Basically, the theme of a lot of these wins, and a lot of historical Best Picture winners, is that the Academy decided to pick the safe choice, rather than something truly inventive.

I’d actually rank 12 Years A Slave first. It’s a better movie than Gravity. Oscars aren’t given out based on “repeatability,” so it matters not which films you’d prefer to see again. See: Schindler’s List. Unbelievably amazing film, but I’ll never watch it again. Waaay too horrific. As for Green Book, it deserves the 10th slot. Sanitized, white savior narrative. Id’ve much preferred Blackkklansman.

The Academy members psych themselves out every year. They buy the BS narrative that a movie is truly great, but can't win an Oscar and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Parasite is a remarkable film. The social commentary. The symbolism. I love how neither the rich family or poor family were 100% good or bad. What I love most about Parasite is that you can ask several people what their interpretations are, and you’ll get several different answers. What art should be.

Greenbook situation was like every academy member probably think that Roma will win best picture. So they were like “Oh why dont I just vote a movie that no way will win but still safe (good)”. And boom Green Book Won 😂
@dj71162
@dj71162 2 ай бұрын
Or it won based on averages and the preferential ballot method they currently use. Its where voters rank the films in order of preference, and since Green Book is just okay, it on the basis of averages, was able to win. I doubt it was many people's number one outright! I would rather they just go back to the old way of whichever films got the most votes wins.

@dj71162 the preferential ballot definitely helped it. As much as many loved Roma some people were also unable to sit through it and found it boring. So the least disliked movie won, i.e., Green Book. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, they didn't know which one to choose and they all decided to vote for a film that they thought it would never win. Well, thank god, they learned from their mistakes and decided to choose unconventional films after that (Parasite, Nomadland, CODA, Everything Everywhere All At Once...) I think that Oppenheimer was the most conventional film who won these last five years. I hope they choose wisely too next year.

Parasite is the true monumental Best Picture winner that ever happened at the Oscars, and the next 4 Best Picture winners after Parasite are all solid (yes, including CODA, it is a wonderful film and a miracle Best Picture winner). I'd say it's not a bad winner at all. I honestly think people underrate it when it's actually underrated. 'Spotlight' on the other hand, I liked it first time around, but when I rewatched in lockdown it kinda felt generic and that it rode the wave of its subject matter and not the film making.

I have always felt bad for Moonlight. That evening when they finally came up on stage it was like a deflated balloon due to the mix-up. Now, whenever anyone talks about Moonlight it is usually in relation to the Oscars Mishap. That win will always have the screw-up at the oscars as a shadow. Moonlight deserves better than always being associated with that mess.

I really love your spoiler-free movie reviews, your collaborations (especially Cody: I hope that that relationship is going to happen due to your electrifying chemistry 😉) and of course everything Oscar you do (rankings, predictions, essays and analysis). Whether I come home from a rave, sleeping over at someone I just met or going out alone to dinner: Your videos and you are always with me (due to looking at your work on my mobile device). That's quite a kind of one-sided intimate relationship as you don't know me but I know a lot from you 😉 You can be proud of yourself that you reached as far as Vienna, Austria with your work ;) Becoming here a TV friend for a European flamboyant middle-aged gay man (I'm 2 years older than you 😉): It's nice to have you in my life, you are welcome anytime to be invited in every time you bring out a new video 👍🏾: Thank you for being a TV friend 📺😉🫶🏼 As this comments is longer than expected I'll write another one for my Best Picture ranking 🏆👍🏾

Everyone I know who likes jazz hates Whiplash, and maybe that's because this film wasn't nominated for Best Picture in 2015. It was criticised for the unrealistic and sensational portrayal of jazz musicians, and people working in the music industry didn't like it very much. Edit: "wasn't nomited for Best Director." Please revisit Spotlight. It is so underrated in its filmmaking/storytelling, & the subject material still outrages me all these years later. Its biggest strength is letting the impact of TELL hit so hard in the gut--no big bells or whistles, no slow zoom-ins, no DUN-DUN-DUNNN motifs in the score. It's just heart wrenching in its overall simplicity, which is hard to find nowadays.

