I think color correction is always necessary. Color grading however is something you do exclusively for yourself and your tech-nerd friends. The client almost never appreciates the difference between standard or graded footage. So I have given up on grading and spend that time on script development instead.

Maaan.. about 947 previous KZbin videos have lost me to this subject before this one. They all expertly explain what picture profiles ARE and what they look like (which is.... I mean.. why? I can see what they look like.. thx tho..) but none of them bothered to explain the WHY and certainly not the REASONS to use them. Great video! Simple, but it explained more in a few mins, than the previous ones in hours and hours of digging. Subscribed. Thanks, Attila

I settled with HLG2 BT2020 gamma Details -7 and Stauration -7. Image does not need much of tweaking/grading at all. Saturation = 0 is also good. Camera A7C. If I need to do any color grading, I export result from Davinci Resolve in Main10 4:2:0 HVEC MP4 file and it looks great!

I've been shooting a bunch of corporate indoor shoots on a flat background in LOG just to practice color grading, and because I got the idea that shooting in the standard profile was just unacceptable for a professional to do, like shooting stills with the camera on Auto. Justin, this is such a helpful video. I've been struggling recently because I shoot in Cine 2 and then color grade it. I add the Premiere Pro fix for Mac at the end (it helps in fixing the desaturated colors and tints that Premiere causes when you render using a Mac). But for my last video, the end result that was uploaded to KZbin looked way too punchier than I wanted it to be. I have no idea why it's doing that. Have you had any issues with Premiere pro exports and how did you fix them? I was thinking if I should start shooting in HLG3 or SLOG 2 rather than my Cine2 profile.

Hey, question: I do not use pp myself, but feel that it mainly helps to get consistency across pictures in terms of editing, do that you do not have to adjust your pictures from 0. I watched this video, but do not see the advantage yet as long as you edit your pictures later on via laptop/adobe. I do not mind to spend time to adjust my raw files. How do you look at this? Thanks!
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
Picture profiles don't apply to photos. They're really only for video. If you're shooting raw photos, picture profiles actually don't work. Even if you shoot with them enabled, the minute you import them into lightroom, the picture profile goes away and what you see if the raw photo. I guess the fact that this was just for video and not for photos was something I could have brought up. I took for granted that people would know that 🤦‍♂️

You got it! Take your curves, grab the very top point and drag it to the left across the top, then take the very bottom point and drag it right along the bottom. Then add a little s-curve between the two for contrast. Then crank up the saturation a bit and you should be at a decent starting place.

@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! The reason you would do layers is because each layer feeds into the next one. So if I change the color red to orange in the first layer, if I want to change it in the second layer, I’ll have to adjust orange now, not red. Hopefully that helps a little but I’ll definitely consider making a video.

@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
SLOG2 is still useable for sure, I find you just have to really NAIL the exposure right on in camera. If you don’t get that, that’s when it starts to fall apart for me. The reason my standard profile looks nice on the shot with the plants is because there isn’t a lot of dynamic range in that shot. It’s not clipping the whites or the blacks. All the information in the scene fits inside the range that the picture allows.

This was awesome. Super helpful. I donhave a question. Do you use the profiles for both picture and video?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t use them for photos because I shoot raw. If you shoot a picture profile in raw, it will disappear when you import that raw file into your editor anyway. You might see it on the camera because it’s a jpg preview. But you don’t really need it because the raw file has so much more space to keep all that information anyway. If you’re shooting jpg, you could argue that picture profiles might be helpful in a similar way as they are for video.

So which is the best option in all kinds of situations? HLG???
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
As I said in the video, each option has some different strengths and are useful in different situations. I would say HLG is probably the most versatile though.

Hi there... Nice ... So my Sony camera has eleven profiles: PP1 thorough PP11. Can you go Profile by Profile to explain ( with visual examples ) what each profile does ? Thank you !!

Hi! Those p.p. you mentioned are with the default contrast, saturations, colors settings or did you change them also?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 3 жыл бұрын
No adjustments! I did mess with s-log2 sometimes and pump up the saturation. But I’m pretty sure In this video I kept it all standard

Great video (as usual). I’ve just been planning to get more familiar with this topic. Also! Have you gotten your hands on the Sony 16-55 f2.8? Curious about your thoughts on it!

Thank you!! I haven’t gotten it yet (except at camera camp for a day). It’s a fantastic lens but I’ve been shooting less and less with my apsc cameras lately so it doesn’t make sense for me to pick one up. In fact I just sold my a6400 and 18-105 to lighten my apsc kit a bit. Got that a7siii coming soon!

If i use 'standard', could I/ Should I still make alterations in Adobe afterwords, such as editing blue and teal aspects etc? Which profile would you suggest for darker settings? Example, I will be shooting in a dark auditorium for our church services, which profile should I use to get the best footage possible with little to no light sources?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 3 жыл бұрын
You can still color grade any video for sure. For low light settings I don’t really change my workflow much, I know some people say that flatter profiles are noisier in low light situations but once I’ve corrected them, it comes out about the same (Gerald undone talks about this in a few of his videos too). Personally, I like to shoot in Log profiles but if you aren’t used to grading that. You can try the cine profiles and it’s a bit less of a departure from standard.

@@dunnadidit I have a sony a6100 which does not have a flat picture profile as the a6000. Is there a profile for my camera that would be better than using standard?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 3 жыл бұрын
You can play with the creative styles and move your saturation, contrast, and sharpness down to simulate a flatter picture profile if you want!
