I've tried this on my old-ish Sony RX100 v7 and I am impressed. The camera doesn't have cine 4 profile but it works with the cine 2 profile that is built in. Very easy to use and only required me adjusting curves in Resolve to get really nice footage both indoors and outdoors. Not the widest dynamic range, but if you use the zebra function clipping can be avoided. Using ISO 400 I was impressed with low light detail and relative lack of grain. Skin tones are gorgeous ❤ Great job thank you 😊

Great video man!, As a visually impaired person who likes to make videos, color, grading, and stuff is extremely difficult for me, it makes more sense to just get. Hello! Thank you so much... Just to see if I'm understanding the question, are you asking what is a better camera the A7C or ZV1 to pair in combination with your zve10? If that's the question, then the A7C is a far superior camera but it is more expensive and you have to buy full frame lenses! If you are asking, can you use this custom picture profile with the zve10? Then... Yes, yes you can and it should look pretty similar if not the same! Let me know if that helped

Hi, great video! Was this shot on the a7III, not the a7SIII? I'm quite confused between the a7C and the a7C II. I'm really tempted to get the a7C II mainly for its S-Cinetone, but it's $800 more expensive here. Photography-wise, I know there isn't much difference since I can shoot in RAW and post-process in Lightroom. I prefer point-and-shoot simplicity and don't want to do extensive color grading for videos to achieve natural-looking shots that are usable. Are there no other ways to achieve this with older Sony cameras? Is S-Cinetone really worth the extra $800? Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

Hello, and great question... I shot most of the b-roll on the A7C and ZV1 (of course using my custom C/Z-Cinetone picture profiles)... And the talking head parts on the FX3. I now own the A7Cii because of the better video specs, better stability, greater resolution, and improved handling. It's really better in every way from the original A7C. However, is it $800 better!? I don't know, maybe... Is it $600 better? I'd say probably. Is it $450 better? Yes, definitely. So, having the S-Cinetone and 10bit color is a massive step up in video, and the rest is a bonus...but it's hard to say for sure if it's worth the extra cash for you. Hope that helps in any way!?

I've been able to match my A7C and FX3 with this C-cinetone custom profile, and then some slight grading depending on how well I did with matching exposure. However, you can also use Hlog3, and that matches pretty seamlessly with the same grade.

Thank you so much; I really appreciate it... And not a "rookie" question at all, or it's all relative, I'm just beginning to learn how to color grade and an still far from feeling like I have a grasp on it. I will say, even with these profiles, I may adjust colors in post (especially because the screen monitor is not very bright so I miss exposure a lot). Yet, I don't tend to use a set LUT when I do. However, it is a good idea... So if I wanted a certain creative look per each project, I may make a color grade preset and save it as a lut to use across footage. You should record all iso from 100 to 8000 in S-Cinetone mode (PP11) and from 16000 to 32000 in S-Log3, because "dual native iso" works bad on 12800. It randomly switches on and off on ZV-E1 (iso 12800). Don't use S-Log3 from ISO 640 to ISO 12800. It's terrible

Good question, and I know how tedious it can be... so if you change the picture profile for video, your photos in JPEG will also have those colors. However, I suggest making sure you shoot in JPEG+ RAW (it's in your settings), so you get your photos with no color on them, so you will get two photos per snap. But I like using this custom profile for pics too!