This is one of my favorite movies of that decade. I studied journalism, and one of the great achievements of "Spotlight" is how it follows the investigative team along, as they practice the best journalistic techniques and we uncover the scope of the horror right along with them. It's not sensationalized, which makes the real pain of people affected by this abuse hit even harder. The cast is so solid; kudos to Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams. It contains one of my most loved performances from Mark Ruffalo, and my favorite performances to date from Stanley Tucci and Liev Schreiber. Brian needs to watch this one again.

Spotlight is also one of my favorites! Probably because I’m a historian and there are so few films that make research look like the intense experience it can be. And the performances are so real! I love how the screenplay depicts their personal struggles with the issues, especially when people question why the journalists didn't pay attention to it before. There are a lot of moral and ethical questions raised by the screenplay that I don't think get enough appreciation.

One positive thing came from the Green Book's win: after that fiasco (probably no one knew which film to choose, they were undecided and chose the option they thought it didn't stand a chance), the Academy started making bolder choices. I mean, Parasite, Nomadland, CODA, Everything Everywhere All at Once... Oppenheimer might be the most conventional win of these last few years, and anyone who saw the film know that it is not, by all means, a conventional film. I hope they choose their winner wisely this next year! 2024 brought us great films! Imagine if they give the Best Picture Oscar to a bland film...

My ranking 10. Green Book- The less I say about this, the better... I might get angry again 9. The Artist- Some interesting artistry and craftsmanship on show, but never really connected with it. 8. The King's Speech- Not the strongest movie its year, but thats not what i am ranking it against. I think Firth, Rush and Bonham-Carter were great. 7. Argo- It was a fine movie, I thought the ending was awesome, the rest..... ok? Goodman & Arkin raise its ranking to here..... 6. Spotlight- The subject matter was strong, just that I felt the movie never rose to its level. I still love the performances and do not mind the win 5. Birdman- Solid movie. Some people love this movie, for me, it was akin to 'trying too much". Love Keaton and Stone in it. 4. The Shape of Water- I know it's not everyones cup of tea, but I love the poetry/production value /filmaking used here. 3. 12 Years A Slave- Steve McQueen (when at the top of his game) knows how to keep your eyes on screen, even when you'd rather not. 2. Moonlight- That scene in the Kitchen at the end of Act 1, the parallels of Little/Chiron/Black in those 3 points of his life. Sublime Filmaking. Love, love Moonlight 1, Parasite- Excellent. No notes!

10. The Artist -- A good, charming, fun movie, but beyond its artistic gimmicks, the story is a little flat. 9. Green Book -- Neither its story nor its artistic merits are best picture worthy at all, but I still think its surprisingly fun and entertaining from start to finish. 8. Spotlight -- Narratively and ideologically engaging, with lots of great info, though I felt like the characters were too underexplored for me to really connect. 7. The King's Speech -- Really solid first half, with some truly great moments toward the middle, but although never bad, the second act falls off some and misses its potential. 6. Argo -- The first half is a bit slapdash and silly, but still fun. The second half has really great tension, albeit way too....Hollywoody... 5. 12 Years a Slave -- Some parts drag on beyond their narrative value, but still a really great and affecting production that I've always remembered. 4. The Shape of Water -- Directing and production design is through the roof, and although it's sometimes a bit cluttered, it's a surprisingly authentic ode to love and freedom. 3. Birdman -- A wild, risky, stylistically kinetic film that really cuts to the heart of the waning artist. 2. Moonlight -- Part 2 feels a bit rushed, and Part 3 needs more development, but it's a marvelous work of art, beautifully shot and directed, a remarkable triumph of identity. 1. Parasite -- Among the best movies ever made, it holds absolutely nothing back with its ferocious creativity and social commentary. My ideal picks... 2010: The Social Network 2011: Drive 2012: The Hunt 2013: Prisoners 2014: Gone Girl 2015: Mad Max: Fury Road 2016: Arrival 2017: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MI 2018: A Star Is Born / The Favourite 2019: Parasite

"The King's Speech" was in the '80s model of "good movie." It felt throwback in a good way, but that's not enough for the 2010s. Performances, costumes, set design, and soundtrack are all solid.

