Hey Gary. I got a little story for you. When I used to work for a auto body supply company, I went to Taiwan to tour some of the factories. There was a factory producing front end suspension parts. The same parts are coming off the assembly line. Some were going into white boxes and some were going into Moog boxes. Same parts. 😳

Thanks James your right it's about lining the pockets of big corporations and unfortunately the loss of many jobs in the US , there was a day I went out of my way to buy only AC Delco products because they were a quality product but now it a crap shoot each time I put a part on a customer car or my own thanks for watching 👍

Another great practical advice video from you again. Another option for some parts is get your original part rebuilt by small independant ( local is possible sometimes ) shops. I had the starter and alternator rebuilt local to me here in Saskatoon and sent a water pump cause it had the original GM Part number stamped into and I wanted it to go on the engine getting built for my C10 to Ontario for a rebuild. Also we are fortunate in Saskatoon and have 2 Radiator Shops that can rebuild an original radiator or heater core for you and I had my original rad and heater core rebuilt for my build. These things I mentioned are not usually the cheapset way to get things done but your usually geting a better quality job than mass produced parts from China.

I put a water pump on my engine a few years back and knew it was made in China. went to put the fan and pulley assembly on it and the back of the pulley hit the water pump housing causing it to not turn. I had to then drive another hour to the parts store for pulley spacers!!!! You they were in stock what does that tell ya!!! A lot of people read the box and see "Assembled in the USA" this only means the off shore parts were imported into the States and put together they're not made there. This is a nice marketing trick. Yes unfortunately we are going to be stuck with these "B" rate or worse parts for the rest of our hobby days. Excellent info Gary thanks for sharing.

Rock Auto is a drop shipper and deals with parts from the same suppliers who supply auto parts stores. Amazon and eBay have some sellers who are intentionally selling counterfeit parts.

I agree 💯 this has been an issue for many years now regarding ebay and Amazon, I personally haven't used rock auto but know lots that do without issue, main thing is as long as they look after you if something goes south

Last year I put on a brand new Holley electric fuel pump on my 70 duster and it made about 80 miles before it decided to puke out on the way to Raddison car show. I got a pull to get the car show and tow truck to bring it home. I pulled off the Holley brought it back to the speed shop i deal with. I had no problems dealing with the guy and bought a Edelbrock fuel pump paid the difference, so far so good.

I've been hearing many stories like this in regards to holley fuel pumps both electrical and mechanical, my understanding is all there fuel pump manufacturing takes place in Mexico now while the carburetors are still assembled here, I can't confirm if any of this is true however it would certainly explain the frequent reliability issues

I have been through a few issues over the years buying parts. A decade ago you knew what stores to get parts and what stores to not get parts. Napa was the gold standard for getting parts. You would avoid stores like autozone and advanced. Now they're all the same and it makes it extremely hard to get parts for. Even if I get a refund or another part. I still have to drive back to the parts store or do the job over again. I put moog parts on my truck because they had greasable fittings and I remember them being the good second to the dealer. Now they're the same garbage the parts store sells. I don't know where the future will lead anymore. I don't want to get involved with the EV stuff for multiple reasons and I can't afford to buy a new vehicle. Parts is the final gate and if that fails, then I guess I need to start fixing the parts myself or manufacturing them.

Original owner of an '87 442. Just bought an AC Delco water pump made in China and a new radiator made in Mexico. New timing cover made in China, but the new crank seal & timing chain are American. Things have gotten tough out there...

It certainly is frustrating, but while we might think nostalgically about parts made in Canada and the USA, the simple truth is that most people wouldn't be willing to pay what those parts would cost to make now. We all demand quality, but we are also addicted to cheap Chinese shit in every aspect of our lives. We would love to see a reborn parts manufacturing industry in North America, but none of us would be willing to work for half of minimum wage to make it happen. Rebuilding old oem parts is always the best option whenever possible these days, and hoarding new old stock parts whenever one comes across them! Thanks for the video Gary...

The problem is that "made in the US" has become a selling point. We even have American tool companies that switched to foreign made and they never lowered the prices. We can make the same products here for the same prices as them. The problem is that the manufacturers would have to pay the workers more and they have two options here. 1: make the product cost more. 2: take a lose on the net earnings for funds to the company. We have seen manufacturers buying out other manufacturers and that seems like where they want to go now. It's sad now. It's already a bear of a job to change the parts of modern vehicles and you don't really have full verification that the parts going in will work like they're supposed to. Even if the store has a decent return policy. You still have to waste hours taking the part back out and doing the job over again. The next part might be just as bad as the return also.

It’s funny how the boys upstairs have convinced us that our only options are to buy sweatshop parts from over there or to have sweatshop factory jobs here. There was a time when a USA factory job could buy USA factory parts and still pay the mortgage and put food on the table just fine. The difference isn’t simply cheap foreign competition…in fact it’s not competition at all if they’re stamping a U.S. brand name on it and it’s making U.S. owners richer. The reason we “don’t want to pay” higher prices is because we no longer have decent wages. Meanwhile the bosses are living better than ever…here and over there. 🤔

The real problem is you know you buy two tie rods and one of them slightly different or one of them has a little play in it out the box. Meanwhile I'm removing a 22-year-old GM tie rod with barely any play but the boot ripped and it's getting destroyed. But I you know yes it has play but not as bad as a brand new part that I bought and it wasn't a cheap part either. I don't want to name names but it's a Canadian company with blue boots

O buddy do you ever that right. I started working on vehicles in the 70's. We have always had problems but today it's much more difficult. We have to deal with China and they have no loyalty to us in fact many times I feel they cheat us. I think we need to become the squeaky wheel and complain to the part supplier. Recently I got something from Amazon that was a "Prime" item with "Free returns". I returned it and Amazon charged me $10. It's ok to charge for returns as long as you make that clear at the point of sale. Amazon is like most big companies, you can't call, e mail or text them. Finally I got a phone # and complained to someone in India. Amazon has really gone down hill, you have to be careful when ordering through them. We need to find ways to become effective as the squeaky wheel, because in the end we have what they want our money.

Rock auto does offer cheap cheap versions of the part your looking up. But they are not in the business of selling counterfeit versions of the highest quality OEM components like many sellers on Amazon.

@@garythegear Rock Auto does indeed sell junk. The cheapest line they have is well CHEAP. I do not have proof their OEM name brands are genuine. I would think if they were counterfeit the content creators on YT would have exposed this. I priced a multifunction switch for my Buick LeSabre in 2022 at my local Chevy dealer. His employee cost for an AC Delco unit was $120 more than Rock Autos unit. He told me to save money by purchasing the exact same unit from RA. It's was still $230 from RA but w as great part and worked. I like RA but I shop around and sometimes the local stores are the best deal for an aftermarket part. Sometimes NAPA has really come thru.

@@garythegear In the past two years I have received two damaged AC compressors and a bent radiator from RA. I did have to send them pics of the damage. All appeared to be from rough handling by somebody. As soon as the return label was scanned they sent out replacements at least with the AC compressors. The radiator for my kids little Saturn? They refunded my $$ and let me keep the bent radiator. I tested the radiator for leaks. I didn't leak. I installed it and it's fine. You must inspect the parts upon arrival because I think you have 3 weeks to get a refund or exchange. Don't assume all is good and store away your uninspected parts for a repair to be tackled later.

Sorry Gary, AC Delco is garbage now too. Used to sell a ton of Delco reman yrs ago and in a period of 5 yrs the quality went from good to bad. Only Delco we sell now are plugs and filters and the filters make me cringe...
