. If you lower the strut, its even faster! It's essentially trimming the boat. But it does get unsteady if u over do it, so be careful! I've hit 67 with mine so far with no motor, prop or esc upgrades, and its stable at that speed so I know I can trim it more. Have fun boaters! And of you're in the Michigan, lake st clair area, I hope to see u on the water! P.S. you didn't tighten the cover enough, but boat tape is a must for that boat, because when u do flip it, without tape it will take on water. It's a long cover and could use 2 more screws in the middle to hold it down watertight

Nice, an actual Hydroplane! This is what real boat racing is all about. Seattle, as well as a number of other cities have annual Unlimited Hydroplane races going back to WW2 era. These boat racers would take the giant Merlin engines from warbirds and put them in boats.

I’ve had this boat for almost a year and have had a lot of fun ripping it across the water. I’ve overheated it a few times and it’s taken it’s toll but it’s still running strong so far. Original servo will probably strip gears but it’s easy to replace with metal geared servo. Other than that always make sure motor is perfectly aligned with the flex shaft and stuffing tube because it will shift because of vibrations.

Its crazy how far r/c model has come in the last 20 years. I used to run a tunnel boat rc that my uncle built and ran nitro with a k&b 3.5 n 7.5 liter outboard engines. When I go play or race at a local pond that we ran at I seen alot of this style boat, not electric all nitro. Last time I ran electric stuff was just kicking off and they was running as fast or faster nitro boats. I been thinking about buying one of these boats. Thank you for help making my decision. I think I'm going to get one, run the 6s and the other 4s. Thanks again

Try raising the strut about a mm to see if that fixes the slow takeoff issue. Someone else said to lower it for more speed. Basically, it needs some tuning. Check out Ironclad RC. He has a playlist for this boat with tuning suggestions.

You have to have a smaller prop to run 6s or it will melt the electronics. You will need quite a bit of experience or learn very quick when owning this one. But overall its a very solid rtr boat if you stick to 4s.

6S seemed okay today, but we also let off the throttle a good bit and that probably helped keep things cool. I imagine cliff we were full throttle the entire time it would have gotten warmer! Thanks for the pro tip 👍😎⚓️

Nice boat. Speedy! I smoothed out my prop and that reduced cavitation when I punch it. Have you tried that yet? The prop is nice, but there were a few small bumps and it needed smoothing with emery cloth. Pretty easy to do when you have the prop and cable out for cleaning and grease.

Being primarily an airplane guy, I took the plunge and bought one of their jet boats. [they call it a river boat] that uses a 5000ma 3c. My son lives on a pond that is about a third of a mile around. The first time I used 100% power on this thing I almost buried it in the opposing shore before I could shut it down. Didn't expect that! The manufacturer claims 40mph. If so, that is the fastest 40mph I have experienced. Now I want something like your boat. Keep up the good work kids.

Nice boat! YES You need to upgrade the ESC to a 150a and install the kit for a Dual Pickup Rudder for 6s or you will melt the electronics, as mentioned below. Its called a turn fin and its mounted on that side for right turns. You might want to try a curved one with 6s speed. Learn about balancing and sharpening stock props for a dryer, faster boat. You are not far off plank boy...the front wing is actually called a canard! On the pro and rc pro level hand-made boats, its adjustable.

You guys do no thats a right hand turn boat because of the turn fin and you can turn at full throttle just not a sharp turn it has to be a welder turn. I have a UL-19 with a bigger curved turn fin installed you would be amazed how it stays planted in the water at full throttle on 6s and straight as a Aero. On 6S you can run about 45 seconds before the motor speak control wires to them or over 200° that should’ve been brought up. You cannot run this on 6s with the stock prop without melting equipment out of the boat maiden voyage on our end seven laps on normal course. 200 degrees.

The full size versions of these formula boats literally fly using ground effect just above the water and that front stabilizer is actually a wing that helps them keep the front end down so it doesn't flip away or get too high up and lose the ground effect. Those boats technically more fly than they do float.

They use the water more than the ground effect. In order to use ground effect, you can’t be touching the ground. These boats still touch the water, with the sponsons and the bottom half of the propeller.

@@aerospacematt9147the front wing is active and articulates so they can modulate the lift increasing or reducing depending on the need. These boats don't only use ground effect only but do use it in order to go faster and faster safely. No, they do not use the ground effect like an airplane or a GEV like the USSR's Lun-Class Ekranoplan. But they do take full advantage of the lift and downforce gained through using fluid dynamics of air and water that are being used at the extremes of what technology can do at the moment. I think we all can appreciate that.

@@jonlamontagne Yes, the “canard wing” They do carry air from the front to the back, but the wing’s main purpose is to keep the boat from “flipping”. It works if you do it right, but if you hit a wave the wrong way, you’ll still blow over. The water is what supports it when it’s “on plane” but yes, the air does flow through underneath and the hull is designed to provide some lift. Oh yeah, they are pretty sophisticated compared to the 1950s/60s “shovel nose” hydros. My dad actually used to race them back in the 90s albeit in the “limited” classes but his 2nd one did have an articulating canard.

The plug on a boat is to remove water and as long as ya dont have a whole family in it, You unplug it then drive fast for a minute, plug it back in and it works better than a builge pump cause it literally gets sucked out the back

All the fellow in the bass boat needed to do was run it, and the watter will be "sucked" out the back of the boat, and then have someone reach over and install the drain plug.

Yes, Renfrew Pro polyflex clear hockey “sock” tape is hard to beat for sealing hatches. It is a little rubbery so it conforms to curves better than packing tape. $4 per 75 ft roll on amazon. With a little care you can reuse it many times in the same day- if you dry off the tape and dry the area where it attaches between runs. But even as single use, you should get 20 runs for $4. Now I never get more than a couple of drops of water per 4 minute run... unless I use reverse, which blows water up the flex shaft tube. But when you are stuck or have weeds on the prop... push the trigger and she backs up! A couple of Reverse bursts and the weeds seem to clear. Ran mine 20x before I found that reverse function by accident. DOH!

Just to let everyone know, the fellow who forgot the plug and was taking on water, don't panic, just fire up the boat, take off and all the water will leave the boat, then put your drain plug in

I have the Ul19 2 jears & First got the 180A from Dymond... but, ( go for a deeper sword for nicer Corners, but , out of the BOX, ist a real fast & nice Boat , Hydroplane - but , look at MP5 Scale 1:5 & 1:6. HYDROPLANE -KITTS - WITH ALL VIDEOS FOR A SAVE BUILD ! , theul19 is real heavy ! , for Fun.. ok.. but at 500 € you Fan get A real pro Race Boot! ( but i Love that ul19 with the 180A upgrade-enc & 180A motor & now i got a 400A. System watercooled ! ( is your watercooling ok ? 2 h. to the Engine & 2 in esc 2 out from Enc , at first my had no 2. cooling input to the engine- but with a rudder with 2 inlets all is perfeckt ! ( some little fails in the reproduction.. so many destroyed that Boat with that 120A end.. & iam Not shure it have 120... & with that Cooling System.. hotwater in enc- 2 side enc back with hotter Water to the 2 Enc cooling chamber- more hotter !? , thats Nonsens... 200cm rubber-h. & 2 in Motor & so the Water is cool enogh to cool down the 120A enc- stock enc- but i gone for the 180 Enc & its mutch better ... ok, 400A is complet overpowerd , but funny ! ( my Friend, look for MP5 Boats! , & the videos about that Boats for real Events- all what you want to know about RC Boats- weight & Materials! .. mfG from Vienna& sorry my messi english ! 🇦🇹✌🏼