My top 10 of 2010s Best Picture winners: 10: The Kings Speech: I remember the first time I tried to watch this movie I just turned it off because it just felt so slow and lethargic. On a second viewing though I felt like it sort of worked. The acting was good as were the characters and story but the pacing was just so non-existent making it such a non-presence for me. 5/10. 9: Green Book: I get your views and it definitely has an icky vibe but for me as I sat with it for the whole time I felt like it actually worked. It is pretty much Driving Miss Daisy but with fully defined characters and arcs which makes it work. It is decently made and written and honestly just enjoyable but nothing Best Picture worthy for sure. 6/10. 8: 12 Years A Slave: deserved the win. The acting is amazing and the characters all feel very realistic making the film so tragic especially because it treats the subject matter with such respect and honesty as it is a story that needed to be told. But yeah the film just is sort of slow and boring and also at points a little too violent. I get why it had to be like that but it just doesn’t really work fully for me. 7/10. 7: Argo: it is a fine in film in terms of direction and acting but I feel lit really excels in the story and writing aspects. How the whole narrative is a meta-commentary on Hollywood and the whole process of making a film is really genius and it is so insane how this story is true while the film itself is highly embellished. It has a lot of intensity to it as well really bringing the last 20-30 minutes or a fever pitch that results in a satisfying ending. 7/10. 6: Birdman: I really liked this. The film is so meta with how it fits into the film industry and the life/image of the actors themselves. I also just love how it dices head first into the story of a come back but also how the past haunts you with some pretty insane filmic techniques that makes it unique and so watchable as well. 7/10. 5: Parasite: even though I didn’t really understand the film fully initially I found it incredibly entertaining and provocative. I loved the writing and its blend of suspense and comedy that was perfectly done, the performances and direction were insane and I loved the art direction as well as it allowed me to really sink into the thematic aspects of the story and its depth even if I came out of it not really fully understanding it, warranting a rewatch for sure. 8/10. 4: Moonlight: it is so well-acted and conceptually rich. The story is really well-paced never losing me at any point in the journey of Chiron as his sexuality comes to define him which is hard and something that many people that I know coul$ definitely relate to in the LGBTQIA+ community can relate to. It was also beautifully scored as well with such an attention to detail within the setting as well which really fleshes out the world and makes the film quietly moving by the end. 3: The Artist: I actually love this film. It feels very realistic to the era and the characters feel very realistic and charming. Amazing performances and artistry with the silent filmmaking being so well-done. I also love how it takes on the silent to talkie pipeline in Hollywood and how it critiques it and how it fits into the era of the time and now as well (this film actually gave me the whole idea of my major work for English Extension 2 in the same topic area). And despite it being silent it is probably one of the easiest to rewatch. 9/10. 2: Spotlight: this film is so well-acted with all of the cast perfectly embodying the tortured characters as they come to discover a dark and destructive secret of manipulation from high institutions which is delivered with such haunting realism in the writing and set design. It really disturbed me at first and actually caused me to have second thoughts on my own religion because of its horror and power. 9/10. 1: The Shape of Water: it is just such a beautiful love story of acceptance of shared ostracisation and pain. The setting and characters are so well-designed really throwing me into the wonderful world of Guillermo Del Toro who puts his stamp on the film. The plot has a lot of dynamism and tension and tragedy within its beauty, perfectly shown by the simple but beautiful performance of Sally Hawkins (one of my fave actresses) who shows her worth here. Michael Shannon was also perfectly cast as the villain who is just hellbent on destroying this beautiful connection and relationship really delving into some dark and human places so disturbingly and perfectly. It is beautifully written and shot as well really bringing this perfect fairytale of the beauty of human connection in times of oppression perfectly. 10/10.