Hi Brian, So I am in a bit of a dilemma, I was saving up for an FX3, but then I started to realize that maybe I should use that money for a new PC. What set the foundation for this thinking was that I not long ago got an A7IV, but I wanted an FX3 as I wanted more of a cinema camera. I should lay everything out in this post so it's easier for you to answer my question, having all the details accessible if you choose to do so. I'll start off by saying that obviously by having the A7IV and not having any clients currently and probably not having clients for a good while, that I don't need an FX3. However, I do want one. Some reasons for this include the aspect that I get off work pretty late and by the time I am shooting, it's typically pretty dark out so the lower MP count and the higher native ISO will allow me to shoot in these dark conditions with more confidence (as i dont live in or near a bright place when its nighttime). Obviously, the A7IV is a beast of a camera in low light, but I think it's pretty well known that the FX3 is better. Some other things include the potential to shoot in 4k 120, good rolling shutter performance, and having a very low chance of overheating even though I've never had that problem with the A7IV (though I only have my A7IV on for like a minute at a time, and I should mention that I have yet to use 4k60 and don't pan my camera super fast, but regardless, having the ability to do so with very little consequences is a nice feeling). It's also netflix approved, which is nice to know. Generally, I would like a video camera to accompany my hybrid/photo shooter in the A7IV. I guess I would still consider myself a hobbyist, but I want to hit the ground running with creating a portfolio of my work and shopping it around very soon. Moving on to the PC. My current PC isn't bad (GTX 1080 I7 6700K, 32 GB DDR4 RAM). However, I do feel it's getting a bit dated and could use for an upgrade in terms of my editing suite and things like that. So, that is my decision. Do I spend about $4,000 on the FX3 with the 50mm f 1.8, or do I save $500 and get a new PC? I think most people would advise me to: 1. Use the money for other gear instead like better audio, lighting, etc. Or 2. Buy one now and just save for the other later The main problem with this is that i only have until the end of February to decide as my family is forcing me to start saving up to pay back my student loans. Therefore, which ever one I don't buy now, I won't be able to buy for maybe up to five years and I fear that the FX3 is gonna be basically unusable and that they might not produce another small form factor cinema camera by then if i choose the PC. If I choose the FX3, I fear that my current PC might die before the next five years, and I won't have enough money to replace it. So this brings me here as I have gotten really great advice from you in the past. I should note that the only gear I have is a tripod, A7IV, Tamron 24mm f 2.8, 3 tube lights, a square small rig camera light, a mid XLR mic, and a shotgun on camera mic. I have also been shooting films since 2017 and have started photography in the last year. So the only thing that keeps me in the amateur category is that I don't have any clients yet as I haven't attempted to put myself out there and look for them, but I plan on doing that soon. I should also note that my computer has a few overheating issues that, after further inspection seems to be a result of old age, making me wonder whether a new PC is the way to go or not. However, this only happens when gaming. However, I haven't put it through the ringer with any intense editing, so that might make it overheat as well. So, do I get the FX3 with the 50mm f 1.8 (that's all I can afford, unfortunately)? Do I get the PC instead and just keep getting better with my A7IV despite some of the shortcomings I mentioned and hope that the FX3 is still viable in a few years or hope that there is a small form factor netflix approved sony cinema camera available? Or should I do something entirely different that you didn't see mentioned? I am sorry for this long post and appreciate it if you read this far. I would appreciate it even more if you could provide some feedback, insights, or guidance. Thanks so much!
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
Thank you for detailing this all out... It's a great question that likely doesn't have a clear satisfactory answer. I have owned both the a74 and currently have the fx3 (along with the a7c) but I got rid of the a74, and honestly I'm not sure I should have. (I never really use 4k 120 or whip pan) The fx3 is a future proof camera and probably will be for a long time, so much so I can imagine in ten years, people getting back into it's for nostalgia as it's a better camera than we really need. I also think in a few years there will be a fx3ii that will be even better. So, if I were you, I'd seriously consider keeping the a74 and getting a better computer and really working on figuring out your business model to get clients and start earning... And then consider the fx3 or whatever else is out around then. I currently edit on a m1 MacBook air which I've seen for $799. Now, I had been a PC guy for awhile, so I get if you don't want to switch, but I am more just saying because I have no idea how much PCs are anymore. I do feel the a74 is an equally good camera for low light and it's a way better hybrid camera, so if you're looking to get paid for photography, it is the better option. If you're looking to make money with videography, the fx3 is better... But... If you can't edit either of them on your computer, then you won't be able to earn an income at all. It's a tough choice and I'm not sure if I helped at all as I was rambling a bit (jet lagged).

