Petsmart is a bad place to get pets but in my local petsmart I know the manager and he actually breeds snakes so their section with snakes is usually well kept and they usually have pretty healthy ball pythons and cornsnakes so I would buy one from their but other than that I wouldn't go to petco or petsmart.

@DarcBloom6 жыл бұрын
IHaveAGoodName I believe all snakes do to some degree, but feel free to correct me on that. However, it's usually only as a self defense mechanism. So if you're not antagonizing it, it should be fine.
@DarcBloom6 жыл бұрын
Ashley Taylor The temperament of an animal usually plays a direct factor in how bitey an animal is. So if someone uses words like, docile, chill, etc, usually not. Animals that are more territorial, aggressive, and moody, might. As a rule snakes can be a little moody if they're in the process of shedding, even if they're otherwise docile. BUT, you can tell that they are, because of their eye color; if it's more of a light blue, grey, or otherwise cloudy, that's a protective layer they build on their eyes to protect them from being irritated during shed. So if the color is more dull than normal, that's a good sign. Just respect their space during that time and it'll be all right. Some can be moody if they're in heat, too, but snakes usually have pretty clear body language, and will usually resort to other things as a warning, before biting. Like, false-strikes, hissing, or simply evading you. Also, even if a snake DOES bite, as long as you stay calm and remove the teeth straight from the wound (not trying to pull it across), it won't be too bad. Most snakes, and especially constrictors such as boas, are not venomous, and the snakes that are, usually have a venom that's very mild to humans. If you hear people wigging out about bites, it's usually because of stereotypes about snakes being venomous, the venom being deadly, etc. And while that's true for some, it's not true for all, and usually not true for recommended pet breeds. That's another thing: Pet snakes are not wild snakes, and are bred in captivity, so they're generally not as hostile or dangerous as those that ARE wild. It's like... comparing a house cat to a wild tiger or leopard.

Typically, animals don't make a big deal about slight changes in body odor, whether it be farting, sweating, or a bit of cologne. The part of your smell they recognize, are the base pheromones, which don't change regardless of other applications. If anything, animals seem MORE interested in sniffing a person if they just farted, perhaps because it releases some of those pheromones with it.

@mollykelday7 жыл бұрын
It's just muscle.
@DarcBloom6 жыл бұрын
It's the jaw muscles they use. Typically when a snake is devouring its prey/food, their jaws unhinge at the joints, and they're mostly using the muscle in their heads and mouths to sort of inch-wiggle their way along it, until it's fully in.

Nice video but if your going to keep a snake in a large aquarium like you said they need plenty of hiding places. Snakes get extremely stressed out when they feel exposed. I breed ball pythons and burmese pythons and I typically keep my adult female ball pythons in tubs that are about the size of a 30 gallon tank but at the same time they are in a rack so they feel nice and cozy because the heat is built in and they feel like they are hidden because it stays nice and dark, but since most people don't have that kind of equipment and like to have fancy set up for your beloved pets your advice would be just fine ☺

Royal Python or Ball Python ( Downside they can be abit moody about feeding) Columbian Rainbow Boa ( Humidity is very IMPORTANT do research but can be a alright beginner) King Snakes Milk Snakes Corn Snakes Rat Snakes Are all good beginner snakes as long as you do your research.

My opinion is, ball pythons are fatter and to kids look "cooler" and are easy to just put somewhere and leave it for 5 minutes so it would be better for young children who don't have responsibility for a pet. However corn snakes are longer and more slender, they move quicker and are diurnal . They would be good for someone who has the responsibility of keeping a more active snake and can take them out more . I can't say the fact that corn and kings are more nippy and hard to tame is true though because that was the opposite of what happened when I had bought them as babies.
@littleferret28 жыл бұрын
oliver dibbs baby snakes are always a bit nippy, honestly to avoid all that it's easier to get a semi adult snake that is already past that.
@jeremiahdelacruz70057 жыл бұрын
oliver dibbs I wouldn't personally recommend a bp to a small kid since they do get a bit more heavier and also since they need a bit higher humidity than other beginner snakes

I have a 20 gallon tank from my former pet bearded dragon who recently passed. Will that do for a ball python or corn snake? I want something really simple to take care of. I was told i needed to get a humidifier or spray the snake with water constantly is that true?
@xv4n35547 жыл бұрын
Jordan Chiu A 20 gallon tank can work since it is the minimum size for ball pythons and corn snakes. And yes sometimes you will have to spray the tank with water or use a humidifier if the humidity is not up between %50-%60, but usually a large water bowl helps with the humidity.

Feed it once a month
@sarahholness5968 жыл бұрын
+E “Killman348” first you said not to feed them once a month now you do, you right there? It depends on the certain snake and its behaviour. Like Tyler said, ball pythons tend to go off their food

how do you know when a snake is hungry?
@littleferret28 жыл бұрын
Just feed them every 5-10 days and you'll never have a problem with the snake being hungry.
@ayvergraham21248 жыл бұрын
thank you I wasn't sure. So when the BPs stop eating will they just leave the food there?

DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT LAST COMMENT. That is complete misinformation. You will know if a snake is hungry based on their body language and very quick tongue flicks when food is present. NEVER EVER remove the animal from its enclosure before feedings, that's the easiest way to get your hand mistaken for food. ALWAYS use feeding tongs to present the food item to the snake. If they seem uninterested in the food they will not strike at it, and their body language will not change when food is presented. If they are not hungry then try feeding them again in 7 days. Ball Pythons are notorious for being picky eaters and it is currently breeding season for most snake species, if your BP is a male then he will remain uninterested in food for many months because he wants to breed a female. Keep him away from females if you want him to go back on food sooner. Monitor his weight weekly to make sure it stays consistent, if his weight drops significantly while he's off food take him to a vet or to your local reptile breeder and have him either assist fed or force fed (a professional will know what those terms mean and what to do.) If your snake is female then ignore all I have said about males and breeding season and continue to offer the animal food every week. Like I said before, BP's are notorious for being picky eaters, try adjusting their enclosures humidity levels, tempurature, give them more water, a hide and make sure they are being fed INSIDE their enclosure. If you are worried about being bitten when it is not feeding time and you go to pick the animal up then take the opposite end of the feeding tongs and run it against their back, if the animal acts like its hungry (body language change) then GENTLY tap the tongs against the animals head. Repeatedly doing this will teach the animal that now is not feeding time and to not strike. If the animal hisses at you when you attempt to pick it up (this is different from heavy breathing, their mouth will be open) leave the animal in it's enclosure and try handling them again the next day.