Now for my ranking comment: Interestingly the three movies you only saw more than once are also the ones I also saw more than once and are in both our cases rightfully our top 3 (but maybe in slight different order 😉). I somehow try to make it a more objective ranking due to craftmanship and inventiveness of filmmaking and storytelling and not (too much, just if it's tight between two) of personal taste and history with the films. I take the more auteur approach in wanting Oscar to reward art and not just the movie the Academy enjoyed most on an entertainment level during award season (although entertainment is never forbidden and can push a film higher if it's a narrow and tight decision 😉) And I don't put the wins in the context of the nomination line-up. I just want to rank them as a group of 10 films, from which I just have to decide whar's worst and what's best. So here we go: 10.) The only one I haven't seen because it never crossed my mind from the premise of this film: A queer and reversed ,Driving Miss Daisy?? It never occured to me that I ever would enjoy that and as everybody is giving it so much hate I'm confirmed. I also have the theory that this, my no 9 and ,Moonlight' only won due to the preferential balott system,that needs to be talked about more in screwing things up in Best Picture: ,Green Book' (2018). 9.) This is the worst movie for me on an artistic (and personal) level to win Best Picture this decade: ,Spotlight' (2015) is just such an unimaginative and formally conservative dull movie with subject matter I really didn't know that US-Americans care so much (as catholicism is a minority religion unlike in Europe or South America). This is just a talkative 90's TV movie of the week with a cast of middle-age white straight men as talking heads fighting for staying relevant (on a character's and an actor's level). As you said about other things, Brian: Nu, nu, nu 😉 8.) Argo (2012): From a European standpoint it's a one-sided US-American propaganda piece that tells the world how USA and in this case Hollywood saves the day. The more interesting thing it depicts in a kind of subplot is the shift from New Hollywood of the 70's to blockbuster cinema of the 80's. Formally it's a middle of the road crafted and directed movie and who would have really needed a Ben Affleck director Oscar win? He was rightfully snubbed as the whole film should never be nominated as Best Picture, but I guess that secured ,Argo's win as the actor's branch went out voting for one of them mistreated by the directors. Call it revenge of the actor's against their tormentors in a pre-Me-too-era 😉 7.) The King's Speech (2010): Talking about propaganda. What made Obama-USA crazy for a stottering king who needs to put his act together to deliver a speech at the beginning of WWII that outside of UK nobody remembers 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️? It's an inoffensive middle-of-the-road well-crafted British theater adaptation with some interesting queer and froggish camera angles, nice art direction and good acting. But 14 years later no one cares about this anymore and hey, you Academy encouraged Tom Hooper's director's career that brought the world the movie adaptations they've never asked for ,Les Mis' and ,Cats'. Well done, Academy 😉😜 6.) The Shape of Water (2017): From now on every movie is good and worth a rewatch 😉 I mean, I'm not obsessed with Guillermo Del Toros' movies and visual style, he's like a more horror-leaning Latin American Tim Burton to me, and he has done better things than this but it's enjoyable and entertaining. Maybe too many characters thrown in. I can remember that I mixed up the neighbour and spy because despite of age their appearences were too similiar. And I didn't enjoy Michael Shannon's performance and character arc of the villain. But Sally Hawkins delivers a gorgeous performance as the mousy mute girl falling in love with the creature from the Amazon. I really enjoyed the love story at its center and genre-mix and visual-style-wise it was an almost bold decision of the Academy to pick this as the consensus winner. 5.) The Artist (2011): I don't know what it is with you Americans having a problem with that winning Best Picture back then (Harvey Weinstein?)? On many US ranking lists this appears low and is trashed out the window. I mean, I regard this as a one-hit-wonder-film but an ambitious, well-made and charming one. What not to like about a movie that succeeds in looking and feeling like a late 20's silent film, telling a variation of ,Singin' in the Rain', being balanced in comedy and tragedy and having Jean Dujardin's performance at its heart where he delivers a charismatic cross between Douglas Fairbanks Senior, John Gilbert and Wallace Reid. And don't forget about the dog as the ultimate unfair advantage 😉 My personal pic and a missing nominee for 2011 is Lars von Trier's ,Melancholia'. My favourite movie of the decade. But von Trier screwed up at the Cannes press conference and harmed his masterpiece. I don't want to go into how much I despise the self-indulgent, pretentious, banal and overhyped ,The Tree of Life' 🙈 4.) 12 Years a Slave (2013): You are right, Brian, that this is one of the movies you rather appreciate than love. But there's so much to appreciate here that the Oscar was correctly and rightfully awarded to this one (and no, Brian, I don't share your love for ,Gravity' or Sandra Bullock in anything she's in 😉🤷🏻‍♂️) Beautifully shot, there is really some Kubrick Barry Lyndon'esque frames going on here. Very good production design and a lot of good yet devastating performances. I underrated the sexual exploitation effect of slavery, so this film helped me to get a feeling for that. Not an easy watch but human kind is often atrocious in its treatment of each other, so let's see what the upcoming Trump administration has on offer to the world in that regard 🙈😢😱 3.) Moonlight (2016): I wasn't a big fan of it when I first saw it because I thought the real movie was for me what happened between the 2nd and 3rd act with the main character. I wanted to see how he became this ultra macho muscular drug king pin dealer he-man and not just being presented with this outcome. But as I still wanna see that movie I didn't get and how much there is to appreciate, especially for sensitive persons of any gender, race or whatever who are bullied for what they are from people that are just below their frequencies, ,Moonlight' grew on me. Although I have the probably controversial theory that the preferential balott helped it win because ,La La Land' was short of 50 percent plus 1 vote from winning and didn't have enough 2nd places. What's your take on that? Also the strange ,Spotlight' win outcome should be considered under this premise. 2.) Parasite (2019): It's a very well-crafted, excellently written and especially acted film (where were the Oscar nominations for some of the cast members 🤔😢) but I don't consider it as the ultimate master piece that everyone (in US) wants to see in it. It's a very American-paced and told story, subject-matter wise also very American as in a globalized neoliberal world the most important thing to achieve seems to be wealth on cost of others. But whether narratively nor formally anything challenging at all. It was the best American movie from a foreign country this year and that's why it has won in my opinion 😉 1.) Birdman (2014): This is the formally most challenging and artistic-wise most daring picture of the bunch. Also an interesting commentary on the obsession with super heroes in the US-American culture. The biggest and most painful snub was Michael Keaton not winning the Oscar for best Actor as he, besides all the directorial and technical excellency of the movie (camera, editing, soundtrack, sound design, art direction etc), delivers a tour-de-force Performance in a just gorgeous ensemble cast. And sorry no, as nice as ,Boyhood' is as an experiment, it feels much more like if someone edited 12 seasons of a TV Show into a movie, where you can see the actors age from season to season. ,Birdman' was back then the candidate I was rooting for and this win holds up perfectly well to this day. Although justice for Michael Keaton NOW 🏆😍💪🏽🫶🏼

