Nice review Matt. Just back from a Shark test drive. Boy it’s so quiet, easy to thread through traffic and narrow openings. The bonnet gives you a very good idea of the width of the car. Nice acceleration and the premium feeling from the drivers seat belies its price. Liked the ride, my test car had the regen set to high. It drove like a compact car even though you tower over a Model Y. Have one on order from early November. Feel very relieved after the test drive. More impressive and refined than I could have imagined.

Will be adding a Sealion 7 when they are released and happy wiht the BYDs so far. One small issue with the Seal but fixed itself. Quality and reliabilty has been great for 20k kms and one year. Quick, quiet, roomy, well built, and cheap as chips. Value is outstanding. Was at the launch of these BYDs in China and loved the Shark. A dozen issue with pre producrion cars will be fixed for consumer cars when deliveries start. Driven several and its faster than the Raptor, quieter, better built, and more comfortable ride. Take it over the Ford any day. When Denza and Yang Wang (BYD brands) make it to our shores, ill be lining up for the Yang Wang U8 820KW and a few Denza models should we get them. The Chinese are so far ahead in China in terms of quality, tech, autonomous driving and overall in general than legacy makers its not even funny. Give then 5 years and they will be everywhere. And ill agree the BYDs bave the absolute best voice control system of any car ive owned. Better than a Range Rover Autobiography and a 2022 BMW 7 series. Its a amazing what it can do.

Most days we travel on a busy north-south coastal highway and it is full of Utes burning fuel and blocking their dpf’s during peak-hour. Once people try the Shark and realise what it can do for their unnecessary fuel consumption (money much better spent on fishing tackle, flights to Bali, beer, surfboards darts etc) they will realise the extra $30-40k on outdated Ranger, Hilux, Amarok is ludicrous.

What state of charge was the battery to achieve 9 L/100 around town? Did the vehicle also consume battery charge during your drive? Some more detail on this would be helpful. Hybrids are different, and how they are used and charged will be the difference between zero fuel use and 14L/100 that Carsales claimed it achieved (which I would say is a complete misrepresentation of the facts given what they did to achieve that result, and now idiots are quoting it...)
@MotoGuzziMoto21 сағат бұрын
Some other questions. In hybrid mode, when does the engine run? Does it give you a largish electric range before starting the engine for the first time (or can you configure it that way)? When the engine does start, does it get a chance to warm up fully (what is the sustained temperature)? Will the engine run periodically (say every 7 days) to burn off moisture buildup in the engine if you are only running on battery? On a steep descent, what can it achieve in regen in kws? Can it start the engine to assist deceleration (a feature useful when towing)? Can it sustain 50kw charge rate till full? At what charge can you disable the engine over 70kph? This is important if you have a short freeway commute to work and want to stay on battery, even at low charge. Will the engine run to top up the battery while stationary? under what conditions? I'll stop there. You can see hybrids are different and there is a lot of info to share about them.

My understanding is that the battery never fully depletes, rather it reaches a minimum state of charge and then uses the battery + the engine to power the car and keep the battery at that SOC. To answer your question properly, I'd dare say it can do. Will it keep doing it on a daily basis, probably not, but occasional trips like this should be ok. For example, my daily driver, an xtrail with lower power and torque figures allowed me to tow a 1900kg caravan with relative ease when travelling from Adelaide to Hanhdorf
@jbh276116 сағат бұрын
Heard a guy say that going up mountains in Mexico with his New Shark ( not towing ) that the battery and motor struggled a bit ( only got slower speed ) because the driving required constant torque going up hill and difficult to keep up a constant charge , he stated to over come this problem was to set the battery level for regen at about 60% instead of the factory setting of 25% , keeping more juice in reserve for required torque .

Generic brands don't cost all that much. Don't forget they high in depreciation may be 50% or more in the first few years. Any spare parts in the futures? Will the started up new company really care about after sale service for the consumer? Generally ones must think carefully and wisely before putting hard earn money in buying. There are lots of abandoned vehicles parked along road kerbside, because of no parts and expensive repairs, and more. I'd just not rush in for a litttle while, be on a safe side.

Good to see another “review” of the Shark but why can’t all these channels (including CarExpert, Car Sales et al) bring themselves to say the quiet part out loud? i.e. that they are all inherently Toyota/Ford biased and anti-anything made in China. The Shark will compete on its own merits against Hilux, Ranger, Triton, DMax, Canon Alpha and those making up the numbers with sales, customer experience and after sales service ultimately deciding which is the better package.

For the benefit of all non- Australian viewers, when you hear the man saying "Australia's most XXXX", he does not mean the car is Australian, rather, he only means "In Australia, it is the most XXX". Sorry for the confusion. It is a rather peculiar habit of Aussies; you see, when you do not manufacture any thing at the moment, calling something Australia's is a way of compensation. The car is Chinese made.

People buy diesel utes because of their towing capacity. If an ute can provide a similar towing performance while being free from the DPF trouble, the order will be heaps of.

@sed940612 сағат бұрын
I don't think the tester knew how to tune the usage patterns of electric pickups. The most important point is that turning traction control off is useless and should be turned to sand mode.

No mention of the petrol range? What happens if you run out of petrol and you're low on electricity? How do you plug a 12v accessory in the tray? All of these reviews feel the exact same to me, are you given a script? list of things you can and cannot talk about? I might put an order in a year or 2 from now when real people drive it. Looks good and all, but it feels too fishy so far. Also the hill climb thingy is concerning, I have been in steeper hill with a camper trailer before, that would be a bummer to be stuck with 4T of gear lol
@maddawg9116Күн бұрын
You fill it back up like a ICE vehicle. The hill climb was reviewed by a noob mate, he didn't even test sand mode . Best to wait for real user experience review. The first batch to be delivered to customers is around mid Jan and you'll get a clearer picture on the BYD shark.