I need help. I'm trying to start an indie TV show and I own A7C and ZV-1. Coffeezilla sold me on the idea of getting an FX3 for my green screen, but I need dedicated studio camera and am looking at FX30 with Sony 10-20mm and 18-108mm OSS f/4 G Lens. Upgrading my HDMI capture card is shocking hard, I have 9 cameras with two quad Elgato Camlink Pro PCIe HDMI capture cards. Getting any card that captures HDR10 is hard, there are no HDR16 capture cards, Black Magic has a quad PCIe x8 capture card. That will cost $300 up grade Camlink Pro to DeckLink. With green screen, I can use S-Log3 to get more dynamic range. I'm okay with pushing 8-bit cameras to their limits. I'm not shooting for Netflix, I'm trying to not be broke and get a result I"m happy with. Is there any way I can get you to do a green screen test between FX3 and A7C S-Log3 exposed to the left (i.e. for the shadows)? With green screen, that actually gives the ability to do lumakey foreground green screen using blown out light. Makes me wonder if I might be better off with another A7C rather than FX30; but I'm still getting FX3 for the 35mm Surui Saturn 1.6x anamorphic lens. Thanks.

Hello! Yeah... That all sounds like a super complicated riddle, so I get your frustration! Yet, I currently don't own the A7C anymore, but I personally would not shoot slog3 with an 8 bit camera. I also hardly ever shoot on a green screen, so I'm not sure I know enough to help you as I don't have a proper set up for that anymore. Also, I guess I'm not surprised coffeezilla uses an FX3. I haven't watched one of his videos in a while though, but... I think the FX30 is a fantastic value studio camera and super sharp (so probably good for keying). Is overheating a concern for you? If so, then yes go with fx3, a7s3, or fx30. If not I'd look at a74 or A7Cii... Or the A73 & A7C in Hlog3. Again, sounds ambitious... I wish you luck!

@@BrianCatalano The thing about green screen is there is no sky and you're not capturing a lot of dynamic range, and you can expose to the left/for the shadows with S-Log3 and you don't get those banding issues. You just have to make a custom LUT with Resolve that works with OBS, which is not hard. You can see how it works when you look at an OBS LUT PNG image. You will notice an 8x8 grid of repeated LUT patterns. This can be changed to log grid, so when you expose for the shadows, it essentially uses more like a 6x8 grid rather than 8x8, adding extra dynamic range that is more like 9-bit colors. You wouldn't want to color grade outdoor footage with S-Log3 8-bit, but with green screen you're just cutting people out, so the dynamic range is much less. You are also pulling the video image data off of the HDMI port in 4K NV12 mode, which has less dynamic range than YUY2 1080p. I have the A7C. I will make a video about this.

What if I could fire a laser pointer at someone on a green screen, and this can trigger the computer to display a gunshot? Or an LED inside of a magic wand tip can trigger 3D magic effects. I could use a neural network that is trained to respond to blown out highlights.

I'm sorry to hear that... I do know that the a6400's color science is very different. Yet, if I were you I'd play with the color phase and color depth and tinker with it yourself. I had to do this on the A7C2 (which also has very different colors), but I wanted to make my own look and after a lot of trial and write it worked. What colors are you getting when you do it ... Too green or magenta?

I am soooo frustrated with my zv1. All sorts of tweaks either in pre or post production seem to not lead to any bearable results. There is always something waaaay off. Will try this too but am a bit disheartened. Seeing you having gone through so much to get this is somewhat motivating because maybe I am not just a dullard. Still, I just wish to get over this seemingly simple bump of getting acceptable visuals to finally concentrate more on the content creation side of things...