Didn’t watch a lot of movies in 2018 for the 2019 Oscars. Nothing really appealed to me that year. Only saw Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born. No to The Kings Speech. Should’ve been The Social Network, Inception or The Fighter from the nominated movies. Or how about The Town, which was my favorite movie that year, or Blue Valentine? Far superior that The Kings Speech. I would’ve preferred Midnight in Paris over The Artist and every other movie that year. That was an original and fantastic movie. Argo never should’ve won over Zero Dark Thirty. That movie was amazing. Even Lincoln was more deserving. I have no problem with 12 Years a Slave. Saw it in the theater and cried. Rough movie. Actually saw all the nominees that year. Also wouldn’t have had a problem with Wolf of Wall Street, Her or Captain Phillips. I’m going to disappoint Brian, but I did not like Gravity. I also saw all the movies from this year (Except Room). Don’t have a problem with Spotlight. It was a very good movie. But The Big Short was I a league of its own that year. That should’ve run away with the Oscar. The Shape of Water. Never saw it. Just seemed too weird.i only saw a few of the nominees that year, but one of them was Three Billboards, and that would be the one I would’ve picked. I tried watching Birdman and hated it. I just could not get into it. For me, and I know some will hate this, American Sniper was easily the best film of the year. Saw it in the theater and it had my attention every second. Bradley Cooper became Chris Kyle. Heartbreaking movie. Runner up for me was Whiplash. Great movie. Phenomenal acting. I’ll never forgive Moonlight for winning. La La Land is easily my favorite movie of that decade and probably my second favorite in the last 20 years (of the Oscar nominees). I’ve rewatch La La Land so many times. I love the story, love the songs, love the actors and hate the ending, but love it at the same time because it’s not what was supposed to happen, but it gives us that final scene in the piano bar which is so hopeful and yet so heartbreaking. And I love it from start to finish. I really like Parasite. Plus they mention my Alma Mater, Illinois State, in that movie. I’m fine with that winner. I really thought Joker was going to win. I also loved Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

The german film 'The Lives of Others' was way better than Pan's Labyrinth, that's why it won in the foreign language film category over Pan's L. It was even much much better than the actual best picture: The Departed. When I saw Parasite for the very first time in July 2019 (months before the Oscars) I predicted right then and there it would win best international film and the best film as well, and it really did! It was a bold prediction, coz usually international films don't make it to the best film list and I had not seen the other films yet. But Parasite was hard to ignore.