You definitely don't sound like a dullard (unless we both are)! I am constantly having issues with color management. I know just make sure my sequence settings are in rec 709 and then I modify and interpret the footage to rec 709 if I shoot in Hlog3.... Or I use this custom profile... Or just Intelligent Auto setting and forget it. What editing software do you use? I often find that to be the issue than the camera settings if you're trying to get the most out of the camera. Try this custom picture profile first, but I totally empathize with your frustrations!

@@BrianCatalano Thank you so much for this encouraging response! I have spent thr last 2 weeks trying to wrap my head around DaVinci Resolve. The last two things I shot in slog3 with gamut3, because I saw a thing about using an acescct-effect on that for getting decent transformation to rec709. My other attempt at direct CST or using the project settings for colormanagement have been just abysimal. The best thing I shot do far has been the just uploaded "About this Channel", if you want to check it out. That was done with aces and even though I do not hate the overall look, the banding is just horrendous. I even have a colorcard and the waveform is just everywhere on the grey-scales, which is very visible in that uploaded video (my skin oscillates in RGB ffs). The colormatch was just leading to terribly red footage, so I dumped that for now. This scattered waveform made me reconsider the picture profile because maybe the zv1 just cant get accurate data in slog3/gamut3. But maybe it also has to do with messed up exposure/whitebalance? My office where I record has a huge window, which forces me to do autowhitebalance, since in custom color temperature within minutes my footage slowly transitions from warm to cold temperatures depending on cloud movements. Aaargh, where do I even start? This afternoon I will try out your Z-Cinetone and see what the waveform/parades and exported video ends up with at both no color correction as well as some slight touching up. After that I might just go through all the PPs. But I am still unsure about this whitebalance maybe just throwing me off. I will also have to check again with zebras if the 18%grey shows me somewhat accurate exposure. Still, now that you know more of my situstion, any pointers from your side?

@@BrianCatalano omg... First impression of your "Zinetone"(tm) is absolutely amazing. Definitely gonna shoot the next vid in that to also see it on other displays. A first glance at the waveform of the greyscale shows much more alignment which was even possible to basically perfect with the slightest touch on the primaries. But even before that it looks so saturated, conrasted, deep and frankly pretty professional. Wow! I am blown away by it. Thank you so much for this already. I will still try and learn much more about all of this but even if I keep running into dead ends, I at least have something to fall back onto. A solid base for absolutely decent footage so that the journey can finally start for good.

@@FelixChamber I would say, you seem to be set up with the right prerequisite knowledge for color grading and you are using the best program, so I think you will get it to liking rather soon. However, the only thing I would say, if I were you, do not use Slog3. In my opinion slog3 should not be used with 8 bit cameras unless you've mastered some level of technical prowess far exceeding my own. I also would not recommend slog2. I typically use Hlog3, but even that because finding a good rec709 conversion and not clipping the highlights can be hard since you cant monitor it with a conversation lut (unless you have an external monitor that you can load luts in). I'd say turn the picture profile off or use my custom profile with cine2 or cine4. Even with my Sony Fx3, I only use Slog3 if I need to. I typically use it's S-Cinetone because the color management from in camera to exported to uploading on KZbin is seamless. Hlog3 can work but will take some practice exposing it and converting it. You could also try these Luts to see as well if they work for you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6uZlHygi6Z6qaM

It's likely a matter of precisely the opposite. I'm very particular about color shifts across multiple Sony camera bodies especially with variations in bit depth. I'm not sure if you watched the video, but my argument is that the color science within 8 bit Sony's, with no picture profile on, skews magenta with either a too heavy contrast or the blacks lowered more than I prefer when compared to such picture profiles as S-Cinetone in the newer 10 bit Sonys... So this video is how I customize my picture profile to replicate something closer to s-cinetone for older Sonys. I'm not taking a controversial perspective, as I demonstrate the color shift and how one could fix it. I'm happy that you've found a good workflow... What picture profile do you use?
